When something is free, but it’ll take a long time to get it, there’s always the chance that someone will try to take advantage of the situation to make a profit off impatient people. In Colorado, the attorney general’s office is investigating a scalping scheme that involves scammers hoarding driver’s license appointments with the Department of Motor Vehicles, then turning around and selling them to undocumented residents. Many undocumented residents want to get a driver’s license, but are experiencing a long wait to obtain one, more than two years after the IDs were made legal, reports CBS Denver. It’s a...

California issues 605,000 driver's licenses to immigrants By Associated Press Published: 20:53 EST, 6 January 2016 | Updated: 20:53 EST, 6 January 2016 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California issued more than a half-million driver's licenses under a new law granting the identifying documents to immigrants who may be in the country illegally. The Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday that 605,000 licenses were issued since AB60 took effect last January. That's out of 830,000 applications. AB60 allows people who can't prove they're in the country legally to obtain driver's licenses using identification from their home countries.

Attorneys for an Albemarle County-based civil liberties advocacy group are challenging the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ order to revoke specialty commemorative license plates bearing the Confederate battle flag. The Rutherford Institute’s legal counsel filed a petition Wednesday in Brunswick County Circuit Court asking for a review and reversal of the divisive ruling to recall the plates issued to 1,600 members of the state’s division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Gov. Terry McAuliffe called for the change earlier this year when the flag fell into controversy following a racially motivated shooting in June at a South Carolina church, calling...

State drivers licenses are among those from four states that will no longer cut it for clearing airport security under tightened measures that will go into effect sometime in 2016. But travelers may not face any obstacles anytime soon. The DMV has asked for an extension from Homeland Security for the Real ID Act, which calls for the extra ID measures in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks. We have no reason to believe that any New Yorker will have a problem using their current state-issued ID card to get on a plane come January 2016, the DMV said...

(The last few times I went to the DMV I was dressed casually, but the reaction was similar.) I came with my forms printed and filled out ahead of time, and stood in line to get a number. The security officer was walking by right as I got there, and immediately asked what I had, so I told him...
  • (CT) DMV Fees Increasing on July 1

The state's fiscal woes are about to hit motorists right in their wallets. Effective July 1, several Department of Motor Vehicles fees will increase and a number of new laws will be on the books. The changes, all results of legislative action during the recent session of the General Assembly, cover a wide variety of services and responsibilities that DMV provides to the public. These fee increases are modest and are part of the shared sacrifice needed to help resolve the states budget issues, DMV Commissioner Melody A. Currey said. Currey also said that the law changes are part of...

When Mark Mackey, a member of the local Calvary Chapel, showed up to the DMV office in Hemet, CA on February 2, he had a goal: read the Bible and introduce those waiting in line to the gospel of Jesus Christ. And for about 15 minutes he was successful. That is until a California Highway Patrolman took the Bible from his hands, arrested him, and told him he was guilty of preaching to a captive audience. And it was all caught on video: According to reports, Mackey wasnt the only one arrested. Pastor Brett Coronado and Edmond Flores, Jr., who...

We all expect to wait when we head to the Department of Motor Vehicles, but one group of residents is waiting at least 5 months for a crucial piece of paper. "It almost feels like you're being held hostage. There's nothing you can do. You just have to wait for the state of Connecticut to get around to processing your title. They can't even give you a guesstimate on how long you'll wait!" said Cheryl Bragoni, of East Granby. Employees handling your car titles are stuck in a paper pileup. Bragoni applied for a title last November and is still...

Police say that at least seven employees at the state license bureau in Delray Beach have been taking bribes to issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens. The scam allegedly put drivers licenses in the hands more than 1,500 illegal aliens. On Thursday, police in Palm Beach arrested Willy Adam, 52, and charged him with five counts of unlawful compensation to reward official behavior, and two counts of conspiracy, both felonies. At his arraignment, Palm Beach County Assistant State Attorney Alan Johnson, told Judge Ted S. Booras that Adam is not a U.S. citizen and presents a flight risk. He is...

This is Garth Yeaman, the 30-year-old who valiantly struggled to keep the world's greatest license plate from being destroyed by Virginia's humorless bureaucracy. He lost the battle, but he's not giving up the war. We interviewed him. Here's his story. Jalopnik first wrote about Yeaman's plates in 2008 when they popped up online. The plate shows two small red hand prints with the words "Kids First" underneath a blank space. The money for these plates goes for domestic violence and prevention, thus it was an ironic choice when Yeaman chose the letters "EAT THE" to go on his plates. "I...

The number of people from outside the state getting drivers licenses in Washington last year jumped by more than 30,000 over the previous year, according to numbers kept by the state Department of Licensing. Records show 159,501 out-of-staters obtained licenses last year. In 2009, there were 129,323, which was a drop of 11,071 from the previous year. One state analyst says the 2010 increase may be one sign of economic recovery in Washington. "In-migration improved in 2010 for economic reasons," said Alice Vogel, an economic analyst with the Licensing Dept. "We may have had more jobs or more affordable housing;...

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Department of Motor Vehicles employee who sent a letter to a transgender woman warning of eternal damnation after she sought to record her sex change on her driver's license has quit his job, the DMV said today. Thomas Demartini, who had worked as a customer service representative at the department's San Francisco office for about two years, submitted a letter of resignation Wednesday evening, DMV spokesman Michael Marando said. The department placed Demartini on administrative leave, with pay, shortly after the woman reported the incident in late October. Marando said the DMV has nearly completed an...
  • PALIN and GOPALIN license plate ban by Nevada DMV overturned after year-long court fight

After a year-long legal fight, the Nevada DMV has admitted that their censorship of the personalized license plate GO PALIN (as well as any other plate relating to Sarah Palin) does not follow state law, and they will have to issue GO PALIN. Viewing this as a free-speech issue (since personalized plates have been issued for ALGORE, DMOCRAT, HILLARY, TEAMSTER, LEFT, etc., with no prohibitions on BIDEN or OBAMA plates, but GOPALIN, PALIN, PALIN12, PALIN16, REPBLCN, BUSH, etc., were banned as "offensive" and against state law), Capt. James Linlor of Zephyr Cove, Nevada challenged the Nevada DMV's seemingly biased practices....

In a legal opinion rooted in the summertime death of a nun hit by an alleged drunken driver, Virginia's attorney general ruled that the state Department of Motor Vehicles does not have to accept work permits as sole proof that a driver's license applicant is in the country legally. The advisory opinion came in response to an inquiry from DMV Commissioner Richard Holcomb. The DMV can accept -- or refuse to accept -- an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or work permit, as the sole proof that the applicant is in the country legally,Cuccinelli ruled."It should be noted that the EAD may sometimes...

COLLIER TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A teenager who had just passed his driving test crashed into a state driver license center in western Pennsylvania Wednesday. The crash happened Wednesday afternoon as the teen was trying to leave the parking lot of a driver license center in the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center on Washington Pike in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bridgeville. Witness Tyler Cherilla said that a young driver appeared to be taking a test with an instructor when the car went through a window, sending glass shattering inside the center.
