For most mothers, the love they have for their child is unconditional. And if that wasn't the case, few would dare admit it. Which perhaps explains why a woman breaking that social taboo has chosen to write under a pseudonym. In an article published today in the latest issue of REDBOOK, the mother-of-two, who calls herself Jennifer Rabiner, confesses how she has never been able to love her eldest child.

NEW YORK – Ridiculous or ultra-enlightened? A Toronto couple's decision to keep the gender of their 4-month-old baby a secret has touched off a sometimes nasty debate over how far parents should go in protecting young ones from society's boy-girl biases. Kathy Witterick and David Stocker recently landed on the front page of the Toronto Star, explaining that they hope their third child, Storm, can remain untouched by the connotations of pink versus blue, male versus female, long enough to make up his or her own mind. The decision has online haters and supporters of the family on hyperdrive. Child...

If the tests are accurate enough then a form of screening could be introduced in the same way we test for some diseases.

"He's been asking me for weeks to get him a Nintendo DSi for Christmas," Alicia explained. Her son, Alex, is only nine. Christmas is well over a month away but he's been relentlessly pressing for the "must-have" electronic toy that his classmates already own. Money is tight for Alicia's family these days, and the handheld device starts at 149.99. Games are extra, at $35 a pop. Alicia doesn't indulge in expensive clothes, trendy bags, or "must have" purchases-at least for herself. But when it comes to her son, mom-guilt too easily clouds her perspective. And retailers and advertising gurus wouldn't...

I have evaluated numerous children whose only problems are that they live with loving and dedicated parents who are wimps. There is no psychological test yet to diagnose this disorder, but here is how you can assess yourself and perhaps avoid a visit to a therapist’s office. 1. Are you more concerned about your children’s feelings than their behaviors? Wimpy parents care excessively about making their children feel comfortable. While feelings are important, the real world judges us all on actions. Wimpy parents are reluctant to require their youngsters to do anything that may feel uncomfortable. One parent told me...

PARIS (AFP) – An 18-month-old boy survived after falling seven floors and bouncing off a Paris cafe awning into the arms of a passer-by, witnesses said Tuesday. "My son saw a little boy on a balcony. He had gone right outside the railing... I said to myself I mustn't miss him," the toddler's saviour, local doctor Philippe Bensignor, told AFP, recounting Monday's drama. "I had time to move from side to side to get in the right position," he added. "The little boy was fine. He cried a little bit but calmed down straightaway." "We were closed yesterday but the...

Court won't let Calif. cut child care fundsBy SARAH ROHRS/MediaNews Group Created: 10/31/2010 02:31:06 AM PDT With child care for tens of thousands of children at stake, an Alameda County Superior Court on Friday issued a temporary restraining order to prevent state cuts from going into effect. The move comes in the wake of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto of $256 million in child care funds before signing the new state budget into law. Child care funding to assist working parents coming off welfare rolls would have expired Monday. Advocates have worried that parents, unable to afford child care, would either...

The last insurance company writing "child-only" health policies in Minnesota has pulled out of the market. Minnetonka-based Medica said Friday that it is no longer selling policies that cover individuals under the age of 19. The child-only market is a small sliver of the state's individual insurance market and it serves parents who have employer-sponsored coverage for themselves but not for their children. Last month, three other insurance companies in Minnesota said they were dropping out of the child-only market because of changes prompted by the federal health care overhaul that Congress passed earlier this year.

A move by insurance companies to stop selling child-only policies is drawing criticism ahead of Thursday, when the federal health overhaul will require insurers to cover sick children. Aetna Inc., Cigna Corp., WellPoint Inc., Humana Inc. and UnitedHealth Group Inc.'s Golden Rule subsidiary say they will no longer sell new child-only policies. The new law requires them to accept applications from sick children on insurance policies that they sell, but doesn't require them to sell a policy individually to children in the first place. Insurers said children with pre-existing conditions will be able to apply for coverage on their parents'...
