After the 2004 election, there were widespread reports of serious voting problems in Ohio. The Democratic National Committee's Voting Rights Institute made a commitment to investigate these reports and ascertain exactly what happened on November 2 in Ohio. An exhaustive five-month investigation by the VRI's research and investigative team identified grave problems in the administration of Ohio's voting system. More than 1 in 4 voters in Ohio faced problems at the polls, including illegal requests for identification, long lines, poorly trained election officials, and more. There were also dramatic disparities in voting conditions among different races; African Americans waited nearly...

Some issues, especially those that even tangentially involve race, become so one-sided there is no respectable opposition. But sometimes shifting political sands make it acceptable in polite company to oppose what was once a motherhood cause. It happened with affirmative action, and we may be approaching that same point regarding the current truism that increasing voter turnout is good, regardless of whether doing so encourages, or at least tolerates, fraud. Obviously, we will never return to the days when people could be prevented or pressured from voting based on their race. But cases in Orlando and in Wisconsin and state...

Democrat Christine Gregoire will be sworn in as Washington's Governor today, possibly thanks to voters such as Mary Coffey, James Courneya and Rosalie Simpson. Why do we mention them in particular? Because, as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer recently reported, they're all dead... Revelations of the formerly living casting ballots in elections isn't new to American politics, although it's something most of us thought was a relic of the late Richard Daley's Chicago. But this isn't the only jaw-dropper to have come out of Washington's gubernatorial race, which Ms. Gregoire claims to have won -- on a third recount, by 129 votes...

Hi, Why Did You Drop My Paper? By ANNA BAHNEY ournalists at The Philadelphia Inquirer began the new year in proper fashion, by working the phones. But some senior editors were not calling sources. They were calling readers. On Thursday, a handful of top editors, including the executive editor, Amanda Bennett, began making personal phone calls to former subscribers, many of whom dropped the paper this year after The Inquirer ran a series of editorials favoring John F. Kerry for president. "If the people I call say, 'Yes, I was mad at your editorial,' then the next thing I say...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Christine Iverson (202) 863-8614 WASHINGTON DC -- “The Republican party has a zero-tolerance policy for anything that smacks of impropriety in registering voters and we challenge our Democratic counterparts whose selective outrage does not apply to Democrat aligned groups like ACT, ACORN and others despite widespread allegations of systematic voter registration fraud to do the same.“Anyone who engages in fraudulent voter registration activities should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

MONTPELIER — Republican Randy Brock on Monday called on his election opponent, State Auditor Elizabeth Ready, to cease overseeing state audits until she can explain why several biographies credit her with college degrees she does not possess. Ready, a two-term Democrat from Lincoln seeking re-election on Nov. 2, said she has no intention of recusing herself. "I have a contract with Vermonters," she said Monday. "And I'm going to keep that contract." A biographical sketch book published by the Vermont secretary of state from 1988 to 1996 reported that Ready holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont. Editions...
