  • Some military discharges mean no benefits after service ends

ST. LOUIS (AP) No medical or mental health care. No subsidized college or work training. For many who leave the U.S. military with less-than-honorable discharges, including thousands who suffered injuries and anguish in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, standard veterans benefits are off limits. The discharge serves as a scarlet letter of dishonor, and the effects can be severe: Ex-military members with mental health problems or post-traumatic stress disorder can't turn to Veterans Affairs hospitals or clinics; those who want to go to college aren't eligible for the GI Bill; the jobless get no assistance for career training; the homeless are...

What happens to people who send classified data through unsecured e-mail channels? Unless his or her name rhymes with Millary Minton, it usually results in legal discipline or prosecution. As a reminder of what happens to rank-and-file Americans who act with gross negligence in retaining and transmitting classified data, The Daily Beast’s Michael Daly spotlights the legal battle of a Marine Corps officer and New York City firefighter who violated the law — in an attempt to warn people of a danger that went tragically ignored: As the protégé of an accused drug lord with connections to the then...

A United States Marine was convicted at a court-martial for refusing to remove a Bible verse on her computer – a verse of Scripture the military determined “could easily be seen as contrary to good order and discipline.” The plight of Lance Corporal Monifa Sterling seems unbelievable – a member of the Armed Forces criminally prosecuted for displaying a slightly altered passage of Scripture from the Old Testament: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper.” Sterling, who represented herself at trial, was convicted February 1, 2014 in a court-martial at Camp Lejune, North Carolina after she refused to obey orders...

House Democrats will use a parliamentary procedure to try to break a logjam over government funding and bring a “clean” continuing resolution to the floor, according to senior Democratic lawmakers and leadership aides. Reps. George Miller (D-Calif.) and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) will attempt to “hijack” an existing Republican bill and file a discharge petition that ripens in just seven legislative days, instead of the normal 30 days. Under the procedure that Miller and Van Hollen plan to use, they can begin gathering signatures on their discharge petition on Oct. 11, one week from today. If the Democratic pair were...

John Boehner has promised conservatives he won't let any bill lacking support from most Republicans come to a vote. There's a way around this problem: the discharge petition. If 218 members of the House sign one, then it automatically comes to the House floor for a vote. Democrats only have 201 votes, so they'd need seventeen Republicans to join them, plus one for every Democrat who defects. If Boehner wants the bill to pass, he wouldn't want to punish the handful of Republicans who sign a petition.

Democratic gun rights supporters will risk losing their A-plus rating if they don’t sign a discharge petition to be filed Wednesday bringing the gun-rights bill directly to the floor. It will be the first time in more than 20 years that the NRA has “scored” a discharge petition in determining the grades it gives lawmakers before the November election, said spokesman Andrew Arulanandam. “We’re making this a priority....

There is overwhelming evidence that the Navy gave John Kerry either a dishonorable discharge or an undesirable discharge – which is the equivalent of a dishonorable discharge without the felony conviction – and that, as a result of such discharge, he was stripped of all of his famous but questionable Navy awards and medals. And the kicker? The evidence is on his website!

Had a thought tonight. Kerry is a Life Member of VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America). VVA fell out of VVAW. When folks join VVA, they are required to furnish their DD-214. I wonder if there is a copy of that lovely form anywhere on record in the VVA offices???? Anyone know???

As a former Army Remington Raider you may understand the details of this better then me. The earlier Internet statements that John Kerry got a dishonorable discharge (DD) were wrong. You and I...

From "Navy Chief" at the SwiftVet forum... The information I posted about a former SECNAV and Kerry's Discharge was pulled at my request because I jumped the gun. You couldn't believe the powerplay behind the scenes at this moment regarding this story. You can call me many things (and probably will) -- I don't care. This isn't my call anymore on how/where/when/why this story will come out. I've been told/asked/cajoled whatever you wish to call it -- to stand down. So, this Chief will STAND DOWN (for now). That's all I have to say on the matter. If you want...

He tried to run for President of the United States as the war hero he was but that didn't work out too well. Yes, he was a war hero and is celebrated as such. The problem is, according to many thousands of Vietnam veterans, John Kerry became a war hero for the communist Vietnamese, not for our side. Why did our enemy like John Kerry enough that they still hold him in a place of honor? Well, it's all rather well documented for anyone willing to read a little and look at the photos.[1] In a nutshell, Kerry was (is)...
