While all national attention is focused — indeed riveted — on the seven to nine swing or battleground states, a major shift is taking place in the rest of the country: Voters are turning off Obama and onto Romney. In the forty states where the Obama campaign has not spread toxic negative ads against Romney, the Republican is gaining by leaps and bounds and will likely carry a bunch of “non-swing” normally blue states. Specifically, Romney is now three points ahead in Pennsylvania, one point behind in Michigan, and only two points behind in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Together, these four...

DENVER - Almost one million Coloradans have cast early votes, according to new statistics from Secretary of State Scott Gessler. The data also shows that more Republicans have cast early ballots than Democrats. Gessler's office announced that 965,510 people have voted so far. Of those, 343,721 were registered Democrats and 370,982 were Republicans. ...

Physicians Who Use Marijuana are 'Unsafe to Practice' MONTREAL, Canada — Physicians who legally use medical marijuana to treat their own debilitating conditions such as chronic pain or nausea are considered unsafe to practice medicine in the state of Colorado until such time that they no longer need the treatment, according to a policy from the Colorado Physician Health Program. "We took a conservative stance," Doris Gundersen, MD, Medical Director of the Colorado Physician Health Program, told Medscape Medical News after her presentation here at the International Conference on Physician Health (ICPH). "We don't want to deny them treatment...but until they no...

With Election Day still more than a week away, more than 600,000 Colorado voters have already cast their ballots, the Colorado Secretary of State's Office reported this morning. Secretary of State Scott Gessler's staff said that based on reports from Colorado's county clerks, 626,097 voters had returned their completed mail ballots or had voted in person at their county's designated early-voting polling places as of Friday morning. On a statewide basis, that included ballots cast by: 244,263 Republicans; 225,850 Democrats; 149,877 voters unaffiliated with any political party; 3,258 Libertarians; 1,159 Green Party members; 1,035 American Constitution Party Members; and 655...
  • Early Vote in Ohio, Iowa, Colorado, New Hampshire and Wisconsin

It's well known that Ohio is the key, and that Ohio state polls seem not to follow the national trend (Romney should be leading by at least 3-4, no polls showing him better than tie instead). RCP average in 2008 missed the real result in many states by several points (2.1 in Ohio, 2.5 in Indiana, 3 in Pennsylvania, 3.5 in Colorado, 5 in Arizona e 6 in Nevada) so maybe it's just due to the margin of error but it's worrying anyway. Anyway if Romney loses Ohio he has to win Colorado, Iowa, Wisconsin and New Hampshire (if he...

President Obama again on Friday defended his administration's handling of the attack that killed four Americans in Libya, and said he's not holding back information ahead of Election Day. "The election has nothing to do with four brave Americans getting killed and us wanting to find out exactly what happened," Obama said in an interview with KUSA, the NBC affiliate in Denver. "Nobody wants to find out more what happened than I do. But we want to make sure we get it right, particularly because I've made a commitment to the families impacted as well as the American people, we're...

A community college student has been arrested for the abduction, murder and dismemberment of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway, Colorado police said today. Austin Reed Sigg, 17, was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder and kidnapping. Sigg is a student at Arapahoe Community College, according to his arrest report. "Law enforcement received the major break in the Jessica Ridgeway investigation they have been hoping for," the Westminster Police said today. "Late Tuesday evening police received a call that led them to a home near the Ketner Lake Open Space."

I'm not sure that there is anything that is directly noteworthy about a massive crowd for a major-party candidate at the end of the presidential cycle. Both candidates will have at least 60 million people voting for them in this election, which means there are going to be lots of people who will show up for these kinds of events. But will they climb hills and mountains and trek out to the middle of nowhere to do it? The Denver Post put together this visually stunning video of Mitt Romney's event at Red Rocks, which also shows the difficulties that...

