When you are trying pull off a casino heist, advertising on Craigslist probably isn't the best way to round up a crew. A man who said a Craigslist ad led him to take part in an attempt to steal high-stakes chips from a Vegas Strip casino amid a cloud of pepper spray is facing an evidence hearing in June. Comments

The TSA’s Freudian Craigslist Slip Either someone just attempted the subtlest of jabs at our nation's force of uncomfortably invasive rent-a-cops or the recruiters at the Transportation Security Administration need to invest in a better thesaurus. A job posting on the Ann Arbor, Michigan Craigslist invites would-be screeners to "[b]e part of a imperious security team protecting airports and skies as you proudly establish your future." Imperious, indeed. The Dictionary.com definition of imperious is "domineering in a haughty manner; dictatorial; overbearing." The definition from Google is even better, describing it as "assuming authority without justification." If it was a joke...

A new study from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism highlights an alarming trend among newspapers hoping to carve out a modicum of profitability through digital ad revenues: with very few exceptions, news organizations are failing to cash in on a lucrative form of online advertising. While it's long been held that utilizing consumer data to match advertisers with targeted consumers is "the strategy that many experts consider key to the future of digital revenue," the Pew study reveals, "With only a handful of exceptions, the ads on news sites tend not to be targeted based on...

Congressional support for controversial online piracy legislation eroded dramatically on Wednesday in the face of an unprecedented online protest supported by tech titans such as Google, Wikipedia and Facebook. Several key senators withdrew their support from the Senate's Protect IP Act (PIPA), including Tea Party favorite Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), an elected member of his party's leadership. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who leads the Senate GOP's campaign team, said the legislation should be put on hold, while Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a sponsor and the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, retreated from the...

I was unintelligent and posted an item on Craig's List for an amount that I thought it might move. I get a bite immediately and the guy haggles further to get me to include the shipping. My wife then hears what I've done and looks up on the internet a similar item listed for oh, say, 35 times more. How obligated am I to go through with the deal? The guy knows the true value of this item, where I did not. Now that I do, is it too late to renegotiate or am I obligated to receive his money...

Listings websites "really needs to clean up its act," sez Hizzoner The notorious “gun show loophole” that gives criminals and maniacs easy access to firearms has gone online. Undercover investigators for the city found thousands of guns - including one just like the 9mm Ruger that killed Officer Peter Figoski on Monday - being sold online by private peddlers who don’t have to perform background checks on buyers. Not only did investigators find it a breeze to buy pistols and assault rifles with no questions asked, but 77 of 125 sellers in 14 states agreed to complete the sale even...

The Occupy Movement has given us reporters plenty of fodder for good stories -- some informative and others entertaining. And while it appears Occupy SF has ceased to exist as a camp since police raided the encampment on Wednesday, there are still plenty of amusing stories to tell. For instance, this San Francisco guy is desperate to reoccupy the Financial District, which is why he is looking for someone to help him set up his tent -- and occupy it with him. So he did what any normal searching San Franciscan would do: He posted an ad on Craigslist. Although...

A body discovered by authorities Friday morning in Akron may be that of a missing Jackson Township man. The body of a man was found in a shallow grave behind Rolling Acres Mall, said FBI Special Agent Vicki Anderson. She said the identity of the man has not yet been confirmed. An ambulance carrying the body left the scene around 1:40 p.m. to the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators are working at a wooded area on the north side of the mall, north of Harlem Street. “We had information to go looking there,” Anderson said. Anderson declined to say...

Authorities in Ohio have implicated a high school junior in the death of a Florida man whose body was found in a shallow grave after he responded to a bogus Craigslist ad for a job on a cattle farm. The Florida man's death came to light after police were contacted Nov. 6 by a South Carolina man who answered the same fake ad. The man told police that he had been shot, but escaped by running away through the woods, according to Noble County Sheriff Stephen Hannum. The crimes occurred in a remote area outside Caldwell in southeastern Ohio, about...

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- Police said a man who told Channel 2 Action News that he was a robbery victim is actually the robber. DeKalb County police arrested Mahad Said and charged him with robbery one day after Said claimed a gunman robbed him. The real victim, Hashim Fannin, told Channel 2's Tom Jones that Said is one dumb criminal. "Since he went out and made this report, and went on television and all of that, that made it pretty easy to track him down," Fannin said. Said had said that a man he met on Craigslist tried to rob...

