BARRIE, Ont. - Police blame some serious distracted driving for a chain-reaction crash that caused more than $100,000 in damage after a teenager struck a parked car in this city north of Toronto. Police said the driver was texting and trying to pick up her cat when the collision happened. Cops said the teenager was speeding when she lost control of the car, left the roadway and struck a car parked in a driveway. It was pushed into a boat, which was also in the driveway. The boat was then pushed into the house and a neighbour's vehicle. The driver...

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759 A couple of days ago, I read an article about how police in Michigan (go figure) were forcing motorists to surrender their cell phones upon being detention for traffic violations. They are using the common tactic that most liberals and anti-constitutionalist morons use that "if you have nothing to hide, you'll do what I ask." This, of course, is false logic. "If I've done nothing wrong, there is no reason to ask" is the proper...

I went to a wedding in a big church out in the Sandhills of Nebraska this morning, but before leaving on the long drive, I got all set up in the usual standard customary blue three-piece pin-striped suit, when I suddenly remembered something. There was a bonfire on Skins's island the other day, where the primitives were talking about cellular telephones, and Playboy Pedro mentioned that some time ago at a wedding party, he had gotten drunk and dunked his cellular telephone into the wedding punch.         Mobile phone firms plan to find out what you’re talking about . . . and tell advertisers   Elizabeth Judge   Mobile phone companies have drawn up plans to monitor text messages and voice calls and pass the information to advertisers. Companies such as Motorola have developed technology to scan messages for information about where customers are and what they are doing. They claim that the service would be used only with customers’ consent. But privacy groups had deep concerns about the technology and the potential for phone companies to abuse it. Under the Motorola plans, software...

Apple Inc.'s iPhone is leading a new wave of gadgets using touch-sensitive screens that react to taps, swishes or flicks of a finger. The improvements promise to be slicker and more intuitive than the rough stomp of finger presses and stylus-pointing required by many of today's devices. Apple has already been showing off its finger ballet in video ads ahead of the smart phone's hotly anticipated launch...

The U.S. International Trade Commission's decision represents a compromise between a ban on all phones with Qualcomm chips, as Broadcom requested, and a ban only on the chips themselves, as recommended by an ITC administrative law judge late last year. ~ snip ~

Cellular subscribers are paying hundreds of millions of dollars each year to subsidize land-line telephone service, enriching big telecommunications companies while providing little or no benefit to cell-phone users. The subsidies are intended to reimburse the companies for providing traditional phone service in rough terrain and rural areas where stringing lines can be costly. But rampant development has transformed some of these backwaters into booming subdivisions, with no real adjustment to the distribution formula; others, such as the oceanfront celebrity playground of Malibu, are receiving subsidies simply because of their difficult topography. Outdated formulas for tabulating the surcharges -- coupled...

The big deal isn’t the iPhone itself, which is what the mainstream investment, gadget and tech media is focusing on. It’s the way that it will fundamentally challenge how carriers have coupled services with connectivity with a hardware distribution monopoly. There never has been ‘net neutrality’ when it comes to mobile phone hardware. The Apple iPhone would be the first big test. The new (rumored) iPhone will be sold (rumored) directly from Apple and (rumored) require the user to pull the GSM SIM card from their device (only T-Mobile or Cingular use GSM domestically) and insert it into the...

The term "3G" proclaims the next revolution in wireless technology. It refers to the much-ballyhooed third generation cellular network services, currently available in the United States from Verizon, Sprint and Cingular. But after all the hype, is 3G living up to its broadband promise? Cellular wireless networks were originally created for voice-only communications. As their popularity grew, cellular network providers began to piggyback data on their networks. At first, this was great for simple text messages, but the masses soon clamored for full-blown Internet and e-mail access. Voice communications over cellular wireless networks has remained somewhat constant over the years...
