President Barack Obama hosted a Cinco de Mayo party at the White House -- "even though it's only tres de mayo, we just like to get the fiesta started early around here" -- and promised to push for a comprehensive overhaul of America's immigration policies if he's reelected. "There's still plenty of unfinished business, including fixing our broken immigration system," he said. "It's long past the time that we unleash the promise of all our young people and make the DREAM Act a reality." Mitt Romney has vowed to veto the legislation, which would allow some undocumented immigrants brought to...

Imagine five Jewish kids go to school one day wearing their yarmulkes. The school's numerous skinhead students are furious. At lunch they mill around in the school yard, muttering threats and complaining to the assistant principal that that their political beliefs have been insulted. The assistant principal responds by calling the Jewish kids into his office and ordering them to take off their yarmulkes or go home. Then imagine further that when the kids go to court to get help, the judge replies: Sorry, fellows, you've misunderstood the concept of free speech. It only lasts until a fascist bully threatens...

Should public school officials have the right to prevent students from wearing pro-American garb on Cinco de Mayo? This question has been at the heart of a California court battle between the Morgan Hill Unified School District and students who were told by a principal and assistant principal that they could not wear American flag t-shirts on the Mexican holiday back in 2010. Following the incident, a lawsuit against the district was launched by the students and their families. This week, the case came to a close, with a federal judge ruling against the students — a blow that is...

Houston-area teen Nick Morris last year was outraged that his H.S. hung the Mexican flag above the American flag for Cinco de Mayo. When his Mom complained and they ignored her, Nick ripped down the flag and threw it in the trash. A year later, this military-bound teen has no regrets and would do it again. But he won't have to, because THIS year the school did not decorate for 'Cinco' at all. Which goes to show how when people stop being afraid and stand up to the La Raza nonsense, we win. (snip) The crowd learned a little tidbit about the first lady, courtesy of her husband. Said Obama: "I asked Michelle the other day, I said, ‘What’s your favorite food’ -- because we were sitting around with the girls. She said, ‘Ah, Mexican food.’" The crowd loved the news. "You do not want to be between Michelle and a tamale," joked the president. "It’s true. It’s true. But she’s moving, though, so she can afford to have as many tamales as she wants," said Obama in a nod to his wife’s "Let’s Move" healthy campaign.

It was shaping up to be another rowdy Cinco de Mayo in San Jose late Thursday, as police and emergency crews were busy breaking up crowds, picking up the glass from shattered windows and treating people who had been beaten up and even stabbed. As of 11 p.m., one person had walked into Regional Medical Center after being stabbed in the festivities and several other people had suffered more minor injuries, Assistant Police Chief Diane Urban said. "Many fights, we've had multiple fights along Santa Clara Street," she said "And it's busy." The crowds had also knocked out windows of...

President and Mrs. Obama welcomed a big crowd to the White House for a Cinco de Mayo reception in the East Room. Hispanic politicians, Hispanic Americans serving in the Obama administration, and members of a commission on exploring the creating of a new national museum of the American Latino were among those in attendance. "Welcome to the Cinco de Mayo at the White House," Obama told the enthusiastic crowd before promising he wouldn’t speak too long. "Nothing ruins a good fiesta like a long speech from a politician, so I’m going to keep it short." The first lady agreed that...

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico. So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862....

School board's motion to dismiss...denied! "The controversy from Cinco de Mayo 2010 at Live Oak High School that spurred a federal civil rights lawsuit by the parents of three students who were asked to turn their American T-shirts inside-out or leave school is moving through the federal judicial system after Federal Judge James Ware issued his decision Thursday." This means that the case will continue and the judge recognizes that it is a First Amendment issue, which the school denies.

Two fans were asked to leave the Phoenix Suns game last week after they wore “Viva Los 1070″ shirts to the game. Alex Pappas at The Daily Caller reported: Two fans at a Phoenix Suns basketball game were ejected from their first row seats and removed from the arena last week after refusing orders from security guards to take off their shirts in support of Arizona’s recently passed law against illegal immigration. One of the fans, businessman Jim Clark, said he and a friend, who were wearing orange shirts that read “Viva Los 1070,” eventually were allowed to return to...

MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- Heated words were spoken Wednesday night at a packed school board meeting in Morgan Hill as parents railed against administrators in charge of the high school where a controversy over students wearing American flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo erupted last week. Wednesday will mark one week since a Cinco de Mayo incident at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill flared up into a national story when four boys came on campus wearing t-shirts with the American flag and patriotic colors. From what occurred at a public meeting of the school board Tuesday night, it...

The impression is spreading that I have drawn an equation between the American flag and the hammer and the sickle. I'm currently serving for target practice on some right-wing websites, and a group of Tweeters are having jolly fun portraying me as an America hater and worse. This is the result of one single Twitter of mine, and those who were eager to misunderstand it. Tweets are limited to 140 characters, and here is what I tweeted: @ebertchicago Kids who wear American Flag t-shirts on 5 May should have to share a lunchroom table with those who wear a hammer...

Film critic Roger Ebert is never shy with his opinions, be they about movies or otherwise. But after criticizing five California teens who chose to wear clothing bearing the American flag to their high school on Cinco de Mayo, Ebert has faced a particularly angry backlash. On his Twitter account, Ebert, whose battle with thyroid cancer has disfigured his appearance and taken his voice, wrote the following: @ebertchicago Kids who wear American Flag T-shirts on 5 May should have to share a lunchroom table with those who wear a hammer and sickle on 4 July. Ebert's words set off a...

