  • Are Public-School Teachers Underpaid?

    National Review ^ | 11/01/2011 | Andrew G. Biggs
Education Secretary Arne Duncan thinks public-school teachers are “desperately underpaid” and has called for doubling teacher salaries. In a new paper co-authored with Jason Richwine of the Heritage Foundation, I look into whether teachers really are desperately underpaid, or underpaid at all. Jason and I find that the conventional wisdom is far off the truth. At first glance, public-school teachers definitely look underpaid. According to Census data, teachers receive salaries around 20 percent lower than similarly educated private-sector workers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says teachers’ benefits are about the same as benefits in the private sector. But both the...

Greece wants a solution to its crippling debt that applies to all its sovereign bonds expiring up to 2035, a government source said on Monday, adding that the process should remain voluntary and any deal must include the European Central Bank. This would be a marked expansion from a previous, now defunct, plan agreed by the EU in July, under which Greece's debt burden would be lowered through a bond exchange involving paper maturing up to 2020. "We are looking at the entire Greek debt, expiring through to 2035... It does not stop at 2020 as the previous model did,"...

If you believe a column in Newsweek magazine, most of the Occupy Wall Street protesters are just regular folks, people like you and me. Writer Michael Daly puts forth that the demonstrators simply have had enough of an unfair economic system, and what's wrong with that? But a survey taken at the protest site in New York City tells quite another story. Pollster Doug Schoen, who once worked for President Clinton, had his staff ask 200 protesters to define themselves. -- Just 15 percent are unemployed. -- Most voted for Barack Obama in 2008, but now only 44 percent approve...

The Vatican has accused the BBC of an ‘act of enormous foolishness’ for dumping the terms BC and AD in case they cause offence to non-Christians. The Roman Catholic Church also severely criticised the ‘senseless hypocrisy’ of Britain’s public service broadcaster for using a false respect for other religions to purge Christianity from Western culture. ‘It is by now very clear that respect for other religions is only an excuse, because those who wish to erase every trace of Christianity from Western culture are only a few secular westerners,’ said a front page editorial in L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s official...

Drowning in red ink, Greece has nowhere to turn to revive the economic growth that might put its debt on a sustainable trajectory, reassure angry foreign creditors and offer hope to its recession-weary citizens. Instead, the country finds itself in a vicious circle—a death spiral, some would say—in which it is borrowing ever more to keep up on its existing debts, crushing growth in the process and thereby worsening its all-important ratio of debt-to-gross domestic product. Springing the debt trap would not be a miracle cure either: a manageable level of borrowing is a necessary but not a sufficient condition...

Economic Policy: The Democrats' aggressive push to extend the payroll tax cut for another year has nothing to do with boosting economic growth and everything to do with class warfare politics. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) made it known this week that it plans a full-court press to extend the temporary payroll tax cut into 2012. Enacted as part of the deal last December to extend the Bush income tax cuts, it trimmed workers' Social Security tax rate to 4.2% from 6.2% this year. Labor secretary: GOP governors asking workers to give up their rights By Michael O'Brien - 02/26/11 10:36 AM ET Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) is trying to force workers in his state to give up their rights, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said Saturday. Solis, speaking at the Democratic National Committee's (DNC) Winter Meeting, accosted Walker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) for their efforts to reform collective bargaining rights for public workers in their states. "We know that many states are facing tough budget decisions. We know there's room for shared sacrifice," Solis said. "But the governors in Wisconsin and...

TAKE THE BASTARDS DOWN song 'Take the Bastards Down’: SEIU’s New Favorite Song Has Violent Ring to it Posted on February 23, 2011 at 10:34am by Jonathon M. Seidl Print » Email » First violent signs, now violent songs. The band Dropkick Murphys wants to do its part to stand with the Wisconsin protesters. What does that look like? Actually it sounds like a new song, released on union websites including the SEIU’s, that screams such phrases as “take the bastards down!“ and ”we got to smash them to the ground!” “As part of the band’s efforts to support the...

From the website of the Revolutionary Communist Party, 2/10/2011...Israel and Its “Special Role” in Relation to U.S. Imperialism Posted 2/7/2011I have heard that some people don’t like my statement: “After the Holocaust, the worst thing that has happened to Jewish people is the state of Israel.” But this does capture something very important, and there is something very important to understand about the “special role” of Israel—not only in relation to U.S. imperialism in general, but also particularly in relation to the neo-con/Bush regime strategy.Read on… _______________________________HOSNI MUBARAK: A profile of an American-Backed Tyrant by Larry Everest Posted 2/7/2011Today, millions...

"It may sound strange to speak of Revolution, but that is what we need at this time. We need a Revolution; revolutionary thinking, revolutionary action. It is easy to mouth the words "sustainable development", but to make it happen, we have to be prepared to make major changes." Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Davos World Economic Forum 2011

As if we didn’t have enough wars, the House of Representatives has declared one against Planned Parenthood. Maybe it’s all part of a grand theme. Last month, they voted to repeal the health care law. This month, they’re going after an organization that provides millions of women with both family-planning services and basic health medical care, like pap smears and screening for diabetes, breast cancer, cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. Our legislative slogan for 2011: Let Them Use Leeches. “What is more fiscally responsible than denying any and all funding to Planned Parenthood of America?” demanded Representative Mike Pence...

So much for objectivity. One of the FCC stipulations of the Comcast – NBCU merger was the incorporation of non-profit journalism centers into NBC newsrooms. They are charged with maintaining and increasing local news coverage, the regulation based on the relationship between KNSD-TV and VoiceofSanDiego.org. KNSD airs the segments, but really can’t take all the credit for them. They are largely the work ofVoiceOfSanDiego.org, a local nonprofit journalism center that has been sharing news tips, co-producing and supplying content to the station for several years. [...] Under the terms of the FCC order approving Comcast’s takeover of NBCU, at least...

Editor: While remaining ambivalent to the nature of the Church and the State, the Holy Father restates the importance of the State in maintaining the moral order. Religion may not be merely limited as the participant in culture. Rom (kath.net/as) This Thursday morning Pope Benedict invited the new ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Holy See, Alfons M. Kloss, for the handing over of qualifications, with which this extraordinary and appointed emissary was accredited. In his address Benedict XVI. called Austria the "Land of Cathedrals", that in its culture, its history and not least in everyday life, the...
