Thursday, March 29, 2012 Rick Santorum stops young man from bowling with pink ball"Friends don't let friends use pink balls." (NEWSER) -- Rick Santorum bowls a good game, but gay rights groups say he talks an offensive one. "You’re not gonna' use the pink ball. We’re not gonna' let you do that, not on camera," he told a young man while bowling with college Republicans in Wisconsin yesterday, the Raw Story reports. "Friends don't let friends use pink balls," he added. Critics say Santorum's remarks are just the latest in a long line of insensitive statements. "He’s proven that he thinks LGBT...

While in Washington DC for CPAC 2012, Brandon, Kelsey and I decided to take a walking tour of our nation’s capital in the frigid February weather. As we strolled down K Street, we (somewhat intentionally) stumbled upon Occupy DC’s encampment at McPherson Park. While Kelsey and I at first kept a safe distance by taking pictures of the movement’s signs from across the street, Brandon marched boldly into the center of the camp. After several minutes, Brandon was nowhere to be found, so Kelsey and I decided to search for our fellow CR. Considering the environment, we had no idea...

ovington VA --(Ammoland.com)- The Radford University protest on Wednesday was a success, even if the weather didn’t really cooperate. Despite the rain and the fact that we could not hand out our brochures and stickers unsolicited, we still handed out 500 brochures and even more stickers. Eryn Bartholomew (Vice-President of the Radford College Republicans), VCDL EM Dave Knight, and I spoke at the event. We met with the police and student event staff early so they could go over the rules with us for our protest. We also paid for our tables, which we were required to stay near during...

The Berkeley College Republicans have taken a strong stance against a proposed law that would allow, among other things, race to be taken into consideration during the admissions process. They say on a Facebook event page: "The Berkeley College Republicans firmly believe measuring any admit's merit based on race is intrinsically racist." In this note I'll show that their belief is wrong. Not only is the use of race in admissions not intrinsically racist - the failure to consider race and other similar factors is intrinsically racist. This is not some subjective interpretation of histories of oppression. This is not...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Some Vanderbilt University religious groups will have to change their policies or risk being shut down. The university told Nashville's News 2 a number of groups are in violation of the school's nondiscrimination policy. In a statement, Vanderbilt University said, "Last academic year, an undergraduate made an allegation of discrimination against a student organization. As a result of that allegation, we sought to ensure that the more than 300 student organizations were aware of their need to comply with the university's longstanding nondiscrimination policy." Stephen Siao is the president of the college Republicans. "The policy that they've...

It's meant to be racist, and it's meant to be discriminatory. But the controversial "Increase Diversity Bake Sale" hosted by the Berkeley College Republicans is still on, the club's president said, despite "grossly misguided comments" and threats aimed toward supporters of the University of California Berkeley student group.During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1, black men for $0.75 and Native American men for $0.25. All women will get $0.25 off those prices. The bake sale is meant to draw attention to pending legislation that...

For the second year in a row, the University of Iowa College Republicans hosted "Conservative Coming Out Week." For those of you who have been holed up in the library studying for finals, here's a quick recap. On Monday, the College Republicans sent out an approved e-mail to the entire university community and received more than 105 responses. This is normal for one of these e-mails; however, one response was quite different. It came from tenured UI Professor Ellen Lewin. Her message was, quite simply, "FUCK YOU, REPUBLICANS," with her credentials listed below. Despite this hateful rhetoric, the next day...

The right of JMU students to wield guns was the hot topic the week before spring break. "The issue on our campus is that anyone is allowed to bring a gun on campus, but it's illegal for a student or faculty member to carry a [concealed] gun," said Emily Buck, a senior and co-chair of College Republicans. She said she is concerned that the current law infringes on students' ability to defend themselves if someone were to come on campus with a firearm. Buck said that even if an area is gun-free, that doesn't at all mean it is safe....

Like any other conservative running in 2010, Christine O'Donnell hopes that a November 2 victory signals the end of a damaging era in American Politics. For Christine; however, there is an added weight to the occasion. . .she would be the winner of an open race that could throw the Democrat's plans for a lame-duck counteroffensive into a tailspin. Christine is running for Vice President Joe Biden's open Senate seat in Delaware. Because Biden has vacated his term, her reign as Republican Senator would begin immediately on November 3 and the Senate make-up now at 59 Democrats, generally filibuster proof,...