One of the latest four sets of remains found on a Long Island beach linked to the Craigslist Ripper belongs to a baby or child - and not a grown woman, it was revealed today. The remains were found last week among four sets of bodies several miles away from where the bodies of four prostitutes were located in December. But the victim may not be related to the other New York murders as a young person’s body ‘would not fit a serial killer’s pattern’, according to law enforcement sources.

America’s self-described toughest sheriff has issued a warning to the CEO of Craigslist saying the popular Internet website is providing a “mechanism to facilitate criminal activity.” Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s warning to Jim Buckmaster follows the arrest last month in Arizona by Maricopa County Sheriff's Office detectives of two men — one a middle school teacher and the other a handyman — on charges of conspiracy to commit bestiality. Sheriff Arpaio said an undercover investigation by his office began after detectives became aware that persons in the Phoenix area were using Craigslist to engage in illegal acts with animals. Detectives set...

Among those are the victims of the so-called "Craigslist serial killer" that has recently been targeting prostitutes on Long Island, N.Y. AN ANGEL IN THE POST OFFICE Date: 2007-11-23, 10:55PM MST This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. NPR will be one of the dominant forces in media in ten years because their membership-based funding model is finely tuned to the habits of millennial news consumers. That's the prophecy of Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and a new media philosopher. "Only very recently have I been thinking about the successful news organizations, he said, responding to a question from James Fallows at the Washington Ideas Forum. "I have a feeling that membership models and philanthrophy models will be stronger than advertising-supported models, people will be willing to pay for news they can trust." And trust, he said, "is...

In these tough economic times, many people are looking for a career change. Having been canned from jobs they’d previously found tedious and unfulfilling, they hunger for new challenges in different fields. If you’re one of those people, maybe you should consider a career in international espionage and counterterrorism! But how can I find a job in a field like that, you ask. I don’t have any military or CIA experience! How can I, an average Joe, even find out about jobs in the competitive, one might even say cutthroat, field of covert operations? Well, average Joe, these are the...

Ruth Marcus of The Washington Post accuses Sarah Palin of offending homosexuals when she remarked that the author of a Vanity Fair hatchet job about her was “impotent and limp and gutless.” Marcus wrote, “The Vanity Fair writer, Michael Joseph Gross, is gay, which makes matters worse—conjuring the stereotype of ‘limp-wristed.’ But whatever the sexual orientation of the offending reporter, Palin should not have been questioning his manhood.” Palin had every right to question his manhood, since he is not a man in the traditional sense and wrote a cowardly piece. But her remarks were probably directed at his “journalism,”...

CHICAGO (CBS) ― Craigslist appears to have surrendered in a legal fight over erotic ads posted on its website, shutting down its adult services section Saturday and replacing it with a black bar that simply says "censored." The move comes just over a week after a group of state attorneys general said there weren't enough protections against blocking potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution. It's not clear if the closure is permanent, and it appears to only affect ads in the United States. The listings came under new scrutiny after the jailhouse suicide last month of a former medical student who...

Starting with an old cell phone a friend gave him, 17-year-old Steven Ortiz of Glendora, CA, used Craigslist to trade up 14 times over two years and eventually end up with a Porsche Boxster. Here's how he did it. Although Oritz's story isn't the first time we've seen Craigslist-swapping writ large, it's the first one we've seen that doesn't include any outside help. You may remember Kyle MacDonald, who famously created a website to document his attempt to trade one red paperclip for a house. It worked. But MacDonald also had a built-in fanbase and publicity from his website. Ortiz,...

Sgt. Thomas Bingham, the police spokesman, said a man brought the left leg in after it apparently washed ashore, also posting the missing limb on jacksonville.craigslist.org. "There are no markings on it except for a Willie Nelson sticker," Bingham said. "It's kind of hard to forget." The sergeant said the prosthetic leg has a distinctive coloration and markings, so whoever lost it should be able to identify it if they come to the department at 101 S. Penman Road. The owner can also call the police department property room at (904) 247-6196 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.
