Media Response to Anita Li, from the Toronto Star Since you took the time to email us with your requests like we asked, I’ll take the time to give you an honest follow-up response. You’ll have to forgive me for doing so publicly though; again I want to be sure my words are portrayed the way I actually say them, not cut together to make entirely different points. Your questions were: Q: Why did you decide to reprimand your daughter over a public medium like YouTube? A: Well, I actually just had to load the video file itself on YouTube...

FULLTITLE: Why fathers are faithful: Becoming a dad causes a testosterone drop that makes men less likely to stray They say having a family changes a man for ever. But it may not just be a sense of duty that drives new dads to swap evenings in the pub for quiet nights at home. Scientists have discovered fatherhood can halve testosterone levels – and stop men from straying. A study has found that when men become fathers, their bodies suppress production of the sex hormone, making them more interested in parenting than mating. American researchers studied more than 600 men...

The Right Choice My 16-year-old brother, Ryan, was out late with friends one night. Suddenly he realized it was Father’s Day and he had neglected to buy a card for our dad. After much searching, Ryan located an open store, but was disappointed to find only two cards left on a picked-over rack. Selecting one, he brought it home and, somewhat sheepishly, presented it to our father.Upon opening it, Dad read this message: “You’ve been like a father to me.” He looked at Ryan, puzzled.“Well, Dad,” Ryan tried to explain, “it was either that or the card that said,...

Rain Price will never forget the first day of his sophomore year of high school. On the bus, packed with classmates from his suburban Utah school, Rain peered out the window, mortified. "The school bus for the first time ever came down our street this year," explains Rain’s dad, Dale, to Utah’s Daily Herald. "This was [my son’s] first year on the bus. My wife came running in the room and suggested we go wave at him to embarrass him.” And so began Dale’s hazing ritual that continued every day for the rest of his son's school year. The first...

No amount of family counseling is going to help here. A Washington State man had to be airlifted to the hospital after his daughter shot him with a hunting bow because he took away her cell phone, authorities said. When officers arrived at the house in Tahuya, Wash. - about 35 miles west of Seattle - the girl fled into the woods with the bow and 35 arrows. A SWAT team...

Pierce Brosnan admits that he might not have learned all he needed to know about math from the Christian Brothers in Ireland, but the teachers imparted one thing that has stayed with him to this day – his Catholic faith. In an interesting new interview with RTE.ie to promote his patronage of the new Irish dramatic art academy The Lir, which will debut this fall at Trinity College in Dublin, Brosnan credits the power of prayer with guiding him through life’s ups and downs. "(Prayer) helped me with the loss of my wife to cancer and with a child who...

-Best Protector: Bryan Mills (Taken) – Chances are you won’t recognize the name even if you’ve seen the good-but-forgettable 2008 action flick Taken. So why does Mills make the list? Because when faced with every father’s worst nightmare (his his 17-year-old daughter is kidnapped in Paris and forced in the sexual slave trade), Mills uses all his skills and knowledge (he’s a former CIA agent) to find her and bring her home. While the action is pure Hollywood, the message is universal: We dads will do anything in our power to protect our children. Honorable Mention: The Father (The Road)...

At times I have seen others asking for prayer for a loved one. Today I am asking for prayers for my Dad. At luuch yesterday, with my brother and sister in attendance, my Dad tells us that he has seen his urologist that morning and was told his PSA reading is 150. A year ago at his regular checkup it was 50. My Dad had prostate cancer about 14 years ago and because his PSA level was low opted for the seed treatment where they place radioactive pellets in the prostate to kill the cancer cells. This seemed to work...

Ever wondered why our early ancestors were able to have so many kids? Well, it was because most of them were apparently active fathers, claim researchers. Northwestern University researcher Lee T. Gettler suggests in a new anthropological model of human evolution that the fathers among our earliest human ancestors may have helped jumpstart human evolution by helping females out with their children. Lee believes that the same paternal investment pattern resembles the kind of hands-on parenting many dads still display. "Other men might have been highly involved with direct care, engaging in behaviors not unlike what involved fathers do today,"...

There is little question that in most families the mother is the central unifying person emblematic of unconditional love that can be tough love when necessary. Recent research, however, suggests that fathers are more important in the lives of children than had been previously understood. It is still unclear how much this reflects the fact that, although many single parents are successful in that challenging role, children raised in intact two-parent homes enjoy certain tangible advantages, or that fathers bring certain essential characteristics to family life. Some research indicates that fathers are more likely to engage in vigorous physical play,...

This Father’s Day sets up a special call to greatness for Catholic men, as it falls the day before the feasts of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher. The first was a model family man, the other a passionate pastor. Both died for the Catholic faith, demonstrating the devotion all Christian fathers must give their families (See Ephesians 5:25). Fathers of nuclear families and spiritual families can learn much from these two English martyrs. “St. Thomas More taught his children, by both word and action, that we’re all called to be God’s good servant first,” says Father Roger Landry, pastor...

Father’s Day 2009: “An End to Buffoonish Fathers” Ah, Father’s Day is upon us. I can’t think of a better time for dads and men to remember how to be dads and men. Flip on the tube any time during the day and you’ll see fathers portrayed as hapless buffoons – saved from themselves by their wives and all-knowing children. The real life of the modern dad isn’t much prettier. To be sure, the state of the American male is in a shambles – though I’m not fully sure how we got here. I remember the ‘60s. The women’s movement...

OMAHA, Neb. - Nine children were left at a hospital by their father late Wednesday under the state's new safe haven law, a move officials say illustrates the problems many feared when the rule went into effect. The father, who was not identified, left the children aged 1 to 17 at Creighton University Medical Center's emergency room. The law, which went into effect in July, allows caregivers to abandon children at any state-licensed hospital without fear of prosecution. It was initially intended to protect infants — like similar laws in other states — but was amended to include children and...
