Logic takes us strange places sometimes, like when a judge found herself writing this little gem: "The purposeful viewing of child pornography on the internet is now legal in New York." That's a sentence you'd want to wash your hands after committing to paper (heck, or wash your eyes after reading), but it comes at the end of a line of reasoning in an appeals court decision that makes sense even if it appears to provide a loophole for kiddie porn lovers. Essentially, the court ruled on Tuesday, you can't be held responsible for things you just see online, even...

Paedophiles have won unsupervised access to their own children because it would breach their human rights to keep them apart, judges have ruled. They ruled that the "right to a family life" must be taken into account before the "sexual offences prevention orders", known as SOPOs, are issued. The ruling, issued after a legal challenge by a group of men convicted of using the internet to view child pornography, significantly weakens the ability of the criminal courts to place restrictions on paedophiles. It means judges cannot impose blanket bans on men and women convicted of child sex offences spending time...

Should children who snap racy photos on their cellphones and send them out to their friends be punished as child-pornography distributors or sex offenders? No, a Florida Senate panel said Monday. At least, not the first time they get caught. For the second consecutive year, the state Legislature has taken on “sexting,” the practice of sending sexually explicit text messages, photos or videos, usually via cellphone. A bill that has cleared two committees in the Senate and one in the House of Representatives would decriminalize sexting as a first offense for children who are under age. A similar measure passed...

Faced with mounting foreign and domestic pressure, Japan’s government has been forced to rethink how to handle the country’s huge market in child pornography, raising hopes for an overdue ban on possession. While it is illegal to produce or distribute child pornography in Japan, possessing it is not – an anomaly Japan shares with only one other G8 nation, Russia. The release last month of national police agency figures showing a dramatic rise in the number of known child pornography cases coincides with new calls for the government to take action. Yet, say campaigners, national legislators lack the political will...

MTV turns 30 this year, and it is wasting no time as it rushes headlong into a mid-life crisis. The cable network, first known as Music Television, pioneered the music video as constant entertainment and, from the beginning, it pushed the boundaries of morality and taste. Indeed, it pushed far past those boundaries. The network, now older than many of its young viewers, first flaunted parental concerns with music videos that featured explicit sexuality. Later, it added racy programming to its mix, effectively competing against more traditional networks for viewers. The programs brought more viewers - and plenty of controversy...
