Clemson takes no prisoners fighting squirrels

Clemson University is fighting back against an invasion of squirrels on its South Carolina campus. The Anderson Independent-Mail reports workers spent much of December trapping Eastern gray squirrels, catching and euthanizing the 200 rodents allowed under federal law. The squirrels have caused problems in recent years, killing about 100 mature trees by chewing on the bark for food and making their territory. About 10 percent of the campus' trees have been damaged in some way, likely costing the school about $1 million in the past decade. Clemson officials tried a squirrel birth control program, but it didn't do enough to...

Southern small town becomes wild west

Walterboro is a small community along Interstate 95. It sits about one hour north of Savannah, Georgia. It is a small town typical of the south. It belongs to a section, of the part of South Carolina, known as the Lowcountry. It is 45 minutes from the ocean and has its own watery areas, swamps. When you think of small town America, Walterboro is a place you may think of. But the last week, Walterboro has become like LA.

Senator Lindsey Graham Censored by GOP

Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican with a maverick streak, has been censured by local Republican Party officials in his home state of South Carolina. The executive committee of the Charleston County Republican Party voted unanimously on Monday to rebuke Mr. Graham “for many of the positions he has taken that do not represent the wishes of the people of South Carolina, such as: passing a ‘cap and trade’ energy bill, bailing out banks and granting amnesty for illegal aliens.” Lin Bennett, the chairwoman of the local party, told the Charleston Post and Courier that party leaders were “fed up.”

Seattle Cartoonist Blasts South Carolina Workers

Seattle Cartoonist Blasts South Carolina Workers It’s one of the funniest cartoons we’ve seen in a long time, even if it is nothing but sour grapes. Cartoonist David Horsey of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer – miffed that Boeing Corp. chose North Charleston, S.C. over Everett, Washington to assemble its second line of 787 Dreamliners – took pen to paper (well, not paper, really) to vent some of his frustration against the Palmetto State. “How many non-union South Carolinian workers does it take to attach a wing to a Boeing airplane?” Horsey’s cartoon asks, portraying several dim-witted rednecks attempting to attach a...

Could Easley (ex-RAT governor) investigation expand to Perdue (new RAT governor)?

Could Easley investigation expand to Perdue?Updated: May 29, 2009 06:36 PM EDT By Melissa Hankins WBTV (Charlotte) - Sources tell WBTV that the federal probe into former Governor Mike Easley's travel records and expenses may grow to include our current Governor, Beverly Perdue. The FBI is investigating trips taken by Easley during his time in office. The News and Observer in Raleigh reports, while in office, he flew on at least 25 private jets provided by several businessmen. Easley didn't pay for some flights, and the value of other trips appears to exceed campaign donation limits. It's a matter of...

Minter was in Washington earlier this week and spoke with the National Republican Congressional Committee to discuss a possible GOP campaign. He still is a long way off from making a decision, but has begun to consider a career in politics.
Lottery: Some store owners, employees win big and often

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Some of the same people who sell North Carolina Education Lottery tickets are also winning -- and winning big -- $100,000, $300,000 and almost $500,000 prizes. And some are winning significant jackpots repeatedly -- dozens of times a year. Is it just dumb luck? Or do these insiders have some kind of inside track? And what is the state doing about it? A regular lottery player first brought the pattern of retailers winning the lottery to the attention of the NewsChannel 36 I-Team. Since then the I-Team has pored over thousands of records of lottery winnings in...

So we had hoped to occupy that intersection for as long as possible, as has usually been possible in the past. We still, after all, had to smash the money piñata, read out the public death sentence for capitalism, and draw and quarter the capitalist effigy.
North Carolina: McCain 50%, Obama 47% (Rasmussen)

North Carolina is one of several traditionally Republican states where John McCain just can’t quite seem to pull away from Barack Obama. The Republican candidate has been at least slightly ahead in six of the seven monthly polls conducted in the state and was tied in the seventh. But, his advantage has always remained in single digits, often the low single digits. This month, it’s more of the same as the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds McCain ahead 50% to 47%. That’s not too much different than the results from a month ago. Eighty-one percent (81%) of Obama supporters...

Easleys took lovely trips abroad; we got the billBy Scott Sexton | Journal Columnist Published: July 3, 2008 It's a rhetorical question with an obvious answer, but one that nonetheless bears asking in light of Gov. Mike "Tax Hike" Easley's lame attempt at explaining the extravagant (and taxpayer-borne) costs of overseas junkets that he and first lady Mary Easley enjoyed. If you are not a native of South Carolinian (and possibly even if you are), you likely have never heard of Fort Sullivan and the significance of this day. It was impossible to escape their busy presence as they whispered noisily to relatives or whooped over the discovery of some new piece of information.