Illinois College Republicans are preparing for an especially busy year, and this weekend, nearly 50 representatives met at the Chicago Marriott to hear from candidates they'll be promoting at their perspective Illinois schools throughout November. Newly re-elected ICRF state chairman Matt Zimmerman said the organization is looking forward to one of its best years in a long time. "We do think 2010 will be a good year for Republicans," Zimmerman (blue shirt in photo) said. Not a man of many words, the Eastern Illinois University student is better known for the work he encourages among College Republicans. Illinois' CRs, whose...

Okie doky, then all liberals are American hating, pot smoking hippies, homos, and un-patriotic. Isn’t that a fair comparison? I mean, the liberal movement really got its momentum in the 1960’s during the anti-war rallies which were immersed in illegal drug use. They burnt American flags and spit on returning American Soldiers from Viet Nam, that is pretty un-patriotic, and American hating in my book, maybe those of you on the left thought that was patriotic. Unlike the recent events at the Tea Party rally in Washington, DC, there is audio and video of the left spiting on Soldiers and...

There were several Dixie State College students doing just what he suggested at the event. Robert Sinnott, a senior English major from Woodbridge, Va., is the co-chair of the DSC chapter of the College Republicans. He said the College Republicans were there to help set up the stage and other equipment, and to support the Tea Party cause. He said this cause is rooted in limited government, fiscal responsibility and stopping runaway spending. "It lets people know that we are involved and we care about the cause," he said. Attendees also included Congressional candidate Neil Walter and Senate candidates Mike...

Much Ado About McCain Bethany Stotts, January 25, 2010 Meghan McCain, that is. She’s scheduled to speak at George Washington University (GWU) on February 9 as the keynote for “Marriage Equality Week” on the topic of “Redefining Republican: No Labels, No Boxes, No Stereotypes,” according to a January 14 GW Hatchet article. The event was originally co-sponsored by the GW College Republicans, but the group withdrew its support amid “claims that the Allied in Pride president was not forthcoming about the topic of McCain’s speech,” reported Madeleine Morgenstern for the GW Hatchet on January 19. The GW CR’s Jan. 19...

The GW College Republicans have withdrawn their financial support from Meghan McCain's upcoming appearance at GW, after claims that the Allied in Pride president was not forthcoming about the topic of McCain's speech. Michael Komo, president of Allied in Pride, told The Hatchet last week that McCain would be appearing as the keynote speaker of their annual "Marriage Equality Week" in February, but the CR leadership claims they were not aware of this when they were asked for their financial support. McCain, an outspoken advocate for gay rights, is the daughter of former Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain. "Our...

In the Obama White House, the new adage “never let a crisis go to waste” has highlighted the President’s overwhelming domestic agenda. So much so, in fact, that it is clear the President is missing opportunities to make real changes, and is instead delivering empty promises, growing problems, and enlarging the national debt. Set against the backdrop of some $12 trillion in debt, the President is calling for even more spending in the form of health care reform, which the CBO estimates will cost upwards of $1 trillion. While health care reform is an important issue, the President has failed...

Dispersed between the speakers we bring in (great success with Amb John Bolton last week btw) and activist projects we work on, the University Republicans like to have some fun in adding to the political discourse on campus. This upcoming event is a great example. I thought readers would find the event info quite amusing and so pasted the event info below. Be on the lookout come Monday from 12:00-1:30 on the University of Chicago Quad as YOU have a chance to become a Nobel Peace Prize recipient! Yes, you could join the venerable ranks of activists like Henry Kissinger,...

If you’re sick of hearing bad news you’ve starting reading the right column today. Everyone else is talking about the end of the world. There are predictions of war in the Middle East. There’s talk of an even greater economic downturn in the not-too-distant future. Some people are even predicting the Union will begin to dissolve in a few short years. But I’m spending the week telling stories, real stories, about some great people and some great organizations that give me hope. Stick with me for the next few days and you’ll probably feel a whole lot better about your...

