  • St. Patrick’s Cathedral gets donations from non-Catholics for repairs

A good chunk of the $100 million raised to restore St. Patrick’s Cathedral has come from non-Catholics — a testament to the love and respect New Yorkers have for all religions, Timothy Cardinal Dolan said Monday. “We couldn’t be that far were it not for non-Catholic benefactors who have been extraordinarily good to us,” Dolan said in an Association for a Better New York speech. One “prominent Jewish man” told Dolan that as a child he loved visiting St. Patrick’s, where his mother would always light a candle. “He said, ‘I don’t think she ever paid for them so ....

When I heard that Bill Clinton was making as much as $500,000 per speech and made many more millions in his post-presidency, I thought to myself, God bless him. This is the American way. Former President Clinton’s speaker fees are probably in line with other former presidents who draw big fees, maybe bigger owing to his global popularity. But God bless them all. Last week, GOP chief weasel, Reince Priebus, was squawking about Hillary Clinton and how she allegedly gotten all this money from the kings of other countries, which would, of course, be illegal. The supposedly unbiased PolitiFact decided to look at his claims. Their findings: "Priebus said Clinton took "money from kings of Saudi Arabia and Morocco and Oman and Yemen." The monarchies of Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Oman have contributed to the Clinton Foundation, but Yemen, which does not have a king, has not.

Major contributors like the Koch brothers and Tom Steyer would get a break on gift taxes to secretive non-profit groups. The House on Wednesday with little fanfare passed legislation that would protect major donors like the Koch brothers and Tom Steyer from having to pay gift taxes on huge donations to secret money political groups. The legislation, which now heads to the Senate, is seen by fundraising operatives as removing one of the few remaining potential obstacles to unfettered big-money spending by nonprofit groups registered under a section of the Tax Code — 501(c) — that allows them to shield...

Is it a good thing or a bad thing that a presidential candidate demonstrates an ability to raise enough money to effectively reach the “inhabitants of America” with his political message? On Friday, National Public Radio’s The Diane Rehm Show took a further drag on our tax dollars to take incredulous note of the fact that four Super PACs supportive of Republican Ted Cruz’s campaign for president declared having collected, collectively, $31 million. One of Diane’s guests, Neal King, Jr., with the Wall Street Journal, explained that all four PACs associated with the Cruz effort sport the “Keep the Promise”...

"Even in the context of a presidential campaign cycle in which the major party nominees are expected to raise more than $1.5 billion, Cruz’s haul is eye-popping, one that instantly raises the stakes in the Republican fundraising contest," writes Mark Halperin at Bloomberg. According to a Wednesday story in Bloomberg, the Ted Cruz for President Campaign has let it be known that a group of super PACs associated with the campaign expects to have $31 million in the bank by Friday. This feat is impressive considering that the Cruz campaign is not even two weeks old, and the super PACs in question were formed just this week. In the political fundraising game, this is what is called shock and awe. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is likely to be the champion fund raiser on the Republican side. But the news of Cruz’s feat,...

Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican senator, raised nearly $4 million in the eight days after he announced his presidential campaign, according to The Wall Street Journal. What’s important about that number is that almost all of it came in amounts of less than $100. That’s a big change for Mr. Cruz. During his Senate run in 2012, 80 percent of the money he collected from individuals were in donations of $200 or more, the threshold for when donor’s names are listed on Federal Election Commission reports. Assuming The Journal’s report is correct that about 95 percent of the donations raised...

After the theatrical launch of his presidential campaign Monday, Sen. The Texas Republican and tea party darling is months behind his competitors in recruiting the megadonors and bundlers essential to a credible GOP primary bid. Madison — The state must revise its laws governing political spending — especially that done by independent groups — in light of recent free speech decisions by federal courts, the head of Wisconsin's elections agency told lawmakers Tuesday. Spurred by federal judges, outside groups and their own preference for less regulation, GOP lawmakers are considering changes to the state's complex campaign laws that would likely make it easier for independent groups to spend money to influence Wisconsin politics. • Funds for West Texas Relief Withheld

For most of the world, the tragedy in West, Texas that began with the explosion of the fertilizer plant, ended with a remarkable outpouring of support from fellow Texans and friends far away, raising money and sending more supplies than the town could handle. With over $3 million funds donated, everything seemed on track for a fast recovery and rebuild.

Dear Mr. Priebus, I just received a request for a donation. I will not be giving any money to the GOP on any federal level until two things happen. 1) Any immigration bill dies in congress this year. I don't trust the party to dangle out enforcement and border security in an amnesty deal. I don't trust the GOP to work anything out. Amnesty will kill the conservative movement, if not the GOP and I am sick of my voice not being heard. So don't waste the paper and postage mailing me unless congress passes an enforcement/border security only law....

When Tiffany got the text message, the former Air Force Reservist thought it was a scam. “Call this number. They’re giving out free homes to veterans.” It might as well have been a heartfelt missive from a down-on-his-luck Nigerian prince or an urgent notification that she’d won 2 million pounds in the British lottery. The Philadelphia woman who once served at the Horsham airbase immediately called the friend who’d sent the text to let her know her phone had been hacked. But it wasn’t a scam. It wasn’t spam. It was Operation Homefront. Courtesy of the national nonprofit, the single...

Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Calif., believes that if her Assembly Bill 926 passes, researchers will be able to pay egg donors as they develop medical advances that can help all women. To her, the bill is an issue of simple fairness -- gender equity, really. Since a well-intended 2006 bill banned researchers from paying egg donors more than expense reimbursement, researchers have been at a competitive disadvantage, while affluent couples can offer fertile women top dollar. UCSF Professor Marcelle Cedars lamented at a hearing of the state Senate Health Committee on Wednesday that the status quo robs potential egg donors of...

House Republicans who are critical of the federal health care law have written to more than a dozen companies, including top insurers Aetna and BlueCross BlueShield, to ask if President Obama’s top health official tried to solicit funds from them to support the overhaul. The Committee on Energy and Commerce is looking into reports that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called members of the health care industry to suggest they donate to Enroll America, a nonprofit that is promoting the Affordable Care Act. Chairman Fred Upton, Michigan Republican, signed onto a request from House and Senate leaders that...

Since last weekend, Mr and Mrs Regular Citizen have been denied the access people used to be granted to tour the White House, purportedly because of the clampdown on federal spending since the "sequester" that imposed cuts across the board. And their cancellation is an austerity measure that saves a pittance, while more frivolous taxpayer funding for items like the White House dog walker continues. Meanwhile, noble Americans can buy time with the president for a suggested donation of $500,000 to his new campaign group, Organising for Action.
