DARLINGTON, S.C. — Jeremy Mayfield was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR on Saturday for failing a random drug test, becoming the first driver to violate a toughened new policy that went into effect this season. Mayfield tested positive for a banned substance last weekend at Richmond International Raceway. "In my case, I believe that the combination of a prescribed medicine and an over the counter medicine reacted together and resulted in a positive drug test," Mayfield said in a statement. "My doctor and I are working with both Dr. (David) Black and NASCAR to resolve this matter." Black is the CEO...

Darwin’s illegitimate brainchild If you thought Darwin’s Origin was original, think again! by Russell Grigg, Australia The concept of evolution by natural selection is sometimes referred to as Charles Darwin’s brainchild, and indeed he often referred to it in his letters to his friends as his dear ‘child’. However, this is a far cry from the facts. At best it was an adopted child; at worst an illegitimate child...

A Confederate heritage group says its free-speech rights were violated when a landowner removed a billboard promoting Southern history near the famed Darlington Raceway. The Sons of Confederate Veterans plans to demonstrate at the State House next month and buy radio advertisements to complain about losing its billboard on U.S. 52, about two miles from the racetrack. “This is the most chilling thing I’ve seen against freedom of speech,” spokesman Don Gordon said. The Sons of Confederate Veterans bought the billboard this spring in response to remarks by a NASCAR executive about the rebel flag. The billboard featured a Confederate...

CAMP BLUE DIAMOND, AR RAMADI, Iraq (Jan. 9, 2006) -- High above the street, Lance Cpl. Hunter L. Parker stands watch over the neighborhood below. In his view to the east is a carwash frequented by local residents. To his south is a small bridge that spans the Euphrates River. The 19-year-old, Darlington, S.C., native is part of the defense that separates the insurgents operating in Al Anbar’s provincial capital city and the Marine camp here. Since their arrival in August, the burden of protecting the Marines living and working inside the walls of the camp has been firmly placed...

PORT DARLINGTON, Ont. (CP) - Explosions that sent debris into the air "like rockets" and a blaze at what was believed to be a propane company forced the evacuation of about 5,000 people late Tuesday, police said. The fire near the waterfront in the community east of Toronto could be seen for miles and the explosions rocked homes in the area. "I opened the blinds and there was this explosion, at least eight or nine storeys into the sky of light and fire," a woman named Heather reported. "Then we just started hearing the explosions of the propane tanks every...

THIS IS NOT the column I was supposed to write. My newspaper was expecting something about the Chase for the Nextel Cup, a few hundred words about how eight guys are separated by 50 points as they claw for three spots in the group that in two weeks will start a 10-race playoff for this year's title. I spent part of Friday trying to put a column like that together, asking the four Dodge drivers among those eight if the chance their manufacturer could be shut out of the title chase put added pressure on them in Sunday's Pop Secret...

DARLINGTON — Gates were locked with the exception of one for the tour bus barely doing enough business to pay for the gas. Officials were taking down signs that could be blown away by Hurricane Frances instead of putting up signs welcoming fans. No merchandise haulers lined the streets. No campers fill the front and back yards of homes and businesses. The rows of computers in the ticket office sat unmanned. And a lone person sat behind one of the nine desks where normally 20 people battle for room to work. The phones were quiet. The hustle and bustle associated...

DARLINGTON -- Apparently, the race dates and new lights for nighttime events aren't the only things changing at Darlington Raceway. Andrew Gurtis, the president of the raceway for the last three years, was named senior director of operational planning and integration for International Speedway Corp., which owns 13 tracks, 12 of which are stops on the current Nextel Cup. Succeeding Gurtis will be Chris Browning, vice president and general manager of North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham, N.C. "I'm excited about the opportunity," Browning said. "The track has a great tradition, and I'm coming from a track that had a great...

(Fort Worth, Texas-AP) April 21, 2004 - A Texas newspaper reported Wednesday morning the Texas Motor Speedway could get a second NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race next year, but a story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests it may come at the expense of the fall race at Darlington Raceway. The newspaper quotes unnamed sources as saying the Fort Worth raceway will get two races per season as part of a legal settlement. Attorneys for Francis Ferko of Plano sued NASCAR in 2002 on behalf of Speedway Motorsports shareholders. The company built and operates Texas Motor Speedway. The sources say...

(Darlington) May 16, 2003 - While Darlington Raceway will continue to host two Winston Cup NASCAR races, it may be losing the Southern 500. According to a report on ESPN.com, an anonymous source says NASCAR is moving its annual Labor Day weekend race to the California Speedway. "The Track Too Tough To Tame" would retain the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400 in March and inherit a November race from the North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham. Last year's November race at the North Carolina Speedway was the Pop Secret Microwave Popcorn 400, won by Johnny Benson on November 3rd. NASCAR spokesman Jim...

DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) -- Elliott Sadler put up a fast lap early, then waited nervously as driver after driver came up short in qualifying for the Carolina Dodge Dealers 400. The result Friday was Sadler's first pole in 146 Winston Cup races. ``It was pretty exciting to wait through all those cars,'' said Sadler, the 16th of 43 drivers qualifying at Darlington Raceway's demanding 1.366-mile oval. Sadler, in only his fifth race with Robert Yates Racing, was the man to beat all day, leading practice in his No. 38 Ford despite running only five laps. He then backed it up...
