Dallas Police Chief David Brown next week will honor the man who discovered the body of slain police officer J.D. Tippit and reported it just 45 minutes after President John F. DALLAS – FBI officials who arrested a Jordanian man plotting to blow up a Dallas skyscraper offer a different portrayal of the apologetic young man who spoke politely to the judge during his two day sentencing hearing. FBI officials told The Associated Press that 20-year-old Hosam Smadi believed he was committing an act on the scale of the September 11th attacks and would get away with it. Agent Tom Petrowski says Smadi "intended to die" for Osama bin Laden.

A federal judge today sentenced a Jordanian national who tried to blow up a downtown Dallas skyscraper to 24 years in prison, mostly rejecting defense claims that he was mentally ill and unduly influenced by law enforcement agents. Hosam "Sam" Smadi faced up to 30 years in prison under a plea agreement accepted by U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn. He will be deported to Jordan once he serves his time. MoneyGram International Inc. is moving its global headquarters to Dallas from St. Louis Park. The company’s executive staff will move to Dallas and there will be new hires there as well. MoneyGram plans to have about 75 employees in place in Dallas by March 2011 and 150 by 2012. Today the company has about 800 jobs in the Twin Cities, including 470 at the MoneyGram Tower in St. Louis Park and 330 at an operations center in Brooklyn Park.

With money tight, Dallas Area Rapid Transit executives want to convert area carpool lanes to paid toll lanes, and with board approval the agency could be operating the first so-called managed lanes in North Texas by 2012. DART manages 84 miles of carpool lanes, also known as high-occupancy lanes, on area highways.
