(NJ) Poorer school districts are less diverse than ever

While the state has seen demographic shifts in suburban school districts, the isolation and intense concentration of minority students in the 31 Abbott school districts is worse today than it was 20 years ago. That's the basis for a "friend of the court" brief filed jointly by the New Jersey Black Issues Convention and the Hispanic Directors Association, two influential umbrella organizations. They are among nine groups challenging the state's overhaul of the school funding formula that guaranteed additional aid to the state's neediest districts. Locally, Paterson, Passaic and Garfield are classified as Abbott districts. The court is scheduled...

Some in Cicero take issue with flying of Mexican flag in park

In a town once predominantly Eastern European but now mostly Mexican, there's a flag flap blowing in the wind. Cicero residents recently complained that the Mexican flag was flying at the town's new Cicero Community Park. Although the U.S. and Illinois flags, as well as a sports flag, are flown there, some longtime residents accused town officials of being un-American and demanded the Mexican flag be taken down. "We are at war and you're flying a foreign flag?" Susan Masek, 56, said at last week's town meeting. "We want that flag down. This is the United States. Only the American...

UNC-Wilmington decided recently that the way to bolster its failing diversity program is to dump more money into it. Without any help from the Bush administration’s financial advisors, they have decided that rewarding failure is a good way to ensure success. That’s why they created a new Associate Provost of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion position. And that’s why they paid big bucks to Jose Hernandez to fill the slot. According to a university press release, the new tolerance czar will focus on four areas of “diversity and inclusion” including the following: Centro Hispano, the Multicultural Center, the African-American Cultural Center,...

Eighth-Grade Boy Fights For Right To Wear Makeup

A Hamilton teenager is fighting for his right to wear makeup at school, but school leaders say it's a distraction. "They're gender stereo-typing. He's being sexually discriminated against. Nowhere in the rules does it say that males can't wear make-up" says Mindy Ball. The Hamilton mother says she stands 100% behind her son, 13-year-old Matt Allsup, an eighth grader at Garfield Middle School who wears black eye makeup, lipstick and fingernail polish. But on Monday, he was told to wash the makeup off his face, with the assistant principal telling him it was distracting and against dress code. "When I...

I am going to keep this short and to the point. Does anyone else ever question this media monopoly which is able to capture the attention of every air traveler in the country? I don't get it. Why does CNN have this exclusive monopoly in public airports? They have the lock on the attention of the millions of air travelers that move throughout the country. Why is CNN allowed...

Spokane, Wash. (AP) -- Sherry Jones knew it would be hard to get her first novel published. Getting "The Jewel of Medina" into bookstores was even harder. After overcoming the formidable hurdles any new author faces, Jones was overjoyed to sell the book to Random House. Then Random House canceled its publication at the last minute for fear the historical novel about Aisha, child bride of the prophet Muhammad, would incite riots in the Muslim world.

Character v Diversity

An African-American from Generation X, two White Guys from the Silent Generation and a woman from Generation X. Arguably, the greatest diversity the U.S. has ever seen in its leading general election candidates for the Presidency. I think that’s a healthy thing. The progress our nation has made on the topic of diversity is, surely, the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. But, he taught us not to judge people based on observable differences – e.g. the color of skin (or the age of skin or the shape of skin).
Am I Diverse Enough?

Am I Diverse Enough? by: Deborah Lambert, August 25, 2008 When Andrew Quinio graduated from Berkeley in May 2008, one of his proudest achievements had to be serving as editor-in-chief of the California Patriot, the conservative campus magazine. However, in a recent column on mindingthecampus.com, Andrew noted that it was impossible to reflect on his four years at Berkeley without thinking of the word “diversity.” While the goal was supposedly a climate of “cultural tolerance and understanding,” Berkeley “appeared to encourage a divisive culture of victimhood and entitlement.” For example, “housing students by race seemed . . . an odd...