After last weekend's California Republican Party convention, a spokeswoman for potential Senate candidate Carly Fiorina dissed the results of rival Chuck DeVore's self-commissioned straw poll, telling CNN's Peter Hamby: "Let me get this straight, you want me to comment on a Chuck DeVore straw poll that was conducted in the DeVore hospitality suite on Saturday night with a bunch of college Republicans and a lot of free beer flowing?" Beer and college students may go together like Republicans and no-tax pledges, but can candidates really capture conservative students' support with an abundance of ale? Not so easily, according to Michael...

Apologies if the sources are questionable but there was almost no media coverage of this convention that I could find, or, at least, containing anything of not about McCain's speech. Salon reports today: As for those principles, well, it was left to John McCain to rally the troops. "You are a brave band of warriors," McCain consoled the delegates. "And you will be able to look back some day and say look, I was part of the Republican Party when times were the toughest. … It's hard trying to do the Lord's work in the city of Satan." And, the...

Leigh Wolf graduated from San Francisco State University this spring and most recently served as Co-Chair of the California College Republicans. In 2008 under Leigh's leadership, SFSU was named College Republican National Committee Chapter of the Year. Ultimately, he was successful in leading the most effective chapter in the country. Leigh will be honored on Friday during our Biennial Convention in Washington, D.C. During the convention, we'll also be electing the next National Chairman of the College Republicans. A special thanks to all of our nominees for their hard work and continued efforts to the conservative cause. Don't forget to...

Liberty University will no longer recognize its campus Democratic Party club because its parent organization stands against the conservative Christian school's moral principles. The club, which has about 30 members, will no longer be able to use Liberty's name, hold on-campus meetings or be eligible for student activities money. "I think it does the university a great disservice to stifle one side of the discussion simply because we are Democrats,'' said Maria Childress, the club's adviser and an administrative assistant at the school. Brian Diaz, president of Liberty's Democratic club said he was informed of the school's decision in a...

The College Republicans student club set up a table on the San Francisco State University quad, offering information about and speaking out against the Fairness Doctrine, which would require broadcasters to provide balanced and fair views of an issue. Though the doctrine was eliminated in 1987, there is some talk of reinstating it. Conservative groups - like the College Republicans - oppose that move because the doctrine could curb conservative talk-radio shows. James Kincaid, president of the San Francisco State College Republicans, and three other club members were gathering signatures for a petition to stop the Fairness Doctrine when Jacob...

As y'all know, countless citizens gathered the other day (500 in Chicago) to form local "tea parties" in protest of government's recent, egregious actions when dealing with the economy and wasting our tax dollars. However, most media outlets just ignored this massive movement across the nation. I had the honor of speaking at the Chicago Tea Party, posted the speech, and also made a general video about the event I wanted to share with you. Feel free to link this up to your own blog and share with friends. We have to keep the passion alive! More tea parties to...

Phyllis did not see the edge of the podium, which was hard to see, missed the step and fell on her right hip....

Karl Rove, one-time deputy chief of staff to former President George W. Bush, spoke to a jam-packed Storer Auditorium at the University of Miami Thursday afternoon. After a brief opening speech, Rove transformed the event into an open forum during which audience members could ask him a question or engage him in a debate. The “campaign architect,” as he is commonly called, built a case against President Barack Obama’s order to close Guantanamo, an overseas CIA detention center where terrorists and other “enemy combatants” are held. Obama’s order could enable terrorists to be tried in U.S. courts, to be given...

College conservatives say the excitement of a historic presidential election — which could send the first black American to the White House — has become clouded by an atmosphere of intimidation and hostility on campus. “People on campus who say they’re the most tolerant, they simply do not walk the walk,” said Brand Kroeger, chairman of the George Washington University College Republicans and head of the D.C. Federation of College Republicans. Mr. Kroeger said he has been flooded with calls from students who feel they cannot express their views in favor of Republicans for fear of being shouted down. GW...