Last week, Americans of all nationalities celebrated Cinco de Mayo; some, like me, acknowledged the day by partaking of margaritas and carne asada. Others, like the Mexican students at Live Oak high school in Northern California, observe the day by wearing the Mexican colors of red, white, and green. In a gesture meant to display American pride, five Live Oak students--Daniel Galli, Austin Carvalho, Matt Dariano, Dominic Maciel, and Clayton Howard--decided to wear American flag t-shirts and bandannas. After receiving complaints from some Mexican students, Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez asked the boys to turn their shirts inside out. The boys...

Two 17-year-old boys were wounded, one critically, in a shooting Sunday afternoon in south Minneapolis, police said. The shooting, at W. Lake Street and 5th Avenue S., near the site of a Cinco de Mayo celebration that continued in its wake, was the culmination of an argument between two groups, said police spokesman Sgt. Bill Palmer. He said it was too early to tell if it was gang-related. One victim suffered a life-threatening shot in the chest and the other suffered foot and leg wounds, Palmer said. Both were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

Californians were recently confronted with a sobering reality. Students at a large high school in the Morgan Hill district were told by school administrators that American flag tee shirts and other patriotic paraphernalia were not allowed, citing Cinco de Mayo as justification. Few students at the school probably realize that America provided help to Mexico in expelling the French, whose defeat at the Battle of Puebla is commemorated on May 5. How can American flags be "offensive" on a day that is almost as much American as it is Mexican? Cinco de Mayo is not even celebrated as a national...

It’s funny how things can begin from a relatively minor event. In my world history classes, we’re discussing the beginnings of World War I. Invariably when discussing this topic, students marvel at how one assassination was the spark that threw Europe–and eventually the United States–into a bloody conflict. Arizona passed a law allowing their law enforcement officers to do what the federal government should have been doing for years. Chaos ensued. Days later, on Cinco de Mayo–a holiday that Mexicans don’t even really celebrate, according to one of my Mexican-American basketball players–two students were forced to leave school because they...

Tensions are rising at a California high school where five students were sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo. More than 200 Hispanic students reportedly skipped class on Thursday and marched to school district headquarters while chanting "we want respect" and "si se puedes" -- "yes we can" -- the Morgan Hill Times reported. "We did this to support the Latino/Hispanic community," Francine Roa, a 2005 Live Oak High School graduate, told the newspaper. At least six Morgan Hill police vehicles traveled alongside the students, many of whom carried Mexican flags. No arrests were made related...

Another strange occurance in the age of Obama that an overwhelmingly large portion of the the activist media is not reporting on, is the recent story of these American flag T-Shirts. The principal of Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California instructed kids who decided to wear their American flag T-shirts on Cinco De Mayo, were instructed to either turn their shirts inside out, take off their American flag bandanas, or be sent home. The ultimatum was delivered when students who were celebrating Cinco De Mayo found that the American flags were "offensive" to their celebration.

In the suburbs of Silicon Valley, not far away from San Francisco Bay, there are apparently particular days for patriotism, at least according to one high school in Morgan Hill. On Cinco de Mayo, several students decided to wear clothing with American flag designs to make a statement about their own views on heritage — including one Hispanic student. Teachers demanded that they either turn their shirts inside out and remove all other American flag-themed clothing or face suspension for “defiance.” Their parents are outraged:

Five students at a California high school were forced to leave school and then face disciplinary action yesterday for the crime of wearing clothing printed with American flag designs. If you’re wondering how being patriotic could possibly merit punishment, it’s because the kids displayed the American flags on May 5. And as everyone knows, American flags are absolutely verboten on May 5. Right? Doesn’t anybody remember that rule? Anybody? Bueller? ....

With a brutal drug war still raging in the Mexican border towns of Reynosa and Ciudad Juarez, and now the fear of a strict immigration bill in Arizona that makes it a crime to not carry immigration documents, you might think Mexicans would look forward to something worth celebrating... Today is also just a few weeks after Holy Week, the last time those who could afford it may have taken time off from work to celebrate anything... Though many people in the U.S. regard this date as a celebration of Mexico's...

NEW: The Arizona Governor also signed HB2162 (PDF), an amendment to the original SB1070. HB2162 changes “lawful contact” to “lawful stop, detention or arrest.” HB2162 removes the word “solely” from "may not solely consider race, color or national origin in implementing the requirements of this subsection." HB2162 also reduces some fines, etc. SUMMARY OF THE NEW ARIZONA LAW (SB 1070): ● Mirrors the federal law that since 1940 requires aliens to register and carry their documents with them.[2] ● Targets ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Americans do not oppose legal immigration. Why is it racist to ask people to come through the...

ˇHola! That's a little Spanish lingo there, for those of you in Rio Linda. It means "Hello!" Yes, today is Cinco de Mayo, the "Fifth of May," an excuse to eat at Mexican restaurants and drink margaritas, which is always a good thing. But for the DUmmies, of course, this day, like every day, is Cinco de Mao, a time to celebrate international socialism and everything anti-American. The big buzz over in DUmmieland the past week or so has been the law passed in Arizona to crack down on illegal aliens. Now who could be against that? We're talking...

PHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns will wear "Los Suns" on their jerseys in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday night, owner Robert Sarver said, "to honor our Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation." The decision to wear the jerseys on the Cinco de Mayo holiday stems from a law passed by the Arizona Legislature and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer that has drawn widespread criticism from Latino organizations and civil rights groups that say it could lead to racial profiling of Hispanics. President Barack Obama has called the...
