The strange story of what happened to dancing NOT LONG AGO, on a warm Thursday evening, scores of people were crowded onto one of those party boats that stays docked at a waterfront pier. And from a remarkable distance, you could feel the thump of music. Eventually, Justin Timberlake's irresistible rump-shaker "Sexy Back" came on, and while the song twittered and thwapped, an amazing thing happened: Nobody moved. A waiter, who could also feel the music, looked over at the docked people and shook his head. "It's a [darn] shame, that music going to waste like that." If it was...

France brings line dancing craze under state control They turn out in their hundreds in Stetsons and boots as hits such as the Crazy Foot Mambo and the Cowboy Strut echo around their village halls. They are drawn by a love of American culture - although definitely not American politics - and a passion for line dancing, which enables them to swing but avoid all human contact. Now country and western has become so big in France that the country's bureaucrats have decided to bring the craze under state control. The French administration has moved to create an official country...

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghanistan's lower house of Parliament passed a resolution Monday seeking to bar television programs from showing dancing and other practices deemed un-Islamic. The decision came just days after the private Tolo TV channel aired a dance number featuring men and women together on an Afghan film awards program. The Information and Culture Ministry condemned the scene, saying "dancing by men and women together was completely against the culture of the Afghan, Muslim society." The parliamentary resolution, drafted by a commission for cultural and religious affairs, said dancers should not be shown on television, and un-Islamic scenes should...

A North Texas school district is ramping up the fight against what they say is dirty dancing going on between students at school events. Administrators in Argyle asked parents to meet Sunday night to discuss the way students were dancing together at a recent school event. The superintendent showed parents a YouTube video of teens doing the same kind of dancing he says happened repeatedly at a school dance earlier in the month. Im not being old fashioned, Argyle School Superintendant Jason Cevanes said. These students are simulating sex to the point that in some cases it constitutes sexual assault....

Dance stars of the future should take note that roboticists are making great strides in making them redundant. The robot copies the moves of a human dance teacher Japanese researchers have created a dancing robot capable of imitating a routine at a moments notice, with no need for time-consuming and costly rehearsals. Shinichiro Nakaoka and colleagues at the University of Tokyo have overcome difficulties with programming robots to carry out complex leg movements without their losing stability. They used software allowing their robot HRP-2 to copy the moves of a human dance teacher through video motion capture technology. HRP-2 then...

Heather Mills thus-far successful stint on ABCs Dancing with Stars has convinced one former Heather-hater that America should apologize for making Paul McCartneys estranged wife the villain in their bitter divorce battle. Im ashamed that I had a judgment against her based on everything that you read in the newspapers, a caller identified as Pat told Ryan Seacrest who had the ex-Mrs. Beatle on his West Coast radio show yesterday. The caller continued to say hed love to apologize to her for how the former model and animal activist was wrongfully treated, moving Mills to tears, People maggie reported.

....Siloam Springs, Ark., is a town with about 60 churches for fewer than 14,000 people. It is not officially Christian, of course, but the sign at the city limits on Route 412 says, welcome to siloam springs, where jesus is lord. Its a town with Free Baptists, Free Evangelicals, Southern Baptists, Disciples of Christ, Assemblies of God, Reformed Christians, Nazarene Christians, Presbyterians, Methodists, Holiness Methodists and a couple dozen independent Bible churches so committed to Scripture alone that choosing a denomination is close to idolatry. Over the Oklahoma border, theres an Indian casino filled with one-armed bandits, and 30 miles...

Its hard to write this without sounding like a prig. But its just as hard to erase the images that planted the idea for this essay, so here goes. The scene is a middle school auditorium, where girls in teams of three or four are bopping to pop songs at a student talent show. Not bopping, actually, but doing elaborately choreographed re-creations of music videos, in tiny skirts or tight shorts, with bare bellies, rouged cheeks and glittery eyes. They writhe and strut, shake their bottoms, splay their legs, thrust their chests out and in and out again. Some straddle...

Tom DeLay, the House Majority Leader who was forced to resign earlier this year, has decided to pitch in his two cents about one of America's tightest races. No, not a political race. We're talking about the new season of "Dancing With the Stars." DeLay, a former Republican congressman from Texas, sent out a letter to his supporters urging them to watch -- and vote for -- country singer Sara Evans in the third season of the popular ABC show. "Sara Evans has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party and represents good American values in the media,"...

CAMP ISKANDARIYAH, Iraq The lucky soldiers live in air-conditioned "cans" surrounded by concrete blast walls. The less fortunate get hot, moldy tents. They drink rivers of Red Bull and Mountain Dew. On Sunday nights they might eat steak and crab legs. For entertainment, they can buy bootleg DVDs of The Dukes of Hazzard for only $3. Inside the gate, absent the occasional mortar attack, soldiers are relatively safe. But they never go "outside the wire" unless fully armed. Such is life in the American military's forward operating bases, which represent a new approach to war.

