KENNEBUNK, Maine (AP) -- This upscale southern Maine town is known for its ocean beaches, old sea captains' mansions and the neighboring town of Kennebunkport, home to the Bush family summer compound. But the talk of the town these days is the arrest of a local fitness instructor who's been charged with running a prostitution business out of her Zumba dance studio and secretly videotaping her encounters. Now the town is on the edge of its seat, waiting for the revelation of which of their friends and neighbors are among her more than 100 alleged johns.

When Swedish sixth grader Tilde Nrgaard opened her recently-delivered school class photo album, she was shocked to discover her picture showed with one eye too many. First everyone was laughing, Tilde too, because we thought it was funny, Tildes sister Anna told The Local. But then we noticed it made her sad and we realized it was actually quite bad that they never noticed the mistake. The photo-fixing foul-up was discovered following the distribution two weeks ago of the annual photo album for students at Mneskld school in Lidkping in central Sweden. According to Tilde, there was nothing unusual at...

Historical accounts from all over the world describe a spectacularly bright "guest star" in the night sky during the spring of 1006 -- what we now know as a supernova (SN 1006). Now astronomers think they have pinpointed the probable cause of that massive explosion, one thousand years later: a merging of two white dwarf stars. SN 1006 made quite a splash on its debut around May 1, 1006, in the constellation Lupus (the Wolf) just south of Scorpio. The critics raved! Monks in a Benedictine abbey in Switzerland marveled at the star's brightness, and commented on the variability of...
  • 'Bright Object' On Mars Actually Plastic from Curiosity Rover

    10/09/2012 3:23:28 PM PDT · by posterchild · 23 replies ^ | 09 Oct 2012
A small piece of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has apparently fallen off into the Red Planet dirt, scientists announced today (Oct. 9). Curiosity team members spotted the odd bright object on Sunday (Oct. 7) while studying photos of the rover's first Martian soil-scooping activity. Curiosity then spent much of Monday photographing the scrap further, allowing researchers to determine that it likely came off the 1-ton rover though they're still not sure what exactly it is, or if its absence will affect Curiosity's mission appreciably.

Business owners Dee and Gene Liboff of Woodland Hills, California, just wanted to show their support for Mitt Romney in the coming election by putting up a handmade sign in front of their home. But what they were shown in return is the ugly side of some Obama supporters. Ever since putting up the sign, the Liboffs, who are members of the San Fernando Valley Patriots, have been engaged in a running war with vandals who have cut, pulled down, torn apart and ripped the sign out of the ground. Every time it happens, the Liboffs...

One of Swedens biggest outdoor markets recently took place in Rttvik, central Sweden, and The Locals Oliver Gee was there to taste the bear meat, sample the local honey and get to the bottom of pig-blood pouches. Due to a healthy dose of bad timing, I ended up in Rttvik instead of Rome this weekend. But who needs Roman ruins when you can have Rttviks markets at your fingertips? Right? Two Swedes had invited me, a wayward Australian, on a day trip into the Swedish heartland to experience something they said would be typically Swedish. So, there I was on...

A Fossilized Scene of a Spider Attacking a Wasp, Preserved for 110 Million Years Paleontologists have discovered beautifully preserved species trapped in amber before but this one is extraordinary. It features a parasitic wasp that has become ensnared in a spider's web, with the owner bearing down on it for an attack. But just before the spider was about to have its meal, a drop of resin flowed down from above, freezing the moment in time. Researchers date the scene to the Early Cretaceous between 97 to 110 million years ago in the Hukawng Valley of Myanmar a...

Health officials have been sounding the alarm about a drug-resistant strain of gonorrhea, and data from around the world now suggests that oral sex could be the means of transmission of the so-called superbug. Gonorrhea (i.e., the gonococcus microbe) is said to be the second most commonly reported infectious disease in the US, and cephalosporins the class of drugs most commonly used to treat it are apparently no longer effective against the infection. As a result, scientists fear a global sexually transmitted gonorrhea epidemic. The New Yorker discusses the connection between gonorrhea (a.k.a. the clap) and oral sex:...
  • New Male Contraception Stops Sperm from Swimming

Scientists have found a way to stop sperm swimming, making the long-awaited male contraceptive pill a step closer to fruition. By ascertaining how to cut off the power supply that enables sperm to move, a man's wrigglers can now left twitching rather than swimming. The research, led by scientists at Monash University in Melbourne, may also provide clues on possible causes of male infertility.
