Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius met Wednesday with one of the men who plans to dismantle her new health care law, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp. Sebelius said they didn’t discuss the repeal effort but just Ways and Means issues generally. “I look forward to working with him,” she said in a brief exchange with a POLITICO reporter as she left the Capitol. House Republicans plan to bring the repeal bill to the floor next week, when it is expected to pass.

youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIqQb94d0t4 "The Family Media Detox Challenge" By Jim Bennett Things are a little different around the parsonage these days. We are in the midst of a burgeoning cultural renaissance. The Mrs. and I, along with our children, have agreed to give up television, movies, video games, mp3 players and social networking for the month of September. This started when we cancelled our Dish Network subscription in August. It was an unnecessary expense at a time when we’ve been tightening our belts anyway, but frankly, this isn’t merely a financial decision. It’s more like CPR for the mind. How vividly I...

It's not news that too many government workers get way too sweet of a deal in comparison to those in the private sector. It's no different in cash-strapped Detroit, one of the country's hardest-hit economic areas. Mayor Dave Bing today criticized leaders of the city's largest union [American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, or AFSCME] for foot-dragging on contract negotiations, saying it's costing the financially strapped city $500,000 a month and could result in more layoffs. "Either they can't read, they can't add or they can't comprehend," Bing said at a press conference this morning in his office...

Obama says he is alarmed by deteriorating economyUpdated: Wednesday February 4, 2009 MYT 8:46:33 AM WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama says he is alarmed at how fast the U.S. economy has deteriorated, and worrying about it keeps him up at night. In a series of network television interviews, the president said the short-term outlook is bleak. He told CNN that even three months ago, most economists would not have predicted the economy was "in as bad of a situation as we are in right now." There is "no magic bullet," he told Fox News. But he said that working with Congress...

ST. Federal regulators have voted to impose severe restrictions on salmon fishing off the coasts of Oregon and Northern California to protect dwindling populations in the Klamath River. The Pacific Fishery Management Council decided to close about 700 miles of coastline to commercial salmon fishing for most of June and July. Those are generally the most productive months of the season.

My Meeting with Dave Armstrong. It finally happened! On a recent business trip I made to Detroit (aka "Mo-town"), I set aside a few hours to meet and get acquainted with the famed and prolific Catholic writer and apologist, Dave Armstrong, as well as his lovely family. It is easy to form opinions of people from what one reads on-line. Many times, literary personalities are quite different from the one's live persona. That has happened to me, and as a matter of personal policy, I myself try not to fall into the same error. This is an error many fall...

Chappelle's home After a brief South African ''spiritual retreat,'' comedian Dave Chappelle is back at his part-time home in Yellow Springs, Ohio, reports TV Guide Online. Fans feared Chappelle had checked into a mental facility earlier this month when news circulated he'd halted his hit Chappelle's Show to seek medical help in Africa. But the funnyman insisted he was just ''stressed out'' and needed a break. Now, Chappelle has returned to his hometown, but his agent Matt Labov insists there's still no signs that he'll return to making his show and he has been told not to book any live...

Dave Mustaine was reportedly willing to cancel Megadeth's Greek dates (to be more specific: wherever Rotting Christ are set to appear as support) due to his known dislike for black/death metal bands that depict religious issues in a negative light. Here's what a member of Megadeth's official forums posted concerning this issue and what Dave Mustaine posted in response (as found on the band's forums): # April3rd: Well, Megadeth will be playing Greece this summer. Both Athens and Thessaloniki. Although it is not yet on the Killing Road the company that organizes the concert announced that the support act for...

A Gannett News editor has called for the dismissal of criminal charges against four anti-war protesters who vandalized an Army recruiting office near Ithaca, New York and poured blood on the office's American flag.Writing in his syndicated column, Dave Rossie justified the actions of the self-styled "St. Patrick's Day Four" as necessary to counter "Americans' sheep-like acceptance of this administration's lies and deceptions" over the war in Iraq: The defendants have said they acted out of conscience in opposition to an unjust and illegal war, and it would be unfair, it says here, to doubt their motives. They certainly had...

