It's one thing for professional athletes to have to make an ethical decision about using steroids, but college cheerleaders? Anna Watson has to be America's strongest female cheerleader; the University of Georgia student loves spending time in the weight room, and it certainly shows. But she has more important things in her life: Watson passed up a big money fitness modeling contract because she refused to use a legal steroid.

Anita Perry, the 59-year-old wife of Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, has been very actively campaigning for him on her own all fall. Now, she's taken on a new assignment. Mrs. Perry has launched an online drive to recruit hundreds of volunteers for what she calls the Perry Strike Force. This would consist of Perry fans who would travel to Iowa and work across the state Jan. 2-4, getting out Perry caucus-goers to the hundreds of meeting sites on the evening of Jan. 3. (Don't worry, the BCS Championship Game is not until Jan. 9 this time.) "With over 1,700...

Actress Hayden Panettiere was born and raised in upstate New York, lives in Los Angeles and has no roots in the nation's capital. But she's passionate about securing full representation in Congress for District of Columbia residents. That's what led Panettiere to the John A. Wilson Building, the district's city hall, where Mayor Vincent Gray proclaimed Friday as "Hayden Panettiere Day."

Perry's job creation record is formidable. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 32,000 new jobs were created in Texas in June, more than in any other state. Proving his policies were not a one-off, between June 2010 and June 2011 Texas added 220,000 new jobs, again more than the other "57 states," as President Obama might say. Perry is no "let's all get along" conservative. He wants to make a political difference, mentioning the revival of the 10th Amendment, which guarantees states' rights, as the way to reduce encroaching federal power: "America is not going to move forward until...

Nebraska girl born with no arms and legs has blamed unfair scoring after she failed to make her school's cheerleading squad three years in a row. Julia Sullivan, 16, has complained to the school board after she said she was given 'no accommodation for her disability' during try-outs. The wheelchair user did not make the team after she received a low score in the jumps/kicks category of the trials. Miss Sullivan got her highest marks in the communication skills and enthusiasm/spirit categories. The Aurora High School student, who said that she likes to dance, said: 'I just think it would...

One final note about the CNN Republican debate Monday night: Judging from the number of Leroy Jethro Gibbs slaps to the back of the head I've received, I am apparently the only person in the known universe who didn't think Michelle Bachmann stole the show. Obviously, I missed something that most of you saw. Now, back to the important things. The European Union is struggling to find a way to bail out the government of Greece in the face of its being unable to pay its debts. Countries - like Greece and the U.S. - borrow money to run their...

KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan, March 28, 2011 – As a college cheerleader, Mateo V. Salado was accustomed to being a member of a team. He lived, ate, worked out and competed with the same group of athletes every day. This year, he’s doing the same thing, but on a bigger team. “Being in the military and living in the barracks, eating in the chow hall, and going out and training is no different than an NCAA athlete on a scholarship,” said Salado, who’s now an Army specialist and infantry team leader. “This yearlong deployment in Afghanistan is our Super Bowl,” Salado...

Underneath headlines about Libya, the Japanese disaster and the Republicans’ dainty attempts to nip around the edges of our massive federal debt, the culture war is raging. The left is lobbing nukes into the institution of marriage and the military. Obamacare is going forward, complete with funding for abortion and massive increases in the size of the already enormous Department of Health and Human Services. Defunding this increasingly unpopular power grab should be in every budget bill - but it’s not. Using a combination of judicial activism, executive malfeasance and

An 11-year-old girl who was thrown off a Nebraska elementary school’s junior cheerleading squad because she refused to “shake her booty” says that while the gyrations may be a crowd-pleaser, she doesn’t think young girls should be moving their bodies like that. “It just felt wrong. I don’t know why,” Faylene Frampton said Wednesday during an interview on TODAY with Tamron Hall. “It j ust didn’t feel it was a cheer that was appropriate for kids of my age or younger.” The sixth-grader from Ashland, Neb., says she complained to cheerleading coach Tina Harris in the past that she did...

Madison Heights, Mich. (WXYZ) - Jennifer Tesch's six-year-old daughter has been removed from the Madison Heights Wolverine flag football cheer team. The Madison Heights mom contacted Action News last month because she was upset about the words to one of her daughter's cheerleading chants. The cheer she objects to says "our backs ache, our skirts are too tight, we shake our booties from left to right." League members were outraged, saying it cast a bad light on the league and she should have handled it internally. The team voted to keep the cheer and voted unanimously to remove the child...

It is said that the first structure was built around A.D. 1000, by an ancient culture known as the Sinagua, also known as the Anasazi. The Sinagua's were obviously aware of its greatness, as this is where they built their homes and thrived off of the land. They were agriculturalists with trade connections that spanned hundreds of miles. They hunted game and gathered seeds and nuts to sustain themselves. By studying petroglyphs, artifacts, and comparatives of indigenous and Hopi groups, Archaeologists and anthropologists describe Sinagua rituals as being closely related to the flora and fauna of the area. They utilized...

It was the sort of feel-good story that local television loves. A Marine lieutenant calls his hometown station, saying he is coming home early from a combat tour of Iraq and Afghanistan and wants to surprise his wife -- with the cameras rolling. But because Lt. Denver Edick's wife is a cheerleader for the Washington Redskins, the easy score turned into a turf battle in which ABC, the network that pitched the idea, wound up barred from FedEx Field, while the team handed the ball to the NBC station in town, which happens to be its broadcast partner.

With a portfolio that includes the middle class, stimulus spending, Iraq and politicking for endangered Democrats, Vice President Biden should be cutting a high profile. But the Obama administration's avuncular No. 2 has evolved -- after a sometimes bumpy first year -- into a classic guy-behind-the-guy. He stays busy but rarely makes news, and he's a trusted presidential confidant -- but not exactly in the inner circle. "He's had the occasional gaffe but he's stayed very much behind the scenes -- in the tomb of the unknown vice president," said Cindy Rugeley, a political scientist at Texas Tech University. "He...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an exuberant cheerleader for his policies to fight global warming. At times, unfortunately, his exuberance gets the best of him. A recent example is a May 18 speech he delivered to the International Low Carbon Fuel Symposium at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. During the speech, Schwarzenegger claimed that development of ethanol and other biofuels could help reduce gas prices, which now average about $3.45 a gallon in California. "The Low Carbon Fuel Standard is our best weapon against rising oil prices and gas prices because a vibrant market in alternative fuels and alternative vehicles, alternative...

Bonnie-Jill Laflin always stands out when she's in a crowd. As a former cheerleader, model and actress it's hard not to. On this day, however, she's standing out more than usual. There's no crowd at the Los Angeles D-Fenders-Arkansas Rimrockers NBA Developmental League game at Staples Center, where Laflin is the only person sitting in the seats behind the D-Fenders bench. While the game changes leads at breakneck speeds, Laflin, wearing a plaid blazer, Capri pants and folding her Dolce & Gabbana-boot-covered legs, is jotting down notes in a folder. It's an interesting sight for a woman who has been...
