  • Missing Quebec maple syrup found in New Brunswick

A massive amount of maple syrup stolen from a Quebec warehouse last month has turned up in New Brunswick. Police say arrests are imminent after they found the syrup inside barrels at S.K. Export in Kedgwick, in northern New Brunswick near Quebec's Gaspe region. The RCMP and provincial police took part in the raids this week. The amount that was seized represents only a fraction of the 10,000-barrel, $20-million amount stolen in August. The warehouse that was targeted in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, about 160 km northeast of Montreal, contained 16,000 45-gallon barrels of syrup. Police believe the robbers pumped the maple syrup...
  • Computers Match Humans in Understanding Art

A computer-generated graph of similarities between 34 different painters, reflecting the similarities between the artistic styles of painters as were automatically deduced by the computer. Courtesy of Lior Shamir Understanding and evaluating art has widely been considered as a task meant for humans, until now. Computers tackled the question "can machines understand art?" The results were very surprising. In fact, an algorithm has been developed that demonstrates computers are able to "understand" art in a fashion very similar to how art historians perform their analysis, mimicking the perception of expert art critiques. In the experiment, published in the recent issue...

Imagine a Republican president was in the White House and the White House Military Network was hacked by the Chinese. Oh the Hew and the Cry of the Mainstream Media would be deafening. But because it's a Democrat - nary a peep. Imagine a Republican president when the countries credit rating was downgraded again during his term. The media would call for his immediate resignation. But because it's a Democrat, it's buried on the back pages if it is mentioned at all. Imagine a Republican president being caught covering up for Al Queda's murder of the Libyan Ambassador. And that...
  • Ryder Cup 2012: Europe beat USA after record comeback

'Europe's golfers produced a stunning final-day comeback to win the Ryder Cup at a shell-shocked Medinah. With the United States requiring only four points from the 12 on offer, Europe somehow secured eight and a half to clinch a historic 14˝-13˝ win. Martin Kaymer sank a five-foot putt on the 18th green to get his team to the 14 points needed to retain the trophy, before a Tiger Woods bogey in the final match gifted them overall victory. The win matches the record recovery of Ben Crenshaw's US team in Boston in 1999 and is the best from a European...

Consider these rather staggering numbers that turn Mustang into a hotter car than Shelby’s most potent chili. A total of 662 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 631 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm from an extensively modified and supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 tied to a six-speed manual transmission. I could go on for several paragraphs about the technical aspects of this car, down to “plasma transferred wire arc” coating (huh?) that protects the inner workings of the engine. How fast is it? Well, Ford’s F -1.60% Mustang Shelby GT500 will take you from a standing start to 60 mpg in the...

LINCOLN — Husker Athletic Director Tom Osborne announced his retirement at a news conference Wednesday, capping an eventful five-year stint at the head of Nebraska sports. He will retire, effective Jan. 1, and he will stay on for about six months after that deadline to assist the transition to a new athletic director. The university will begin its search for a new athletic director immediately. "It's been a real privilege to work with Tom," said University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman. "I think he's done an extraordinary job. He's stabilized the department.

  • NFL supports decision to not overturn Seahawks’ touchdown

In Monday's game between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, Seattle faced a 4th-and-10 from the Green Bay 24 with eight seconds remaining in the game. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball. While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It...

Monday's debacle only crystallizes what was already clear: NFL's substitute officials are a joke, and it's time for Commissioner Roger Goodell to end lockout.Hail Mary. Holy hell. On the final play of the final game of one of the most shameful weekends in NFL history, a last-gasp pass from the Seattle Seahawks fell from the sky into the arms of the Green Bay Packers on Monday night. Touchdown, Seattle. Chaos, NFL. Three weeks of gross incompetence by unqualified replacement officials crystallized in two moments Monday night that pushed the league's integrity to the brink. In one moment, Packers safety M.D....
