The Puget Sound Free Republic Chapter has been in existence since June 1998, but it hasn’t been a smooth ride. While starting a chapter is not all that difficult, keeping one alive is a genuine challenge. People come and people go from this site, and maintaining an active chapter is more than enough work for one individual. This is the story of one chapter. My purpose is to provide some object lessons for other Chapter Executives and some pointers for those who want to start and maintain a chapter. In the Beginning In the dark ages, Free Republic had neither ...

Freepers: I work at a university which is just about as left as you can get. Of course, in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, what do you expect? But there are about twenty conservative faculty (most under "deep cover") and at least 100 conservative students. We have been meeting off-campus under a variety of guises, but if we go formal: 1.) the University will find some reason to deny us recognition; 2.) those conservative faculty members who are not tenured will be in trouble; 3.) the students who openly belong will not be flunked--but they will be denigrated. Until such...

Hello You People, The Kentucky Chapter Meeting is now concluded. I wish we could have had a larger turnout. But we had fun, nonetheless. In attendance were RonPaulLives, SomeCallMeTim, Skinkinthegrass, BlueOneGolf (and his family), and Lurker Jeff. To quote SomeCallMeTim, "I learned a great deal about Kentucky politics that I didn’t know. It was also really fun to hear the various brands of Conservatism that we all have. So many viewpoints and varying priorities.... but, we all were united in our love of Liberty. I guess this constant unites Freepers more than any other." A-men to that. We have decided...

The Capuchin Franciscans began their 83rd General Chapter this morning in Rome with a Mass celebrated by the community's first cardinal in half a century, Boston's Sean P. O'Malley. The gathering, held at the order's International College of St Lawrence of Brindisi, runs until 17 September. The chief order of business awaiting the 200 or so delegates is the election a new General Minister in succession to Canadian Fr John Corriveau, who has reached the limit of two six-year terms. While the order will release an official summary of each day's activities, interested parties would be wise to keep...

Russia and China yesterday opposed key provisions in a UN draft resolution that orders Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions, making an agreement unlikely before ministers come to New York next week. Both nations object to the use of Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, used in dozens of Security Council resolutions for peacekeeping missions and other legally binding actions. Although Chapter 7 allows for sanctions and even war, a separate resolution is required to specify either step. Moscow and Beijing, which have veto power, fear too much pressure on Iran would be self defeating or precipitate an oil crisis....

CORLEONE, Sicily - Decades before Mario Puzo borrowed its name for his novel about a ruthless Mafia family and Marlon Brando brought "The Godfather" to life with a throaty voice, Corleone — the town, not the don — had its own bloody story. For generations, this medieval mountain town overlooking rolling fields where sheep and horses graze has been home to the murderous Corleonesi crime clan. The capture this month of Bernardo Provenzano, reputed chieftain of the Corleonesi crime family and No. 1 boss of Cosa Nostra across Sicily, ended one shameful chapter in the town's life. While breathing a...

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In the spring of 2001, President George W. Bush asked the U.S. Congress to delegate to him a 6-year chunk of Congress constitutional authority over international trade through a process called Fast Track. Bush seeks Fast Track trade authority (which his Administration is attempting to rename "Trade Promotion Authority") to expand the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA.) The proposed NAFTA expansion, formally called the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), would spread NAFTA's rules to an additional 31 Latin American and Caribbean nations by 2005. The publicized goal of the FTAA proposal is to facilitate...

Howdy HOT (Heart of Texas) FReepers and other political activists. This month our FReeper group is planning a very informal meeting (just like most) at Bennigan's Restaurant, in one of their private rooms. Verona, one of our favorite black Republicans, a lurker, and a Travis County precinct chairman, has volunteered to lead us in a discussion on perspectives of "What it's like to be black in America." Perhaps we can share with her our perspectives of "How whites react to blacks in America," etc. Be prepared to ask her questions or share your experiences, also. Hopefully, we can get a...

Free Republic's International Influence It's FReepathon time again and, as grateful FReepers, we thought it would be timely to let people know how much Free Republic has influenced political events in Canada. Two and a half years ago we started Free Dominion as the Canada Chapter of Free Republic. When we launched our website we were touched by the moral support of hundreds of FReepers who contacted us and wished us well. We have been encouraged by our involvement in the Free Republic Network, educated at the Las Vegas FR Convention, and we enjoy being members of the FR forum....

Just and urgent reminder that there is an election in Broward County Florida on March 11, 2003. With one stealth homosexual lawyer (trantalis) running for the Fort Lauderdale city commision, and other smaller cities having their commisions up for election it is VERY urgent that Freepers make sure their voices are heard. Broward County has been the butt of jokes and still has many democrat party controlled problems. This is an off election and the politicians COUNT ON low turnout! so VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!!!!!

Attention Bay Area FReepers: Some of us have loosely discussed getting the Bay Area/San Francisco FReeper Chapter up and running again. I've been communicating with Diotima, Director of Chapter and Member Services, Free Republic Network, who tells me that there is a chapter, but it doesn't have a leader. When asked if I would be interested in taking up that role, I said yes, but I'm willing to leave that open to all of you. I don't have a ton of experience with this stuff, but I'm willing to give it a go, especially if no one else wants to!...