Immediately following 3/5's attack on the apartment buildings, 3/1 took the train station on the north end of the city. While the engineers blew a breach through the train trestle, the Cavalry soldiers poured through with their tanks and Bradley's and chewed an opening in the enemy defense. 3/1 followed them through until they reached a phase line deep into the northern half of the city. The Marine infantry along with a few tanks then turned to the right and attacked the heart of the enemy defense. The fighting was tough as the enemy had the area dialed in with...

Penn State Republicans Greet Dave Matthews Band Concertgoers, Friday October 1st About six o’clock Friday evening, over thirty Republicans greeted concertgoers at the entrance of the Bryce Jordan Center at Penn State. While the Young Republicans from Penn State held down the corner at University Drive drawing cheers and jeers from the passing traffic, a few of us strung out along the walk to the main entrance of the center. I had with me my battle scared Bush/Cheney sign from the September engagement with Teresa admires and the Mothers Opposed to Bush (MOB) thugs at Swab Auditorium. Some people in...

The United Kingdom's Political Cartoon Society selected a cartoon published by The Independent in January depicting a naked Ariel Sharon biting off the bloodied head of a Palestinian child as helicopter warships hovered overhead blasting out "Vote Sharon" from loudspeakers as its "Cartoon of the Year." Kerry's hand gestures during his acceptance speech seemed to be directly from the movie DAVE. The movie is about a Presidential look-a-like/impersonator who takes over as (and assumes the identity of) the President of the United states after the real President goes into a coma. In the the movie there is a scene where the character, Dave, is demonstrating the President's hand gestures used during speeches. If you have not seen the movie you simply MUST. As I was watching Kerry last night it occured to me that Kerry seemed to be emulating the movie. I kid you not. Too...

Two months ago Wednesday, retired Gen. Wesley Clark announced he was joining the crowded race for the Democratic presidential nomination. After eight weeks of nonstop campaigning, Clark is preparing for what some consider a rite of passage for those seeking public office: late-night television. Clark is set to appear on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Thursday. "We've been talking to comedy writers and we regard this as an important experience," said Clark's communications director, Matt Bennett, adding that a variety show is a viable campaign stop. "Letterman is very influential," Bennett said. It appears that Clark was testing...

September 30, 2003, 9:10 a.m. Dave Kopel Unarmed for the Election Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't know the basics of California gun laws. Arnold Schwarzenegger's recent appearance on the Sean Hannity Show regarding gun control suggests that he is amazingly ignorant of current gun laws in California. Hannity asked Schwarzenegger what he thought of the "assault-weapon" ban and the Brady Bill. Schwarzenegger replied, "Yes I do support that. And also I would like to close the loophole on the gun shows." While the federal ban on so-called "assault weapons" is scheduled to sunset in September 2004, the much more severe California prohibition...

There's just over a year to go before the 2004 presidential election, and everybody in the nation is extremely excited. Except of course the public. The public, shrewdly, pays no attention to presidential politics until all of the peripheral dorks have been weeded out, and it's finally time to make a selection between the two main dorks left over.

It is told that one day a very ugly man approached Abraham Lincoln and thrust his gun in Lincoln's face. "What is the matter?'' Lincoln asked. "Some years ago," said the stranger, "I swore an oath that if I ever came across an uglier man than myself I'd shoot him on the spot." Lincoln answered, "Shoot me. For if I am uglier than you...I don't want to live." Abraham Lincoln is generally considered to have been an ugly man. But, when you look at his face it has a distinct beauty about it. In the end it doesn't matter what...

Teenage film critic Billy Norris works for David Letterman's sister.St. Petersberg Times. David Letterman's kid sister, a newspaper editor in Florida, may have played a decisive role in his latest battle with late-night rival Jay Leno. It seems that both Letterman's "Late Show" and Leno's "The Tonight Show" wanted to snag Florida eighth-grader Billy Norris, who writes movie reviews for the St. Petersburg Times, as a guest. Norris, 14, has been a local media star of sorts because he is probably the youngest movie critic working for a daily newspaper in the country. Letterman had a trump card in snagging...
