Rep. Maxine Waters of California warned her supporters not to be baited into a confrontation with a a far-right militia group planning a protest at her South-Central Los Angeles office Thursday. The Oath Keepers, which claims 35,000 members who often dress in military gear and carry military-grade rifles at protests and events across the country, issued a “call to action” for Thursday to protest Waters’ “incitement of terrorism” and Democrats’ opposition to Republican immigration policies. Waters does not want counter-protesters to clash with the Oath Keepers and urged her supporters to stay away until they’re gone.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Wednesday urged her supporters not to counter-rally against upcoming armed protests against her. She said the Oath Keepers, a far-right association associated with militia movements, are planning several weeks of protests against her, which are slated to start on Thursday. The Southern Poverty Law Center has described the group as a "fiercely anti-government, militaristic group" who often stage heavily-armed protests. Some Waters supporters are reportedly planning counter-protests at the same time and place, but Waters said this would only "exacerbate" the tension. "I am requesting those individuals and groups planning a counter-protest to not be...

A far-right, anti-government group outraged over Rep. Maxine Waters' (D-Calif.) call for the public to confront Trump administration officials planned a protest outside her office on Thursday – but then never showed up. The Oath Keepers called on members this week to show up outside the California Democrat's South Los Angeles office for a "protest against Maxine Waters’ incitement of terrorism, and a stand FOR ICE and the Border Patrol." But police at the protest site told the Los Angeles Times that the group had notified authorities that it no longer planned to hold the demonstration, in order to keep...

A group of counterprotesters gathered outside the California office of U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters on Thursday, burning and stepping on an American flag after a group of far-right demonstrators failed to show up. The Oath Keepers said they would rally against the congresswoman they call a "protest terrorist inciter" early Thursday afternoon, prompting counterprotesters ...

In my opinion, the fact that Maxine Waters supporters stole an American flag is far more significant than the fact that they burned it This article from the Washington Times includes the following photograph of Maxine Waters supporters burning an American flag: As a libertarian who believes in free speech and property rights, I think it should be legal to burn the American flag as long as both of the following conditions are met:1) The flag being burned is the property of the person (or people) who is (or are) burning it, i.e., the flag is not stolen.and2) The flag is...

Supporters of Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters reportedly burned and stomped on an American flag they snatched off a pickup truck Thursday, while chanting "Black power" outside her California office. The demonstrators showed up with the intent of countering a planned protest from a far-right group. That group, the Oath Keepers, had said they would rally against the congresswoman they call a "protest terrorist inciter" early Thursday afternoon, prompting counterprotesters to rally in support of Waters. But the Oath Keepers did not arrive, the Los Angeles Times reported. Still, a few dozen pro-Waters counterprotesters, including union workers, church leaders, South Los...

Rep. Maxine Waters warned supporters on Wednesday of potential "armed protests" against her after an extremist group called for ongoing demonstrations outside her office in Los Angeles. In a lengthy statement issued late Wednesday, Waters, D-Calif., said she’d been notified about forthcoming protests by the Oath Keepers, which she described as "an anti-government militia" that's staged armed protests in cities across the country. She warned her supporters against being "baited" into counter-demonstrations or confrontations with the organization, which she said has a track record of "violent and provocative behavior." "I am requesting those individuals and groups planning a counter-protest to...

As 1968 began, Paul Ehrlich was an entomologist at Stanford University, known to his peers for his groundbreaking studies of the co-evolution of flowering plants and butterflies but almost unknown to the average person. That was about to change. In May, Ehrlich released a quickly written, cheaply bound paperback, The Population Bomb. Initially it was ignored. But over time Ehrlich’s tract would sell millions of copies and turn its author into a celebrity. It would become one of the most influential books of the 20th century—and one of the most heatedly attacked. The first sentence set the tone: “The battle...

Leading presidential hopeful López Obrador seeks to broaden his appeal and soften his reputation as a hot-headed populist _________________________________________________________ MEXICO CITY—Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a nationalist who built his career blocking oil wells and railing against the political elite, is trying a third time to achieve what he failed to do twice before: win the Mexican presidency. The 64-year-old leftist candidate is leading in the polls ahead of the July 1 election after trying to reinvent himself with a new party, unlikely allies and as a champion of national unity who doesn’t threaten Mexico’s traditional economic powers. Although once a...

West Virginia's Sen. Joe Manchin (D.) criticized House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) after being shown a clip of her characterizing President Donald Trump's immigration plan as a way to "Make America White Again." CNN's "State of the Union" host Jake Tapper used the Pelosi clip to start a discussion on immigration. "Let me just say what I said last night: that plan is a campaign to make America white again," Pelosi said. "You know what, we don't need that type of rhetoric on either side, from Nancy, Paul Ryan or anybody else," Manchin said. Manchin proceeded to say...

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) believes the recent three-day government shutdown and the deal to end it on Monday gave Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and other illegal immigrant Dreamers “a better chance” of getting a pathway to citizenship. Flake has been working with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) on a bill that would give a “12-year pathway to citizenship for about 2 million” illegal immigrant Dreamers and “legal status for their parents.” On Monday, Senate Democrats agreed to a three-week spending bill in exchange for a DACA vote before February 8. “I do think that...

He has failed to pass legislation, under a legal cloud and facing threats of impeachment, but that's not the end of the story. Donald Trump is on a high, writes Bruce Wolpe. Donald Trump is the most unpopular president at this stage of his tenure than any president in modern American history. But that's not the end of the story. He has not secured passage of one major piece of legislation through Congress, failing spectacularly in his efforts to repeal Obamacare. He has presided over a precipitous decline in America's standing in the world, and has engaged in ugly exchanges...

I've spent my career as an advocate for economic justice, fighting for basic fairness for working families. It wasn't until this past year that I began fighting for my own life. It's that fight that led me to get arrested protesting the Republican tax plan in Washington, and that led me into debating it with Sen. Jeff Flake at 30,000 feet in the air on my way home. Hillary: Trump, China should soften up on North Korea Hillary Clinton used a conference in Beijing to blast both President Trump and the Chinese over their stance toward North Korea — saying it needs to soften up soon before things get out of hand and nuclear war breaks out. Serving as the keynote speaker at Caijing Magazine’s three-day annual conference on Tuesday, the former secretary of state called on Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to avoid “bluster” and “personal taunts” when dealing with Pyongyang, according to Bloomberg. She reportedly criticized the Trump administration for retreating from diplomacy in recent...

The three networks on Thursday night immediately derided Donald Trump’s “dark speech” as one coming from a “vengeful” “demagogue.” On NBC, Tom Brokaw allowed that “some” will see Trump as on a “white horse who will lead them to some kind of sanctuary and then pull the drawbridge up.” But he sneered, “Others looking in are going to see someone they will only think as a demagogue of some kind.” Chuck Todd labeled, “I thought it was an extraordinarily dark speech.” Republican operative Nicolle Wallace lamented, “We are now represented as a party by a man who believes in protectionism,...
