Florida’s top Congressional Democrats broke with President Barack Obama on Tuesday over his administration’s decision to issue Fidel Castro’s niece a visa to attend a conference this week in San Francisco. The opposition of Sen. Bill Nelson and Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz came just hours after Republicans had blasted away at the visa decision —while failing to acknowledge that Republican President George W. Bush’s administration had allowed Mariela Castro to visit the United States three times a decade ago.

  • Reds' Chapman sued for $18M over Cuban conviction

MIAMI -- A major league pitcher who defected from Cuba is being sued for $18 million by a Cuban-American man imprisoned on the communist island. The lawsuit was filed recently in Miami federal court against Aroldis Chapman, a left-handed pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. The lawsuit claims Chapman falsely accused Danilo Curbelo Garcia of involvement in human trafficking, leading to his 2008 arrest and conviction in Cuba. Curbelo Garcia is serving a 10-year sentence. Chapman defected in 2009 in the Netherlands and was signed a year later by the Reds to a six-year, $30.25 million contract. The lawsuit claims Chapman...

Fear! and being the first man I want to post a comment on this. FEAR! It is the life draining emotion. It is what keeps you from accomplishing and doing and starting. It is excessively protectful. It is how animals think...the kind of animals that get eaten. Fear is destructive in that it prevents you from doing anything at all other than running away or hunkering in a fetal "down and cover". Fear thrives on pessimism and complaining. The man that wakes every morning, walks outside and smiles at the bright sun and blue sky and cinches down the ruck,...

An exploratory oil well off the northern coast of Cuba has proved a failure and will be capped and abandoned. “Mapping an (offshore) oil field is like trying to draw a map of a city when all you have is one in 10 lampposts working and a bit of a fog,’’ Rix said by phone from Madrid. “It’s very hard to do, so I can’t draw any conclusions from one well about the whole rest of it.’’ Nor does the failed well mean that the rest of Cuba’s offshore exploratory area, which has been estimated to hold 5 billion to...

Cuba could pass legislation allowing same-sex marriage later this year, according to the daughter of President Raúl Castro. Mariela Castro, the country’s premier sexologist, made the remarks one day after US President Barack Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage, but said Cuba still needs to be "more revolutionary" in its treatment of gays. Ms. Castro said she "has the hope that this year" parliament will pass legislation to legalize gay marriage in Cuba, although the bill under debate by lawmakers here "sad to say is not everything that we would have hoped for." Castro looked to another of its neighbors, Argentina,...

Forget the fact that Cuba is a one-party totalitarian state where leadership is entirely dependent on how closely related one is to a certain Fidel Castro rather than any electoral process. The good news is that "Cuba may be the most feminist country in Latin America." That laughable premise has been published by New York Times blogger Luisita Lopez Torregrosa. Of course, that revelation would be news to the best known female group in Cuba, the Ladies In White (photo) who have been oppressed by the Communist regime and their thugs. Ms Torregrosa bases much of her analysis on the...

Maybe Miami is changing, maturing, growing. Maybe Miami is moving on. Maybe the city at large and especially its Cuban population are increasingly able to show the devil 90 miles south that he holds less and less sway over our psyche — and if you don’t believe it you should have been around Marlins Park on Tuesday evening. The night was not about politics and protests, after all. Blessedly it was all about baseball, for a change — and all cheers when Hanley Ramirez’s eighth-inning, three-run blast animated that freaky home run sculpture and beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2.

"They fought like tigers," writes the CIA officer who helped train the Cubans who splashed ashore at the Bay of Pigs 51 years ago today. "But their fight was doomed before the first man hit the beach." That CIA man, Grayston Lynch, knew something about fighting - and about long odds. He carried scars from Omaha Beach, The Battle of the Bulge and Korea's Heartbreak Ridge. But in those battles Lynch and his band of brothers counted on the support of their Commander in Chief. At the Bay of Pigs, Grayston Lynch (an American) and his band of brothers (Cubans)...

CARTAGENA, Colombia (Reuters) - Unprecedented Latin American opposition to U.S. sanctions on Cuba left President Barack Obama isolated at a summit on Sunday and illustrated Washington's declining influence in a region being aggressively courted by China. Unlike the rock-star status he enjoyed at the 2009 Summit of the Americas after taking office, Obama has had a bruising time at the two-day meeting in Colombia of some 30 heads of state. For the first time, conservative-led U.S. allies like Mexico and Colombia are throwing their weight behind the traditional demand of leftist governments that Cuba be invited to the next Summit...

Miami’s Cuban American Bar Association on Wednesday dropped out as a sponsor of Lawyer Appreciation Night at the Marlins ballpark next week. The Miami-based legal group said it can’t support the event after Marlins Manager Ozzie Guillen declared he had “respect” for Fidel Castro’s ability to remain alive and in power. The comments sparked a furor throughout Miami’s Cuban-American community, and led to an apology by Guillen and the team suspending him for five games. “CABA will not support any organization whose public spokesman expresses sympathy for that regime,’’ the group’s statement read. The April 17 event consists mainly of...

CINCINNATI -- Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen apologized Saturday for telling a magazine he loves Fidel Castro, two days after saying he gets drunk at the hotel bar after every game and has been doing so "for 25, 28 years. It doesn't change." Guillen told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects him for staying in power so long. When Guillen read his comments Friday, he said he felt sick because he knew how people would react. The Castro comment also prompted the team to issue a statement denouncing the Cuban dictator. "There is nothing to respect about Fidel Castro....

At least 43 Cuban dissidents have been arrested in areas near where Pope Benedict XVI visited last week, dissidents said Tuesday, as the United States urged their immediate release. "We have been able to confirm that 43 opposition members have been detained -- 10 women and 33 men -- in a crackdown on Monday in the Santiago de Cuba area. All remain under arrest," said Elizardo Sanchez, head of the outlawed but tolerated Cuban Human Rights and National Reconciliation Commission.

Cuba has honored an appeal by Pope Benedict XVI and declared next week's Good Friday a holiday for the first time since the early days following the island's 1959 Revolution, though a decision on whether the move will be permanent will have to wait. The Communist government said in a communique Saturday that the decision was made in light of the success of Benedict's "transcendental visit" to the country, which wrapped up Wednesday. It said the Council of Ministers, Cuba's supreme governing body, will decide later whether to make the holiday permanent. Benedict's appeal was reminiscent of his predecessor John...
