Sen. Rand Paul told his communications director this morning he was being detained by TSA in Nashville. @moirabagley, the Twitter account associated with Paul staffer Moira Bagley tweeted around 10 a.m., ET, “Just got a call from @senrandpaul. He’s currently being detained by TSA in Nashville.” A spokesman for TSA said the agency was looking into the matter but could not immediately comment. Paul apparently set off an airport security full-body scanner, “on a glitch,” a spokesman in Paul’s office told ABC News. The Paul staffer said TSA agents would not let Paul walk back through the body scanner and...

Tax Foundation’s Runaway Compliance Estimates -By: Larry Walker, Jr. -"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." ~ Mark Twain -According to the Tax Foundation, federal income tax compliance costs were projected to reach $392 billion by 2011, and $483 billion by 2015. Now they say it’s probably in the ballpark of $400 billion as of 2011. So in other words, they figure that it costs taxpayers 20 to 40 percent more than is paid in taxes just to fill out and file the forms. However, what people echoing these numbers overlook is the fact that these...

If you’re wondering why the collection and analysis of counterterrorist intelligence still disappoints, a Department of Homeland Security document provides a glimpse at part of the answer. Congress requires the DHS to report annually on the privacy implications of any “data mining” activities it conducts. Data mining is a sophisticated information-analysis technique that sets computers to work sifting through electronic databases for significant patterns—the predilection of people who subscribe to Golfing to take Bermuda vacations, say. Companies and marketers constantly mine publicly available information and commercial data banks (such as credit-card records) to find new ways of understanding and enticing...

ACCORDING TO UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, Berkeley criminologist Franklin Zimring, the best way to survive a robbery is through "active compliance." In other words, do exactly what the criminal says, as quickly as possible. However, the statistics suggest otherwise. After examining data from the Department of Justice National Crime Victimization Survey from 1979 through 1987, Gary Kleck found that the best way to survive a criminal attack was to resist – with a gun. Women were 2.5 times more likely to suffer serious injury if they offered no resistance than if they resisted with a gun. Having a gun made the...

Owing largely to the “education” on law enforcement that citizens receive from television, several myths are commonly held beliefs. Myth: People shot by cops almost always die. Fact: Not only do most people live after being shot by cops, but the cops miss their targets more often than not. Myth: Detectives relentlessly pursue one case until it’s solved and they move on to the next. Fact: Detectives routinely have 50 or more cases in their caseload at any one time, and divide their time between them. Myth: DNA and fingerprint evidence can be analyzed almost immediately and identify any criminal....

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran reaffirmed its commitment to a nuclear arms control treaty Sunday and urged a peaceful solution to the international crisis over concerns it is seeking to develop atomic weapons, a day after its hard-line president issued a veiled threat to withdraw from the pact. Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, meanwhile, began a mission to Iran to learn just what controls remain on nuclear sites and equipment after Tehran ended all but minimum cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency. In Vienna, Austria, a diplomat told The Associated Press Saturday that some International Atomic Energy Agency...

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice scolded Sudan's government for failing to end bloodshed in the troubled region of Darfur but signaled a possible easing of US sanctions on humanitarian grounds. Rice had a round of talks with Khartoum leaders, demanded and got an apology for a dustup between her entourage and Sudanese security men, and visited battered Darfur. US officials said Rice made clear Washington would not improve ties with Sudan without a resolution of the crisis in Darfur, where up to 300,000 people have died in 29 months of fighting branded by Washington as genocide. "I told them...

At tax time, lots of money under table From gambling to painting to child care, not all income gets shared with the IRS.NEW YORK – Danielle L. teaches private swim lessons on Long Island. The $30 per 30 minutes she charges is just "a little extra" on the side. Bryan M. likes to play poker, and so far this year the student has made about $8,000. And painter Jack K. charges $600 in cash to brighten a room. It's more, however, if he gets paid by check. What all three have in common is that none of them declares these...