“Serra Palin” theme in honor of Republican VP candidateThe First Dudes are on the ground floor, the Hockey Moms on the second. CNN was forced to apologize Thursday after it aired an interview on American Morning with a University of Southern California student whom it identified as Eric Pearlmutter, a College Republican, who said that there was little enthusiastic support for Sen. John McCain's candidacy on campus. Following the broadcast Ben Myers, president of the USC College Republicans, shot back saying that he had never met or seen Pearlmutter at a College Republican meeting and that Pearlmutter is not even a member. "As far as I know, he could be a Democrat," Myers told the Los Angeles Times. On Thursday night a...

If a reporter wanted to test the enthusiasm of College Republicans at a campus for John McCain, one might think that they would look up the officers of the chapter and arrange a few interviews. CNN apparently found that a little too difficult at USC yesterday, so they just stopped the first person who claimed to be a Republican. Andrew Malcolm reports on the aftermath: The president of the College Republicans at the University of Southern California is charging that CNN used a “fake College Republican” in its broadcast report today, claiming there was a lack of enthusiasm for the...

Controversies Crop Up Around Commencement Speaker Selections by Jamal Watson May 5, 2008, 22:24 Earlier this year, NAACP chairman Julian Bond journeyed to the U.S. Supreme Court to interview Justice Clarence Thomas. The event was somewhat historic, in part because Bond — a staunch supporter of affirmative action and other social programs — has long been a critic of the policies and positions espoused by Thomas. But now, both of these historic figures in Black history are the subjects of much scrutiny as they prepare to deliver commencement speeches this month at two East Coast universities. A group of conservative...

A group of Bay Area College Republicans took to the streets of San Jose Friday evening to protest a subject near and dear to them - beer. More to the point, they wanted to rant about a state lawmaker's proposed tax on beer manufacturers that would add nearly $2 to the price of a six-pack as a way to help the state plug its giant budget deficit. "This is a tax on poor students," said Leigh Wolf, 21, of the San Francisco State University Republicans. "They're using a bunch of studies to justify this beer tax, but you don't need...

SAN FRANCISCO -- To the relief of a campus Republican group, the 417,000 students at California State University's 23 institutions no longer face the possibility of discipline for failing to be civil to one another. The change was part of a settlement approved by a federal magistrate in Oakland this week in a lawsuit by the San Francisco State College Republicans, whose members were subjected to a disciplinary hearing after some of them stomped on two flags bearing the name of Allah during an anti-terrorism rally in October 2006. The flags represented the militant organizations Hamas and Hezbollah and had...

SAN FRANCISCO, March 4, 2008—Yesterday, San Francisco State University (SFSU) settled a lawsuit challenging its speech codes by agreeing to modify several unconstitutional policies to make them consistent with the First Amendment. The settlement also requires SFSU to pay damages to members of the university's College Republicans as well as to pay the College Republicans' attorney fees. The lawsuit—part of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education's (FIRE's) Speech Codes Litigation Project—was filed in July 2007 by attorneys from the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF). "Unconstitutional speech codes have been dealt yet another blow," FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. "This lawsuit...

Chalk one up for the PC guy. No, we're not cheering for political correctness here. I'm talking about those ads for Macintosh computers where the cool Mac guy always gets the better of the frumpy PC fellow. When two college political leaders out in Iowa appeared on the Good Morning America screen today, I immediately suspected a set-up. I couldn't help but think that ABC had intentionally staged the political equivalent of the Mac ads, with the Dem as the Apple dude and the Republican cast as PC guy. In the screencap, that's Atul Nakhasi, head of the U. of...

The College Republicans at Central Michigan University introduced their concept for a "Turn Michigan Red in '08" t-shirt in April of 2007, both as a fundraiser for their origanization and in an effort to show Republican unity heading into the 2008 elections. In the last few years, Central Michigan University has hosted liberal speakers such as Michael Moore, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Thomas Hayden and Wes Clark. There have been no high profile conservative speakers brought to campus in recent history.

Trying to debate with a liberal is probably one of the most maddening things that you will ever attempt to do. Their modus operandi is to cut off the conversation as quickly as possible, usually by declaring your argument "out of bounds," according to their debate rule book. Arguing with a liberal is kind of like arguing with the umpire in baseball, except for the fact someone actually gave the umpire his authority, whereas liberals just think that they were born with theirs. As conservative satirist Ann Coulter once brilliantly noted, "It's difficult to have a simple conversation ... when...