We can discuss all of the details surrounding the bad run up to the election, the mistakes with drafting the initiatives and the battles within the horseshoe itself...but time calls for me to be short and to the point: 1. I'm still placing some 'blame' squarely upon the conservatives of the Republican Party. The "Tombots", along with the 'continual vendetta crowd' (you know who you are) never embraced Arnold. Simple 'pride' wouldn't let go of the 'sour grapes' they held as the party went for the win in the recall election (BTW: I still believe it was the right thing...

Think of sexually evocative bumping and grinding to bass-heavy hip-hop tunes. Think of lap dancing, standing up. That's "freak dancing," a trend among high schoolers nationwide for more than a half-decade that Seattle Public Schools is now not only taking notice of but trying to stop. Steve Wilson, the Seattle district's chief academic officer, said at a community meeting at Roosevelt High School Tuesday night that the district was setting a new policy after incidents at Roosevelt and other high schools in which parents had written to complain and students had been disciplined for freak dancing. Parents and school administrators...

Some of our members are priests, others are religious, but most are ordinary laity. Our diverse membership has a common goal -- to fight actively and spiritually to restore Holy Mother Church. The following was originally published in monthly installments through The Wanderer. A word of caution. This is a lengthy but riveting article. Agony in Albany

Principals freaked out by students' dance, dress By Dahleen Glanton Tribune national correspondent Gaoda McFadden still wonders what all the fuss is about. The way the 16-year-old sees it, the principal verreacted by ending his school's homecoming party early because kids were dancing, well, the way kids dance. Like many of his friends at Stephenson High School, McFadden sees nothing wrong with bumping and grinding on the dance floor or being sandwiched between two girls with their hips gyrating against him. After all, he said, you can turn on MTV or Black Entertainment Television and see it all day. "It...

FROM THE TROOPS AT THE FRONT: The article on Salsa in Baghdad is quite amusing, more so because as a US Army Reservist/Salsero currently deployed to Baghdad, Iraq I would like to inform you that we DO have Salsa over in this wonderful desert paradise. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised to find Salsa in Iraq, but the large number of Mexican/Puerto Rican/Latinos in the US military tend to have SOME kind of Latin dancing whenever they are stationed together in large numbers, so it was an inevitable that eventually Salsa would find its way into this joyful desert paradise...

After walking throught the 27th Annual Highland's Street Fair, here in Denver yesterday, I've decided that Liberals have way too much MORE fun than us conservatives... so I'm making the change: I'm going to switch from Bush to Kerry and become a Liberal. They have more fun. Think about it: Liberals can smoke anywhere they like. Second hand smoke doesn't matter to other liberals--THEY ARE TOLLERANT! Drink beer on the street. Dance around drunk. If it feels good DO IT! Dance with anyone they like; girls with girls, guys with guys; kids with adults. If you can't dance, fake it....

Dancing girls and the merry Magdalenian Archaeologists believe that 13,000-year-old cave paintings in Nottinghamshire were part of a continent-wide culture Sean Clarke Thursday April 15, 2004 The Guardian (UK) The people who created the first surviving art in Britain were committed Europeans, belonging to a common culture spanning France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, according to the man who discovered the cave art in Creswell Crags, Nottinghamshire. And the essential preoccupations of this single market in ice-age art, it seems, were hunting and naked dancing girls. The discovery of 13,000-year-old rock paintings in Nottinghamshire last year rewrote ice-age history in...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Her dry cleaning bills are practically nonexistent. Shopping for clothes is never a problem, either. Sheridan voters passed a referendum banning nude dancing Tuesday, but the successful campaign may lead the city into a court battle. All Stars Sports Cabaret owner Troy Lowrie has already sued the city twice over the issue, and another suit is expected now that the referendum passed, City Attorney Jim Windholz said. "As I understand it, the paperwork is sitting on the judge's desk," Mayor Mary Carter said. "Now, we just have to wait and see what the ruling is." Carter compared Tuesday's vote to the anti-gay-rights Amendment 2 when "the people voted in something that was not constitutional," she...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Opponents of a city ordinance banning lap dancing at strip clubs, bikini bars and adult bookstores have a chance to take their gripe to the ballot box. The city clerk certified on Monday that activists have collected enough signatures to force a referendum before the "no-touch" rule can go into effect. The City Council must now decide whether to rescind it, place a referendum on the next citywide ballot in 2005 or add a question to the Democratic presidential primary in March. They have 20 days to decide what to do. Council members voted unanimously in...

When John Ashcroft was nominated for attorney general, his political enemies spent a lot of time mocking him for belonging to a denomination that does not allow its members to engage in dancing. Since taking office, Mr. Ashcroft has done absolutely nothing to infringe upon the rights of people who like to dance. Tom Daschle, however, is now pushing legislation that could send dance promoters to federal prison for up to 20 years. Daschle's anti-dancing legislation is a mean-spirited assault on youth culture, and an extreme violation of principles of federalism. Last year, there was a big push in Congress...
