TORONTO, Librarians at the Toronto Public Library were asked to remove copies of Dr. Seuss’ 1963 children's book "Hop on Pop” from the establishment’s collection because it allegedly promotes violence. A document detailing the seven books the library has been asked to remove over the past year was posted online on Monday. The book “encourages children to use violence against their fathers,” according to the complaint. In addition to apologizing to fathers in the Toronto area, the complainant also asked that the library “pay for damages resulting from the book.” The Materials Review Committee pointed out that the book is...
  • Lou Dobbs bashes ‘The Lorax’ and ‘Secret World of Arrietty’ for ‘indoctrinating liberal agenda’

In the Dr. Seuss book, the Lorax speaks for trees, "for the trees have no tongues." Lou Dobbs, on the other hand, most definitely has a tongue and he's not afraid to wield it against the beloved children's character. On a segment of Dobbs’ Fox Business Network show Tuesday night that was flagged by the advocacy group Media Matters, the cantankerous conservative pundit bashed two new animated movies as an example how Hollywood "once again is trying to indoctrinate our children.” Dobbs lambasted Disney's "The Secret World of Arrietty," a Japanese film that opened last Friday, for its story about...

I do not like this Uncle Sam I do not like his health care scam. I do not like these dirty crooks or how they lie and cook the books. I do not like when Congress steals. I do not like their secret deals. I do not like ex-speaker Nan. I do not like this "YES WE CAN." I do not like this spending spree. I'm smart, I know that nothing's free. I do not like their smug replies when I complain about their lies. I do not like this kind of hope. I do not like it. Nope, nope,...

One-hundred-and-fourth birthdays aren't usually much celebrated for authors who aren't alive anymore. But it seems an appropriately eccentric occasion to mark for the frankly fantabulous Theodor Seuss Geisel – rather better known as Dr Seuss – who came into the world on 2 March, 1904. Like generations of children I was weaned on his spry, jazzy tales, and now – when Uncle Lindesay steps up to put the kids to sleep with one of his famously thrilling bedtime stories – it's not just a nostalgic kick I'm getting out of the experience. They're still brilliant pieces of writing: as well...

This summer we enrolled our older one in a local half-day recreational camp. They use one of the public elementary schools in our town. As I was walking back through the hallway after dropping him off at the classroom, I stopped to notice this poster hanging on the wall: Note the URL at the bottom of the poster: Energystar.gov/kids. Dot-gov? Yup. This is a government-run—and therefore, taxpayer-funded—website that has evidently gotten together with whoever runs “Energy Star” and whoever owns the rights to Dr. Seuss’ “Lorax.” And lookie, the EPA is involved too! And you know if the EPA’s involved,...

I read "The Lorax" by Dr. Seuss yesterday evening to my 5-year-old. My wife had borrowed it from the library. I was expecting an amusing kid's book like "Green Eggs and Ham" (also by Seuss), but what I got was tiresome environmental, anti-business agit-prop. Ugh. Almost everyone on Amazon has given it 5 stars -- no wonder Obama is president. I think the language in the book is dumb, too. Why invent words like "biggerer" (used repeatedly) instead of using the word "bigger". It's too bad I need to screen children's books for political indoctrination. I wonder if there are...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report! If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash!

Saw a matinee of the new Horton Hears a Who movie. Is Hillary the inspiration for the Sour Kangaroo? She'll take that speck (containing a microscopic city) away from Horton...for the common good! Oh, and why would she do that? Well, it's "...for the children". I'm not kidding: actual dialogue! It's been stated before that "a person's a person, no matter how small" is a good argument for pro-life...AND maybe this film can have a subliminal political message: We may be doomed but THE ELEPHANT can save us! (At one point there's a bit of global COOLING in the movie,...

FORT HUACHUCA — There is one thing Command Sgt. Maj. Gerry Wykoff is thankful for, and that is Dr. Seuss never wrote an Army Field Manual. As it is, his children’s books are full of tongue twisters, as the senior noncommissioned officer for the Intelligence Center and Fort Huachuca found out Monday when he read Seuss’ “The Sleep Book,” to fourth-grade students of Janet Josa’s class at General Myer Elementary School. For many young school students, the Dr. Seuss books are today’s “See Spot Run” that older generations remember from their days in the lower grades of elementary education. Nationwide,...

Judge Makes 'Green Eggs and Ham' Ruling CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A federal judge was driven to rhyme after receiving a hard-boiled egg in the mail from a prison inmate protesting his diet. U.S. District Court Judge James Muirhead reached for Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" for inspiration after getting the egg from inmate Charles Jay Wolff. "I do not like eggs in the file," Muirhead wrote. "I do not like them in any style. I will not take them fried or boiled. I will not take them poached or broiled. I will not take them soft or scrambled/Despite...

Mom got a special present the Christmas, I think, when she had the first four grandchildren around: Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss, of course. It was the perfect gift, from my sister, who knew how much Mom would enjoy reading to the kids. Many years have passed and the rascals have grown. I imagine the book ended up in Mary's pre-K collection at St. Mary's. I had forgotten about it until we took our 15 1/2 year old baby to see Seussical the Musical the other night, which blends the two Horton plots with various other Seuss characters...

Hey moms and dads: Bet you don't know what Dr. Seuss really thought about his most famous book, The Cat in the Hat — the basis for this weekend's big movie opening. "I'm subversive as hell," Seuss once said. "The Cat in the Hat is a revolt against authority. ... It's revolutionary in that it goes as far as Kerensky, and then stops. It doesn't go quite as far as Lenin." Russian-history refresher: Alexander Kerensky was an ineffective revolutionary dictator who preceded Lenin. He wasn't a Commie, but he was a man of the far Left — and not exactly...

NEW YORK - "Green Eggs and Ham" is an easy read. After all, the late Theodore Geisel, belovedly known as Dr. Seuss, wrote it after his editor challenged him to do a book in just 50 words. But have you tried to read it in Latin? Retitled "Virent Ova! Viret Perna!!" the Seuss classic has been rendered into Latin by Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers Inc. of Wauconda, Ill. The target audience is "people who took Latin in school and have fond remembrance of it, teachers and students who take Latin — and, of course, Seuss fans," Kelly Hughes, a spokeswoman for the...
