Bill Connelly December 1, 2016 This might be Nick Saban’s best team ever. But some of college football’s best teams ever have dropped games before. Is it possible for an Alabama team to be underrated? Have we just gotten bored with talking about Nick Saban's Tide? Most of the talk regarding college football's Championship Weekend has centered around the fun matchups in Penn State-Wisconsin, whether Colorado or Virginia Tech has a shot at an upset, or what the Playoff committee might do about Michigan. But we haven't had much to say about Bama, defending national champion and winner of four...

The picture, taken outside the University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, shows a Crimson Tide fan holding a sign directed at opponents University of Mississippi. “Ole Miss Girls Are Easier Than Their Out-Of-Conference Schedule,” reads the sign, a reference to the first two games on the Rebels’ schedule. They scored 76 and 73 points in those games. The image, posted on the official College GameDay social media accounts, included the caption “Just no chill,” or not cool. Anchor Rece Davis and analyst Kirk Herbstreit rebuked the image as it flashed on the screen during the broadcast among other fan...

Do you enjoy hearing the song "Dixieland Delight" sung by a packed Bryant-Denny Stadium during Alabama football games? Well, it appears we’ve heard it for the last time – at least for now. The singing of "Dixieland Delight" has been a Crimson Tide tradition for years, but the school has decided to put a stop to the song because Bama fans turn it into a vulgar taunt of the opponent. An email was recently sent around Alabama’s marketing folks requesting the song be removed from all athletic events until the university’s AD decides otherwise.

Well, here it is, the final game of the 2009 college football season. For much of the bowl season, I've had to work, get my car fixed, and Google search any insignificant question and computer problem my grandparents call me about. (You would think with their age and guile they'd have the answers to various things readily available. You would think). So needless to say, this has kept me from my assigned college football commenting duties. For that I apologize, but tonight I will get the festivities going. So without further ado... Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Every good Southerner knows there are only two religions in Alabama – football and football. This week, a new maxim emerged: When it comes to the state judicial system, there’s a lot of crimson hiding beneath those billowing black robes. Circuit Judge Dan King announced Wednesday he would grant a delay in the civil suit Traywick v. Energen Corporation, which was scheduled for trial Jan. 4 in Bessemer, Ala., a suburb of Birmingham. The reason? Energen’s defense attorneys want to attend the showdown between the University of Alabama and University of Texas at Austin, scheduled for Jan....

Jack Mildren died earlier this year and a number of scenes from the Okie 71 season have been available on youtube. Just once in my life have I seen a situation in which an amateur version of a sport outgrew the pro version: the wishbone era of college football. The contrast with pro-style football is stark; instead of the offense being outnumbered 11-10 on running plays (the quarterback isn't contributing anything but a turkey imitation), if it's done right the DEFENSE is effectively being outnumbered something like 12 or 13 - 11. Note that when Mildren went to throw the...

Well, I searched, and found nothing about Alabama's gutty win over LSU last night, so here it is, 27-21. So, Roll Tide. On a personal note, while I don't know Rashad Johnson, and have never even met him, I work with his father who is a foreman at the company at which I am employed. He's proud as a peacock, of course, and my bet is that once Rashad signs that NFL contract, he will retire and follow his son aound to every game.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A judge threw out the $5 million verdict an Alabama football fan won in his lawsuit accusing the NCAA of slander, ruling in a decision made public Wednesday that jurors were wrongly swayed by prejudice against the sanctioning organization. Circuit Judge William Gordon granted the NCAA’s request for a new trial in a lawsuit filed by timber dealer Ray Keller of Stevenson, but he did not set a date. Gordon said in a 13-page opinion that the multimillion-dollar verdict wasn’t supported by evidence, and he ruled the award “is the result of passion or prejudice.” He also...

The Tide came rolling in on National Signing Day. After an impressive flurry of commitments in the past 48 hours, and thanks to a solid recruiting foundation that was laid in the spring and summer, Alabama has been crowned by as the recruiting national champions for the class of 2008. The Crimson Tide finished with an amazing run in Nick Saban's second recruiting class in Tuscaloosa. Saban and his staff landed three five-star players and 18 four-star recruits, giving them enough of a push to edge Notre Dame and SEC rival Florida. As of 3 p.m. EST, the Tide...

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - With large swaths of the Gulf Coast still in ruins from Hurricane Katrina, rich federal tax breaks designed to spur rebuilding are flowing hundreds of miles inland to investors who are buying up luxury condos near the University of Alabama's football stadium. Alabama fired coach Mike Shula less than a year after the Crimson Tide finished a 10-2 season, according to a newspaper report. Shula told his assistant coaches late Sunday night that Alabama athletic director Mal Moore had dismissed him, The Tuscaloosa News reported on its Web site. An official announcement is expected Monday. Reached at home, Moore declined comment Monday morning but said he would hold a news conference later in the day. TUSCALOOSA, Ala., Nov. 7 — In the solemn cathedral of college football devotion and instruction that is the Paul W. Bryant Museum here, a large painting dominates the main chamber. It is called “The Sack,” and it shows an encounter between a Notre Dame quarterback and a human locomotive in crimson and white. “I’ve never been hit like that before,” the quarterback, Steve Beuerlein, said after his near-lethal sack by Cornelius Bennett in 1986, in the University of Alabama’s first victory ever over his team. Daniel A. Moore, who painted “The Sack” and scores of other renditions of signal moments...

WASHINGTON, April 17 — Frustrated with the performance of the American Red Cross, Alabama's governor has asked Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff for the federal aid necessary to let the state assume primary responsibility for operating its own emergency shelters in disasters. The move comes after months of criticism of the Red Cross, inspired by what even the organization's own leaders acknowledge was its inadequate response to Hurricane Katrina last year.

He was hoping perhaps to obtain an autographed picture for his son, Fred Jr., who was about to celebrate his 16th birthday.
