  • Affordable Options other than ObamaCare

    03/06/2014 9:45:01 AM PST · by Degaston · 18 replies
I'm looking for the best links and contact numbers to find affordable alternatives to ObamaCare. Anyone got any suggestions? I'm a 42 year old never-used-tobacco male in the state of Texas. Through State Farm I found a 5k deductible plan with 80% co-insurance beyond the deductible that costs $168 per month. The ObamaCare option with a 5k deductible and 75% co-insurance costs $350 per month. Assuming that the law's implementation doesn't change (though the executive branch has rewritten a lot of the rules contrary to what Congress enacted) I could face a fine of 1% of my income this year,...

    Q. I currently have a $7,500 deductible on my health insurance policy, and I’m happy with my coverage. I’ve heard that the ACA allows for a catastrophic plan. Can I switch to that in 2014? A. The catastrophic plan is only available to people under age 30, or people over 30 who qualify for a hardship exemption
  • Analysis: Obama won't say it, but vote on Syria has high stakes for his presidency

(Reuters) - It seems that everyone in Washington is talking about it except President Barack Obama: When Congress votes on the administration's request to use military force in Syria, the future of his presidency could well be on the line. A defeat, a distinct possibility, would hobble Obama in affairs both foreign and domestic, particularly if fellow Democrats collaborate in it. It will hurt him at a critical juncture, as he confronts not only Syria, but the nuclear activities of Iran and North Korea, another round of battles with Republicans over fiscal issues, an immigration bill, and a possibly difficult...

(Reuters) - A collapse of the euro and break-up of the European Union would have catastrophic consequences for the global financial system, billionaire investor George Soros was quoted as saying. "Today, the euro is potentially endangering the political cohesion of the European Union," .. "If the common currency were to break down, it will lead to the break up of the European Union itself. And this will be catastrophic not only for Europe but also for the global financial system." The euro zone crisis is "more serious and more threatening than the crash of 2008," the Economic Times reported, quoting...
  • 35W bridge lawsuit: Engineering company predicted bridge collapse

MINNEAPOLIS -- Explosive documents about the Interstate 35W bridge suggest the engineering company the state hired to make sure the bridge was safe actually predicted it would collapse months before it fell apart. The documents are part of a lawsuit victims are bringing against California based URS Corporation. They accuse the firm of predicting a catastrophic event, but allegedly not telling anyone about it. The thought has been tough to swallow for the victims of that day in August 2007, when 13 people lost their lives and well over 100 were injured. "I remember until probably about 5:15 that day,"...

Here is video of CNN's Paul Begala and Anderson Cooper discussing the news that Democrat U.S. Senate Candidate Richard Blumenthal has repeatedly lied about having served in the military "in Vietnam." Begala said it is "indefensible" if in fact - as it appears to be - that he never served in Vietnam. BEGALA: "There is no good or ethical reason that he could have done that, Anderson. Uh, the guy ought to have a chance to respond. I saw the Times story as well. . . . You read those four words - 'I served in Vietnam.' That appears to...

Looks like there’s at least one high-profile Republican who won’t be voting for Sarah Palin should she run in 2012. Steve Schmidt, John McCain’s top political strategist in 2008, told a forum in Washington today that nominating Palin as the party’s next presidential nominee would be “catastrophic” for Republicans. “I think that she has talents, but my honest view is that she would not be a winning candidate,” Schmidt said. “In fact, were she to be the nominee, we would have a catastrophic election result.”

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) – People in a vast seismic zone in the southern and midwestern United States would face catastrophic damage if a major earthquake struck there and should ensure that builders keep that risk in mind, a government report said on Thursday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said if earthquakes strike in what geologists define as the New Madrid Seismic Zone, they would cause "the highest economic losses due to a natural disaster in the United States." FEMA predicted a large earthquake would cause "widespread and catastrophic physical damage" across Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and...

Once again, catastrophic fire has left its devastating footprint on our California landscape. It seems that this time every year, we find ourselves in the same precarious situation of watching our hillsides get drier and drier while the summer gets hotter and hotter, until a fire erupts and we scramble to contain it and minimize its effect. Once the fire's been put out and things return to normal (for the most part), we do little to prevent future fires. Then summer hits once again and we're back to square one. It's time we put an end to this cycle. --snip--...

Catastrophic Flooding from Ancient Lake May Have Triggered Cold Period CLIMATE CHANGE, WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION, JEFF DONNELLY, ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE Newswise — Imagine a lake three times the size of the present-day Lake Ontario breaking through a dam and flooding down the Hudson River Valley past New York City and into the North Atlantic. The results would be catastrophic if it happened today, but it did happen some 13,400 years ago during the retreat of glaciers over North America and may have triggered a brief cooling known as the Intra-Allerod Cold Period. ...Basic problems remain the same, however. And so do many of the proposed solutions. In Washington, Democrats continue to push statist prescriptions to America's health care ills; at the state level, legislatures experiment with them. It would be easy, thus, to assume that while Hillary Clinton lost the battle, she is winning the war.... Tomorrow, President Bush shouldn't just emphasize HSAs (which Sen. Kerry, incidentally, opposes). He can map out further reforms that will make health insurance more affordable: • Tax fairness. While employer contributions to health insurance are non-taxable, individuals must pay in after-tax dollars. Leveling the tax field...

A New Hurricane: The National Weather Service has issued a warning for yet another catastrophic hurricane following on the heels of Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. The path of this hurricane zigs and zags, and is therefore highly unpredictable. Experts predict that this one will cause the most damage to the United States that we have experienced in four years. They are naming this one Hurricane Kerry. Be advised, the only way for citizens to protect themselves is by being behind a Bush.

Ex-Kuwaiti Amb.: Kerry "catastrophic" for Mid East Associated Press Jul. 7, 2004 It would be "catastrophic" for the Middle East if Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry was elected to the White House, a former Kuwaiti ambassador to Washington said in comments published Wednesday. Sheik Saud Al Nasser Al Sabah, who was Kuwait's ambassador to the United States when Republican President George Bush formed a US-led coalition to liberate Kuwait from Saddam Hussein's Iraqi army in the 1991 Gulf War, said a Republican government would do a better job in solving the region's problems. "If the American administration changes in November,...

African Ice Core Analysis Reveals Catastrophic Droughts, Shrinking Ice Fields, Civilization Shifts COLUMBUS, Ohio – A detailed analysis of six cores retrieved from the rapidly shrinking ice fields atop Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro shows that those tropical glaciers began to form about 11,700 years ago. The cores also yielded remarkable evidence of three catastrophic droughts that plagued the tropics 8,300, 5,200 and 4,000 years ago. Lastly, the analysis also supports Ohio State University researchers' prediction that these unique bodies of ice will disappear in the next two decades, the victims of global warming. These findings were published today in the journal...
