  • Cuba mulls legalizing gay marriage

Cuba could pass legislation allowing same-sex marriage later this year, according to the daughter of President Raúl Castro. Mariela Castro, the country’s premier sexologist, made the remarks one day after US President Barack Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage, but said Cuba still needs to be "more revolutionary" in its treatment of gays. Ms. Castro said she "has the hope that this year" parliament will pass legislation to legalize gay marriage in Cuba, although the bill under debate by lawmakers here "sad to say is not everything that we would have hoped for." Castro looked to another of its neighbors, Argentina,...

533 Nostrand Avenue (between Atlantic Avenue and Herkimer Street), Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn; (718) 789-1155.“Pastrami, baby!” whooped a dreadlocked diner recently at David’s Brisket House. “As salaam alaikum, pastrami!” This Bedford-Stuyvesant institution inspires vocal exuberance, the subtext of which seems to be: Thank goodness for Brooklyn, where Yemeni Muslim guys serve exemplary Jewish deli sandwiches to a predominantly African-American crowd. The cultural mashup of David’s only adds to the charm of its pastrami. Such personality! So hot and sweet and sassy. It’s irresistible piled on rye with spicy brown mustard, or even with mayonnaise, as some here prefer (all beef sandwiches are...

May 10, 2012 11:24am Time Cover Shows 3-Year-Old Breast-Feeding This week's cover of Time Magazine shows a mother nursing her 3-year-old son. Should a mom continue nursing her child even after he’s too big to be held in her arms? For mothers who practice what’s known as “attachment parenting,” the answer is an emphatic “yes” — and some are more than happy to demonstrate. This week’s cover of Time Magazine shows Los Angeles mother Jamie Lynne Grumet nursing her 3-year-old son, who reaches her breast with the help of a chair. “When you think of breast-feeding, you think of mothers...

They had a sale on elbow pasta, aka macaroni. 75cents/ I ran to the store with a pocket full of quarters and bought 8 pounds worth. I figure if I only ate macaroni it would last me 2 weeks. I might go back tomorrow and buy another 16 pounds of it. Or more. In front of me at the checkout was a guy counting out nickels dimes and pennies for a pack of smokes. About 6 bucks...about the same amount I spent. I couldn't help but notice the irony. Here it is the day before payday and he's down nearly...
  • 'Will & Grace' Co-Creator Says Joe Biden Mentioned Show Prior to Gay Marriage Endorsement

When Vice President Joe Biden spoke out in support of gay marriage Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press, he touted the network’s former hit Will & Grace as having done much to educate people on the subject. It apparently wasn't the first time Biden had spoken similar words. The show’s co-creator Max Mutchnick said Biden had mentioned Will & Grace in a similar context several weeks before his endorsement. “My husband and I were at a private function two weeks prior to the Meet the Press airing,” Mutchnick said Thursday on CBS This Morning. “Vice President Biden was talking to...

The Lusty Lady has been serving the nude dancer and peep show needs of North Beach for nearly 30 years. But now that it is facing financial problems, San Franciscans should remember the club's place in the city's colorful history.A case can be made that the Lady is the most pro-feminist strip club in the city - and maybe in history. In 1996, the dancers at the Lusty Lady created a national sensation when they became the first nude club to create an "exotic dancers union." Seven years later, they had another landmark moment when the dancers banded together to...

Practicality may not be something shooters think about all the time; if that was the case, .50-cal rifles would be a lot less popular on the civilian market . However, while we may look at some guns and think, “Now why would anyone need THAT?” chances are the Herculean handgun that looks like it was hauled in by a flatbed trailer doesn’t hold a candle to some of the most impractical handguns in history. Whether they were too costly to make or just plain ineffective, here are eight of the most impractical handguns in history.

KEMAH, Texas (AP) - Police say a man arrested in a Southeast Texas city for riding his unicycle in the nude was distracting drivers and creating a hazard. Kemah (KEE'-muh) police Chief Greg Rikard (RY'-kurd) says 45-year-old Joseph Glynn Farley was not intoxicated or impaired when he was arrested Wednesday on a bridge in the city 20 miles southeast of Houston.

This undated sketch portrait of Gen. Benedict Arnold by an unknown artist was provided by the Library of Congress. While most Americans know Arnold as the man who betrayed his nation by trying to turn over the American fortifications at West Point to the British, then joining the redcoats when the plot was uncovered, his heroic actions at the Revolutionary War's Battles of Saratoga are detailed in a new exhibit opening Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Saratoga National Historical Park. ALBANY, N.Y.—Benedict Arnold is a hero again, at least temporarily, at two upstate New York historic sites where his...

    1. I was listening to the Hugh Hewitt show a few hours ago and a guy called in, a medical employee at a hospital. He said that he happened to be checking out two Black patients in different rooms who had no connection to each other. Both of them had family members visiting them. In both situations, the subject of Obama approving gay marriage came up and in both cases, the family members were irate and said they were going to "stay home" on election day. Sure, it's anecdotal but it could be significant. Blacks have a higher rate of...

The oldest-known version of the ancient Maya calendar has been discovered adorning a lavishly painted wall in the ruins of a city deep in the Guatemalan rainforest. The hieroglyphs, painted in black and red, along with a colorful mural of a king and his mysterious attendants, seem to have been a sort of handy reference chart for court scribes in A.D. 800 — the astronomers and mathematicians of their day. Contrary to popular myth, this calendar isn't a countdown to the end of the world in December 2012, the study researchers said.

Well it is official. President Barack Obama “personally” supports gay marriage, yet he still hasn’t stated whether gay Americans have the right to actually legally marry. The issue of gay marriage careened into the spotlight when Catholic Vice President, Joe Biden, affirmed on Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that he is “absolutely comfortable” with “men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying.” Obama’s Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, followed Biden’s comments by saying, "Yes, I do," when asked whether gay couples should be able to legally marry. After days of media speculation and fiasco, the president finally...

If this mandate can be federalized, via a federal constitutional amendment that says that marriage shall only be between one man and one woman, then why did RNC head Reince Priebus say on Andrea Mitchell Reports the following: "Governor Romney and the Republican Party have been pretty clear, marriage is between one man and one woman. We believe ultimately that you can't federalize that kind of mandate, which is why we believe that individual states can make that decision on their own." If Romney had not signed the pledge some time back that called for a federal constitutional amendment that...

Explanation: It was really not about superheroes as on May 6 the much touted Super Moon, the largest Full Moon of 2012, rose over this otherwise peaceful harbor. And no supervillains were present either as boats gently rocked at their moorings near the checkerboard La Perdrix lighthouse on the coast of Brittany, France. But the rise of the Super Moon was preceded by a Green Flash, captured in the first frame of this timelapse video recorded that night. The cropped image of the frame, a two second long exposure, shows the strongly colored flash left of the lighted buoy near...
