I am watching the news before heading off to work and of course all the talk is about Facebook's IPO. Even one of the guys on CNBC was wearing a hoodie. There is all this talk about how tech IPOs have seen a "pop" in price of their new stock on average of 30%-40% on the first day of trading which would place Facebook as worth $50 on day 1 (35% over the IPO price of $38.) Why are Tech IPOs then systematically underpriced? If the Facebook IPO is so oversubscribed then why does Zuckerberg not say to whoever is...

George Zimmerman's new legal defense fund has raised over $15,000 this month, his attorney announced Wednesday. The $15,424 will be used to cover Zimmerman's ongoing living expenses and legal costs while he battles a second-degree murder charge in the Trayvon Martin shooting case, his lawyer wrote on The sum comes in addition to the $200,000-plus Zimmerman previously raised through a different website. That fund was shut down last month by attorney Mark O'Mara in favor of, which has hired an independent monitor to ensure the money is only used for reasonable living expenses and legal costs. I was more than surprised to see where the judge presiding over George Zimmerman's case questioned the source of $200,000 collected online and donated to Zimmerman's defense fund. Given Zimmerman's modest stature in life, there were no donations from money moguls with deep pockets. These donations were from the rank and file of average American citizens with no expectation of reward from Zimmerman should he prevail. The judge knew this and it is obvious that he sided with Trayvon Martin's parents in wanting to know where the money came from, thereby casting a shadow of its legitimacy. Apparently the judge,...

Back in March of last year, Illinois joined a small cadre of states putting a new tax on online sales into law. Backed by Gov. Quinn (D-Ill.), the law was designed to force out-of-state retailers who advertise in Illinois to collect and pay sales taxes. Yesterday, however, a Cook County Circuit judge rightly ruled the law violated the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The Supreme Court ruled in 1992 that states can not force out-of-state companies to collect and fork over sales taxes levied on in-state consumers, unless they have a physical presence in the state. That landmark case,...

The Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department is investigating a Facebook post by one of its captains that seems to blame the shooting death of Trayvon Martin on the "shi*tbag parents" of "our urban youth," and the "ghetto hoodie look" of young black men like Martin. The entry was posted on the personal Facebook page of Miami-Dade fire captain Brian Beckmann. The Facebook page bears the same profile picture as the entry, which appears to have been deleted, but which was captured in a screengrab sent to theGrio. The page's profile entry lists Metro-Dade Firefighters Local 1403. The entry appears to have been...

A few weeks ago, news broke that Trayvon Martin’s mother had applied to trademark the phrases “Justice for Trayvon” and “I Am Trayvon.” The news seemed to garner a mixed reaction. Some people found it slightly distasteful, while others saw it as both a way for a woman to gain any kind of restitution following an unspeakable tragedy as well as stopping others from misusing her son’s memory. Now, news has broke that some guy completely unrelated to the case has trademarked the phrase “I believe you Zimmerman.” In response to this news, some people found it to be a...

Although negotiations over a package of tax increases and a proposed casino collapsed Monday night, the Maryland General Assembly passed a lot of bills this session — 791, to be exact. Of those, 96 percent were passed in the last week, including hundreds in the hours and minutes before midnight on Monday. Here are some highlights from the 90-day session’s last day: STORMWATER FEE The Senate spent much of the session’s waning hours fiercely debating a stormwater fee bill that was on few people’s radar earlier in the session. The bill requires localities to fund projects to reduce polluted runoff...
  • Historian Unhappy About Zimmerman Citation

The New York Times' The Lede ^ | April 11, 2012 | Robert Mackey
An American historian is “not happy” to have been quoted prominently on, a Web site set up by the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida. As The Lede reported on Tuesday, the bare-bones Web site apparently controlled by the gunman, George Zimmerman, features a link to a PayPal account for donations, an American flag and quotes from writers — including Edmund Burke, Thomas Paine, Henrik Ibsen and James W. Loewen, an American sociologist and historian. The quote from Mr. Loewen is an observation made in his book, “Lies My Teacher Told...

When the Spanish, online voting company SKYTL bought the largest vote processing corporation in the United States, it also acquired the means of manufacturing the outcome of the 2012 election. For SOE, the Tampa based corporation purchased by SKYTL in January supplies the election software which records, counts and reports the votes of Americans in 26 states–900 total jurisdictions–across the nation. As the largest election results reporting company in the US, SOE provides reports right down to the precinct level. But before going anywhere else, those election returns are routed to individual, company servers where the people who run them...
