  • Cops in Freddie Gray's death: Could politics tangle prosecutor's case? (+video)

    Christian Science Monitor ^ | 5-2-2015 | Patrik Jonsson
State prosecutor Marilyn Mosby bears a heavy burden in prosecuting six Baltimore police officers for the death of Freddie Gray. The activist sweep of her announcement could complicate the task. A questionable arrest, a moment of lost humanity, and actions of a "depraved heart" – those ideas are at the center of the legal case against six Baltimore police officers whose actions on April 12, the state alleges, led to the “homicide” of Freddie Gray, whose death roiled Baltimore and intensified anti-police brutality protests nationwide. “To the youth of this city, I will seek justice on your behalf," Baltimore state...

For a new state china service, First Lady Michelle Obama wanted it to have modern elements, but also for it to be practical, in the sense that it would be complementary to the preceding historic state services. The Obama State China Service consists of eleven-piece place settings for 320. Mrs. Obama sought a different color from the more primary red, green, blue, and yellow used on the more recent state services. She chose a blue inspired by the waters off the President’s home state of Hawai’i, calling it “Kailua Blue.” A fluted band of the Kailua Blue color, framed by...

Bullying, at any age, is horrific in and of itself. However, when the bullying is initiated simply because someone does something in a manner that the bully does not agree with, and for no other reason, and the bully refuses to back down and leave things as they are, the bully becomes a much bigger threat. This was the case in a high school where a bully, described as a “thug,” would not back down and followed a student back and forth between two classrooms while students looked onward, refusing to step in and help the bullied boy out. The cause of...

    WSJ ^ | 4-27-15 | Jennifer Carlson
Sociologist Jennifer Carlson says Americans will become more bitterly divided over the place of guns in society. The most significant development won’t be a nationwide swing toward gun rights or gun control—but a widening and entrenched gulf that will divide Americans politically, socially and even technologically. Gun-control initiatives will follow the approach blazed by the gun lobby, shifting away from the national stage and focusing increasingly on state-level efforts in places like California, Colorado, Connecticut and Washington. With the gun debate focused on state-level politics, high-profile shootings will exacerbate the division between these two Americas: in restrictive states, a demand...

$212.46. That is what the average family of four spent at a major league ballgame last year. For the budget-conscious, that price tag makes it mighty tempting to stay home and enjoy the boys of summer on TV—either a live game or a classic baseball movie. But watching some of the most fondly remembered films about the national passtime suggest that maybe both the game’s time and what made America great are passing. Here are five films that make the case.5. Moneyball (2011) Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill take the Oakland Athletics from a mediocre, going-broke franchise to a cash-cow...

"I just killed a pig," wrote one tweet, showing a bloodied police officer slumped on the ground. Not only was the photo of an officer in South America, but the account sharing it was not in Baltimore. Another tweet, which appeared to be coming from the Baltimore police, asked, "Why are we even tweeting?" and suggested that the protesters couldn't read. It also referred to them with a racial slur.

If a person happens to point out that Baltimore’s criminally inept government has been run exclusively by Democrats since 1967 (with one Republican mayor since 1947), and features not a single council member who isn’t a liberal, they may be called a “lazy apparatchik.” Because not everything, you see, is reducible to mere party politics. Now, if an economic renaissance sparked by the progressive policies of Stephanie Rawlings-Blake had lifted Baltimore from poverty, I imagine Democrats would be eager to claim credit for the accomplishment. Entire political debates are predicated on the effectiveness of partisan ideas. We blame presidents for...

More than 100 hospitals have closed since 2010, and the pace has quickened in the past couple of years. Hospitals are closing at about the same rate in urban and rural areas, but health care analysts say the effect often is more pronounced in small towns, where residents typically must travel farther to get to the next nearest hospital. Some answers to common questions about hospital closings:

A new Norwegian study has shown that alcohol and drug abuse is much more common among patients suffering from schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression than in the population at large. The study, conducted by the Norwegian Institute for Public Health, looked into the extent of drug and alcohol dependence among Norwegians diagnosed with serious mental health disorders. Every fourth patient with schizophrenia and every fifth with bipolar disorder also suffered problems with substance abuse.  One in ten people who were severely depressed also had problems with alcohol or drug-related health problems.  It is estimated that one in forty Norwegians indulge...

So when Crawford saw that a local Louisville, Ky., police officer was tending to a small car wreck on her street on Tuesday, she had an idea. “I thought, ‘How cute would it be if I got a picture of Jaxon pulled over?’” she tells Yahoo Parenting. “I waited for him to finish up...

Panzanella, and other hearty sides! Every year around the first of June, my office has a barbecue party. Thinking of a side dish to take this year, I remembered one that I haven't made in a while. I first had 'Panzanella' - or Tuscan Bread Salad - at the home of a friend, and looked for a recipe of my own. This one is very good: Tuscan Bread Salad 1/2 loaf day-old dense, country-style bread (I always use Italian bread) 3 medium tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced...
