No bail for suspect in killings of man, 2 sons

SAN FRANCISCO -- The man charged with murdering a San Francisco father and two sons during a traffic incident appeared in court today and listened quietly as he was ordered held without bail. --snip-- He appeared shackled at the waist in a jail jumpsuit, a large tattoo of the Salvadoran national crest visible on the back of his closely shaved head. ... --snip-- The three murder counts carry special circumstances of multiple murder and murder as part of a street gang, which both carry the potential of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.
U.S. still in talks to delay Mexicans' executions, lawyers say

The Bush administration's "extraordinary" effort to comply with an international court order granting new hearings for 51 Mexican nationals on death row has been stymied by federal laws, U.S. State Department lawyers said Friday. "The issue of capital punishment arouses deep feelings," said State Department legal adviser John B. Bellinger III, according to transcripts filed with the court. "But this is not about the death penalty." Bellinger told the International Court of Justice -- the principal judicial organ of the United Nations -- that while the administration understands its obligation to abide by the court's rulings, current U.S. law does...

Washington-area police report wave of burglaries, cite illegal immigrants

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - A wave of burglaries is spreading across the Washington area, and police say illegal immigrants, hit by police crackdowns and the drop in new construction, are likely playing a key role. “The immigrant community is at a tipping point,” said Montgomery County police community liaison Officer Luis Hurtado. “The poor economy is pushing more immigrants to turn to crime.” In the first five months of this year, burglaries climbed 10 to 20 percent in many jurisdictions. The District of Columbia had the greatest increase, jumping 20 percent from 1,370 in the first five months of 2007...

Feds deport more felons from Georgia prisons.

The Georgia Department of Corrections transferred 433 felons to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings in 2007, the most recent year for which state and federal data are available. That's more than twice as many as the 189 handed over to the agency in 2002. At least three child molesters who were illegal immigrants had served time in Georgia prisons but escaped the attention of federal authorities. All three were released back into the community. Two or three times a week, air transports arrive at the Columbus airport to pick up detainees and take them to Mexico or...

American Renaissance Conference (Fred Reed on Immigration)

This week, disordered thoughts. I’m not sure what other kind might be applicable in today’s world. I just got back from Washington, where I addressed the American Renaissance conference. I hate airplanes. They have the charm of Greyhound buses without the comfort. AmRen, as we say, had invited me to talk about Mexico as it appears from the inside. The organization was alleged to be a vicious racist organization. The more easily frightened of my associates in the crime of journalism tried to warn me off. They told me that my mere presence at the conference would destroy my reputation....

U.S. may punish nations that refuse their ex-cons

The United States is facing a major obstacle in its efforts to deport thousands of illegal immigrants, including many convicted felons: Their home countries don't want them back. This does not sit well with Sen. Arlen Specter, a veteran Republican lawmaker and ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Specter was stunned at the situation after touring several prisons in his home state of Pennsylvania, where taxpayer dollars are paying to house foreigners who have served their sentences but could not be deported. In response, he drafted legislation that would punish countries that refuse to take back illegal immigrants. "There...

Study: Illegal worker crackdown would cost employers $1B

WASHINGTON - The government's plan to crack down on illegal workers could cost employers more than $1 billion a year and legal workers billions in lost wages, a study commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce says. Those costs are enough to trigger a federal law that would require the Homeland Security Department to analyze more thoroughly the effect of its proposal, said Richard Belzer, a consultant hired by the chamber to do the study. It was made available to The Associated Press on Thursday. The department's proposed "no match" rule would require employers to fire workers who can't resolve...

Shaw Shooting Suspect May Be Illegal Immigrant

LOS ANGELES Immigration officials say the suspected Los Angeles street gang member charged in the shooting death of a high school football star may have been in the country illegally. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Virginia Kice said Saturday her agency has filed an immigration hold against 19-year-old Pedro Espinoza. The hold means Espinoza will be transferred into her agency's custody for possible deportation when he leaves local custody. Espinoza was released from jail in an assault case the day before the March 2 killing of 17-year-old Jamiel Shaw Junior. Kice did not know if there was a hold...

Katrina Nation

When Woodrow Wilson went to Congress to ask for a declaration of war in 1917, the U.S. Army was ranked 17th in the world, behind Portugal. On Armistice Day, 19 months later, there were 2 million doughboys in France, where they had helped to break the back of Gen. Ludendorff's theretofore invincible army in its final offensive, and 2 million more in the United States ready to march on Berlin. No other nation could have done that. After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, FDR demanded that a disarmed America "build 50,000 planes" -- a seemingly impossible number, but one...

Mexican president decries anti-immigrant perceptions in US, says migrants help economy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Monday decried anti-immigrant perceptions in the United States and argued that Mexican immigrants complement American workers. On his first trip to the U.S. as Mexico's president, Calderon said he is working to combat anti-Americanism in Mexico and to improve job prospects there to reduce migration. He said he hopes that Americans resist anti-Mexican sentiments. "The worst thing that happened in this country is this anti-Mexican or anti-immigrant perception of people.
Amnesty Will Cost US Taxpayers some $2.6 Trillion (What John McCain Supports)

He supported amnesty in 2003 by name, proposed it in 2006 and 2007 without calling it amnesty, and says that anyone who says that he ever supported amnesty is a liar. He has insulted Americans who advocate border security and has cursed at the thought of building a border fence. The presence of Juan Hernandez in the background of the McCain campaign tells us that John McCain is as weak on border security now as he ever was.
