So I doubt that, if I had lived in Bolton, I would have gone within a quarter mile of “The Flying Shuttle”, described by the Daily Mail as probably the “toughest pub” in Britain. It appeared to be open all the time, in defiance of the licensing laws, not because the landlord held an open house but simply because the bar staff were too frightened to call time. In the end it took thirteen police officers to close it down and even then there was a mini riot.

On February 26, after some kind of altercation between a young stranger and a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, the stranger was shot and killed. Every American with a television, radio, or computer now knows the names of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. On April 11, while sleeping in their home on Chicago’s South Calumet Avenue, Tonisha Allen and her one-year-old daughter Jaliyah were shot – in bed – by bullets that came through the wall from outside. Most of us have heard about how the media won't report on black-on-white crime. We also may know that authorities sometimes sweep it under the rug due to political pressure, usually with a wink and a nod. But not so in rural Alabama, where the police actually told a white crime victim that they "don't mess" with a local black motorcycle gang. The tragic event that led to this shocking admission occurred on March 28, as truck driver Nick Stokes and neighbor Johnathan Cooper were heading out of Birmingham hauling a portable cabin. Stand-your-ground (SYG) measures, which have attracted increasing scrutiny since the fatal shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin by a neighbourhood watch volunteer in Florida, allow citizens to use deadly force when they believe their life is in danger, without requiring them to retreat or try to escape the threat...

Is there any interest in discovering the facts about the killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman? Facts, after all, can undermine ideology. They have the power to dispel fantasy. They can put the brakes on error. They lead, sometimes, to logical conclusions. All of which means, in this particular case, that when the facts come out, they might well undermine “the cause.” We simply don’t know all of the facts yet. (RALEIGH) – Some state legislators point to a case in Scotland County that cost a businessman thousands of dollars and affected his firm’s unemployment credit rating as a prime example of why the penalty for unemployment fraud should be increased from a misdemeanor to a felony. In 2011 Gerri Clark, 41, was charged with over 90 counts of unemployment fraud dating back to 2009. Under state law, she could only be charged with a misdemeanor; she pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor on July 13, 2011 in a Scotland County court.

Federal authorities are struggling to crack down on what they describe as a widespread scheme that has already likely defrauded the Internal Revenue Service of billions of dollars using the stolen identities of Puerto Rican citizens. The perpetrators of the scheme, authorities say, swipe the Social Security numbers of Puerto Rican citizens, who don't have to pay federal income tax—and are less likely to be on the IRS radar—and use their information to file fake returns. In some cases, they enlist U.S. mail carriers to intercept the refund checks that are disbursed. The plot, which includes participants from around the...

One of the best kept secrets among incarcerated people who are incarcerated is that they have the right to vote if they are pre-trialed or sentenced for a misdemeanor. Once inmates are classified and found eligible to vote, they should be given the opportunity to register. But as advocates for voting rights report these rights are suppressed by the lack of knowledge. With primaries in progress and a Presidential election just months away many voting rights advocates believe if the justice system is not challenged many eligible voters will be left out of the process. “The 700,000 eligible inmates in...

We’ve featured massive brawls before, either at late-night restaurants or even on the streets. And there are many videos we decide not to feature. This video almost fell into the latter category, until we heard what one male bystander started encouraging one of the women featured in the video to do. These videos hit the internet last week, but have just started to garner more attention. It shows two women (the video calls them “Bootsie” and “China”), allegedly in Atlanta, in an all-out brawl that spans several minutes and even spills over into a parking lot, with one woman smashing...

John Oliver Hill Jr., 48, who lives across the street, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in their deaths and is being held without bond in the Hoke County jail. This is a very clear and complete tape of Zimmerman's 911 call. Most important is Zimmerman's REPEATED assertions, after he had gotten out of his car to see where Martin was going, that Martin had disappeared from sight. "He ran." "I don't know where he's at." And the dispatcher asks for Zimmerman's home address, to which he responds in a whisper: "(house number)..OH CRAP, I DON'T WANT TO SAY IT OUT LOUD. I DON'T KNOW WHERE HE'S AT." He describes the neighborhood for cops who were on the way and tells him he will meet them at his car or...

"His Republican opponents have jumped all over him because they do want to play politics with this issue. The President spoke from his heart on this, it was trying to emphasize with some parents who had just lost a child. By any measure, this was a tragedy and we need to let the investigation take its course," Stephanie Cutter, Obama's Deputy Campaign Manager, said on MSNBC today. "People have to stop politicizing it," she added. "It's no surprise that some of our Republican opponents are trying to make an issue with this. But the President spoke from the heart and...
