Officials say at least two people were killed and 13 others injured in a blast Sunday in front of the Santa Maria Catholic Church. There was no immediate word about injuries at other sites. Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city. Debris is seen outside Santa Maria church, where an explosion went off in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, May 13, 2018. Media reports say simultaneous attacks on churches in Indonesia's second largest city of Surabaya have left casualties.

Saudi Arabia has agreed a deal with the Vatican to build churches for Christian worshippers in the Arab country, it is claimed by Middle Eastern media. If confirmed, the supposed agreement between Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Mohammed bin Abdel Karim Al-Issa of the Muslim World League would mark a historic first in Saudi history. The cardinal has visited Saudi Arabia this year and met the royal family, urging the Muslim country to treat its citizens equally.

Parents, pastors, politicians and educators will join a Muslim imam at a mosque Friday in Oakland County, Michigan, to pray and discuss how to make their schools and community safer in an era of mass school shootings. The Muslim Unity Center, a mosque in the wealthy Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, is hosting an "Interfaith Prayers and Symbolic Walkout Vigil" April 20 that feeds off of the anti-gun fervor created in the wake of the Parkland High School mass shooting that killed 17 students in February.

I am relocating in a few months and would like to live in Southern California. It could be almost anywhere -- Santa Barbara to Temecula. The one **attraction** I am after is to find an evangelical (and Bible teaching) church with a choir, no entertainment, no band nor drum set on stage. Maybe, even a place where the pastor-teacher wears a tie and slacks, not jeans and a t-shirt. Seriously --- Am I hoping for too much?

Many ancient and beautiful churches and monasteries, dating from the Byzantine era and dotting the mountainous landscape of Albania, have fallen into ruin due to years and decades of neglect. However, a program is has recently begun for the reconstruction of ancient temples, with the hope of attracting more tourists, reports tvkultura.ru. Before the First World War Albania was Turkish, and became socialist after the Second. The regime, which was one of the most severe, fell in the early 1990s, but during the reign of Enver Hoxha from 1944 to 1985, churches continued to deteriorate. Churches and mosques were often...

We live in an age where privacy is quickly becoming a relic from the past, much like dial-up modems and AMC Gremlins. No longer can we have a "reasonable expectation of privacy" in our communications, whether online or on our smartphones. Oh, legally we still have some privacy rights, but rogue individuals and organizations are increasingly releasing sensitive information in pursuit of some perceived higher calling. It used to be that conversations with medical professionals, counselors, lawyers, and clergy were inviolate — what you said in the privacy of their offices stayed between those four walls. No more. Now we almost...

Russia’s Orthodox Church has opened 30,000 churches over the last 30 years, although it is expected to take until 2050 to return to what it was before the 1917 revolution, reported The Tablet. “Houses of worship aren’t built as architectural or artistic monuments – they’re there for the people,” Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev, the Moscow Patriarchate’s external relations director told Rossiya-24 TV. “And we don’t build churches to obtain impressive statistics, but because people want them. It shouldn’t be forgotten that the construction or renovation of most churches is financed by the faithful – both small people and big entrepreneurs.” Metropolitan...

On Dec. 4, about 20 members of the group — The Crafty Ladies of Immanuel — will travel to the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (hospital) in Tucson to present veterans with 175 lap covers. Some are knitted, some crocheted and others are machine sewn. The women also make body covers, sewn in patriotic colors and used to cover veterans who have died while hospitalized. “If...

Just over a month ago, an organization sent the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority an advertisement it was ready to pay good money to post on the backs and sides of Metro buses. The ad used only four words: "Find the Perfect Gift." These words were spelt out in the main message of the proposed ad as well as in a web address (FindThePerfectGift.org) printed beside it. Two of the words also appeared in a social-media hashtag printed at the bottom of the ad (#PerfectGift). Now had this advertisement been produced by Macy's, Nordstrom or Target -- to draw traffic...

On Wednesday’s Morning Joe, while discussing President Trump’s remarks to reporters yesterday on the White House lawn, NBC News Capitol Hill correspondent Kasie Hunt decided to do an impromptu campaign ad for Democratic senatorial candidate Doug Jones, who is Roy Moore’s opponent in the Alabama special election. Part of Hunt’s pitch involved the fact that Jones is best known for prosecuting the perpetrators of the infamous 1963 Birmingham church bombing that killed four black girls. Co-host Mika Brzezinski instantly saw a connection between this piece of information and Trump’s earlier claim to journalists that Jones is “soft on crime.” From...

Domum Dei decet sanctitudo: Sponsum ejus Christum adoremus in ea. Such is the Invitatory Antiphon, which sums up the liturgical thought of the day: “Holiness becometh the House of God: let us adore therein Christ her Spouse.”What is this mystery of a house that is at the same time a bride?—Our churches are holy because they belong to God, and on account of the celebration of the holy Sacrifice therein, and the prayer and praise offered to the divine Guest who dwells there. More truly than the figurative tabernacle or the ancient temple, they are separated, solemnly and forever...

According to concealedcarry.com, concealed carry is banned in only two states, Nebraska and Louisiana. It requires permission from a church leader in seven states, Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Carolina. In the other 41 states, you have the right to conceal carry in church just as you do in other private property. The church may ban the practice, just as you may in your own home. But there is no law to prevent you from exercising the Second Amendment in church. Dean Weingarten Gun Watch

An online database launched Wednesday singles out churches opposed to homosexuality ostensibly to encourage clarity in whether various churches support LGBT lifestyles. The database, called Church Clarity, scores churches on whether they are “clear” or “unclear” in their message of being “affirming” or “non-affirming” toward LGBT relationships. Church Clarity takes aim specifically at evangelical churches and accuses them of having a dangerous “capitalist mindset” and of being purposefully unclear in their policies toward LGBT relationships .

My brother Jerry is a deacon in his all-black church. Jerry called to tell me he confronted his pastor, telling him it is unchristian to include a hateful rant against Trump in every sermon. His pastor firmly believes Trump is a rabid racist. I asked Jerry, "What was your pastor's response?" Jerry said his pastor gave him the same blank stare he always receives from fellow blacks when he states commonsense views that are contrary to Democrat lies believed by that most blacks. Condescendingly, Jerry's pastor said he understood his concerns. Meanwhile, his attacks on Trump from the pulpit continue....

Churches in California still are being forced to pay for abortions in their health insurance plans after a federal court dismissed a legal challenge by three churches Friday. Churches across California have been battling the onerous abortion mandate for years with no relief. The troubling situation began in 2014 when the California Department of Managed Health Care reclassified abortion as a “basic health service” under the Affordable Care Act and ordered all insurance plans in the state to begin covering elective abortions immediately. Even churches are not exempt. Friday was another defeat for the churches in Foothill Church v. Rouillard...

'The court's decision ignores the longstanding freedom of faith communities to act' within their mission! Churches in California are deliberating their next move after a federal court ruled Friday that they must – no exceptions – pay for what they consider sin. It’s the abortion payment funding requirement in their health insurance plans. The Alliance Defending Freedom, a non-profit legal organization dedicated to “advocating for religious liberty, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family,” warned in a statement that its battle with the courts on behalf of the churches for religious freedom is far from over. “If the state...

To Shawn Teamann, posting a sign of the Ten Commandments in the front yard of his North Huntingdon home is an affirmation of his faith and his stance against what he sees as an erosion of religious freedom in America. “It's just standing up for what you believe in. We feel religious freedom is being taken away,” said Teamann, a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Irwin. Immaculate Conception has joined with the two Roman Catholic churches in North Huntingdon — St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Agnes — in distributing about 1,000 signs to members of the three...