Mitt Romney is now leading in every state in today’s Solid South, including the three – Florida, North Carolina and Virginia – that Barack Obama won in 2008 and where his campaign has expended considerable muscle, money and candidate time. Moreover, the nationwide polls also show a marked shift to Romney since the first debate. The President, however, still maintains leads in most of the battleground states. In Florida, with a substantial 29 electoral votes, virtually all polls now give Romney the lead, with the Real Clear Politics (RCP) average showing a 2.1 point lead for the Republican challenger. The...

Well, I've dropped off my ballot.  Voted a straight Republican ticket, natch.  "No" on retaining all judges (never seen one kicked out, but I can at least try to make them think about job security!).   Ballot issues:  "No" on all except marijuana legalization.  If someone wants to get stoned, go ahead...it's none of my business any more than if they want to get drunk.

DENVER — Colorado voters could be filling out their ballots as early as Tuesday, with 1.95 million ballots now in the mail and on their way to voters across this critical swing state. Of the 3.6 million registered voters in the state, more than half of them are receiving mail ballots this week. According to Secretary of State Scott Gessler’s office, 1,950,185 ballots are being mailed out Monday. Of those, 598,503 are being sent to unaffiliated voters; 673,676 are being sent to registered Republicans; and 654,129 are being mailed to registered Democrats.

You need to read way, way, way down into this National Journal piece to find the key bit, but it’s worth it. Says Jay Cost, “I’ve never seen anybody bury a lede like Major Garrett here.” Let’s bring this treasure chest up to the surface: What also became clear after the dust began to settle from the rumble on Long Island was the electoral map has narrowed and Obama’s team, while conceding nothing publicly, is circling the wagons around Ohio, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Plouffe said that Obama remains strong in all four states, but he would not discuss...

Last night I was informed by my wife that a friend from our church told her that their son went to registar to vote. As he turned in the document, he was asked what was his party affiliation. He told them it was Republican. As he was leaving he heard what sounded like paper tearing. He turned around and asked them to produce his documentation. At first they told him that they could not and then finally after futher prodding admitted that they did in fact destroyed the documentation. He reported them to the election board.
  • Bishop to Biden: Don't take communion in Colorado Springs

The Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs has thrown down the guantlet to Vice President Joe Biden -- don't come here and expect to partake in Holy Communion. It seems Bishop Michael Sheridan, the person in charge of Catholics in Colorado Springs, doesn't approve of Biden's stance on abortion. The Bishop, following church doctrine, is opposed to abortion. Biden, meanwhile, has said he doesn't support the practice, but doesn't believe it should be illegal. In 2007 Sheridan wrote: "Any Catholic politicians who advocate for abortion, for illicit stem cell research or for any form of euthanasia ipso facto place themselves outside...

WE DIDN’T endorse Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy four years ago, but after he was elected we congratulated him on his victory and expressed our desire that his presidency would be successful. But soon after his inauguration, it became clear that his talk of “post-partisanship” and governmental transparency was just that: talk. He, along with then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi, rammed through Obamacare with almost no input from congressional Republicans. Recall Ms. Pelosi’s comment that “We have to pass this so you can see what’s in it.”

If businessman Coors has a good night on Nov. 6, so will Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, likely not only in Colorado but nationwide. Colorado is looking like a state that is the national average, perhaps a tick or two rightward, according to Sean Trende, a savvy number-cruncher and Yale-trained political scientist for the website RealClearPolitics. “So if Romney is winning Colorado, it probably means he is headed for a decent night,” Trende said of the relatively new electoral trend of a Western state signaling a presidential win. If Romney wins here comfortably, that probably means a national win on...

LAIRD, Colo. – This small Great Plains town is the terminus of a journey across the Rocky Mountain State on U.S. 34, greeting travelers from Nebraska and bidding farewell to Coloradoans. On either side of the highway stand two slightly oversized “Romney for President” signs. In the distance, in a town boasting 47 people, a stone octagonal house sits forlornly, its former glory faded by neglect and the elements. This highway and U.S. 36, passing through Jefferson and Arapahoe counties, give way to a state not at all like the one often envisioned, politically or economically, from afar. The 479...
