The meeting was prompted most recently by "wildings" terrorizing San Leandro. Authorities say that over the last few months, large groups of teenagers - as many as 100 - have been attacking, scaring and robbing victims at malls and at near BART stations. On Friday, the police department put out a flyer about this "new crime trend" involving "unruly young adults."

A couple of years ago, I wrote a piece about the fading sentimental connection of today’s generations with World War II, the defining event of the 20th century. There is some oddity in living through the transition: in seeing the soldiers whom FDR called “our sons” become our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, and then the ghosts of history commemorated on tombstones. One of the most important transitions is the fading of the grand narrative by which we defined and guided our nation for so many decades. The hindsight of history has its rewards. But it has its drawbacks as well, as...

The politics of this nation is starting to tear apart the tight brotherhood of the Marine Corps. Sergeant Major Paul Archie was arrested for third-degree assault and battery after an altercation with former Parris Island Drill Instructor Ethan Arguello. Arguello’s campaign cover from his time was taken by Archie, while the cop stood there on her radio. The Smokey Bear has since been returned and Archie turned himself in. The altercation came because Arguello is standing outside MCRD Parris Island protesting over the trade of Bowe Bergdahl to the Taliban for money and five terrorists who will kill Americans again.

A full 50 percent say gay marriage is protected by the Constitution’s Equal Protection clause, an argument repeated by judge after judge in a string of federal rulings against state bans since a pivotal Supreme Court decision last summer. Some 43 percent do not believe gay marriage enjoys constitutional protection. Support for gay marriage overall — regardless of views on whether it is constitutionally protected — enjoys broader support, with 56 percent saying they back the right for same-sex couples to marry and 38 percent opposing it. In states that ban same-sex marriage, opinions tilt narrowly in support, 50 percent...

In a 2010 speech, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's father, Robert Bergdahl, reportedly said, "The man who we believe holds Bowe grew up on the lap of his mother learning the Koran. He is a powerful man. We pray for him. He recently lost a son to a CIA missile drone strike. The fact that he didn't kill Bowe right then is incredible. So we pray for him." The statement would coincide with a time period during which there were US drone strikes in and around that region. The comments were made during an Idaho Republican Party fundraiser....

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission has ordered a suburban Denver baker named Jack Phillips to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples, finding that his religious objections do not supersede the state's anti-discrimination statutes. Because if the Constitution should be subordinate to anything, it's the local thought police, hurt feelings, and nuptial pastries. Raju Jaram, one of the reprehensible unelected commissioners—whose contact information is nowhere to be found on Colorado's government site—apparently had this to say about the case: "I can believe anything I want, but if I'm going to do business here, I'd ought to not discriminate against people." No,...

  • Springfield (MA) violence: 'Don't blame the police when Pookie gets shot…,' says Rev. Swan

    06/06/2014 4:33:23 PM PDT · by matt04 · 38 replies
Blame for the recent violence that's swept through Springfield lies in the hands of the young men committing the crimes – and those who tacitly abet them – not the law enforcement officials and religious leaders trying to keep the peace, according to the Rev. Talbert W. Swan II, president of the Greater Springfield NAACP and pastor of Spring of Hope Church. "Don't blame the police, you know, when Pookie gets shot and you knew the kind of life Pookie was living, and you knew the path that Pookie was on and you never addressed it with Pookie," Swan said...

Frustrated with rising prices? Check. Keep getting hit with more fees and charges? Check. You're paying for more channels than you'd ever want to watch? Check. These are just a handful of the most common complaints consumers have when it comes to grappling with cable companies. And it's not just anecdotal: A survey of subscribers on the nation's biggest cable providers has found that more than half of Americans would abandon their cable provider if they felt they could. Cable rage is real, and here's the data to prove it. Fifty-three percent of respondents to a recent survey said they'd...
  • John Podesta: EPA carbon rule will survive next president

    Politico ^ | June 6, 2014 | By DARREN GOODE
White House counselor John Podesta is “fairly confident” that proposed EPA greenhouse gas restrictions can survive scrutiny under the next president — and that Democrats can campaign on the climate change issue in races this year. “If you’re a climate denier trying to run nationally, I think you’re going to have a very hard road to go getting elected president of the United States,” he said. “There’s no doubt there’s some states where this is an issue that presents a different set of political challenges, particularly coal-producing states,” he said. “And there’s no doubt that the polluters have come after...

The Los Angeles Unified School District wants to disprove the old saying that there's no free lunch. The district on Thursday said it will serve free lunches through summer to children and the disabled at 317 school campuses along with 105 parks and recreation centers. District Director of Food Services David Binkle says he expects the program to dish out 4.5 million meals.

For 5 years the correlation between the expansion of the Federal Reserve's balance sheet and the growth of the S&P 500 has risen dramatically. Since QE3 was unveiled, the correlation is converging on 1 which of course is just happy coincidence and nothing to do with the free and easy flow of liquidity that month after month of Fed largesse has created. The problem is we now know that the hurdles to a Fed un-Taper are very high and so we can extrapolate the end-point for the Fed's balance sheet and where stocks would trade at that point. The...

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority sent out books to every junior in the state, outlining what they need to know while preparing for college.  There's only one small problem: the word "Kentucky" is misspelled on the spine of the book. The photos at right were provided by viewer Liz Palmer.  We talked with Erin Klarer with KHEAA. She tells us several schools, parents, and even state officials have let them know about the mistake, but to reprint and redistribute them would cost about $70,000, so they opted to just - in her words - "deal with the egg on...

But the celebration over one of the school's teams was just a ruse. That soon became apparent when Principal Chris Glass grabbed the microphone. "Somebody has made a huge mess again in this gymnasium," Glass told the gathered students and faculty. "Oh no. What to do?" Spaulding was called in to the gym and cleaned up in a much different way — students presented him with a check for $1,900, money that they had begun collecting earlier in the year. The funds will be used to fly his family to Italy to visit his son Jacob, who is stationed there...
