"Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer announced Tuesday that his department will continue undercover bar stings targeting drunken drivers, but some changes were made to the program. The next operation is scheduled for Friday, which is St. Patrick's Day. Police have not yet determined which establishments will be monitored. Dyer said undercover officers will not be positioned inside bars or restaurants. They will only be outside the bars and in parking lots. The chief also said officers — preferably uniformed — will approach people who appear to be intoxicated to dissuade them from driving."

TAMPA - Florida law bars undocumented immigrants from obtaining driver's licenses, but in countless cases that doesn't keep them off the road. Arrests of unlicensed drivers by Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies rose 71 percent from 2001 to 2005. The agency doesn't track how many of those drivers were undocumented, but anecdotal evidence suggests those numbers are rising as more immigrants arrive. A high-profile accident is drawing attention to the issue: A Tampa police detective died in a crash Feb. 25 when one such driver ran a red light and plowed into the detective's city-owned car, the sheriff's office has...

See for example this thread first. Maryland might make your license plate read "DUI"--would be your fate if you've driven drunk. But--Darn it! That Skunk Ted Kennedy's in the wrong state!

Amid the flurry of big-deal bills whipping around the Capitol - same-sex marriage, driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, regulation of dietary supplements - it's the little ones, too, that bear notice. The little ones that promise to make our lives better. Or living hells. So here's a heads-up to the 35-year-old Sacramento woman, nailed by the California Highway Patrol last weekend for weaving down K Street, then turning her Volvo the wrong way onto 15th. Apparently too smashed to answer simple questions, the woman also had a suspended driver's license, having been convicted of driving under the influence four times...

Man convicted in teen's death arrested for drunken driving again IOWA CITY, Iowa A man who spent more than two years in prison for drunken driving after killing a teenage boy on a bicycle has been arrested again after a minor accident. Police say Lawrence Henning, of North Liberty, was given a field breath test after the accident on Thursday in North Liberty. Officers say Henning smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and had difficulty balancing. The blood-alcohol test at the scene showed a zero-point-one-six percent reading, twice Iowa's legal limit of zero-point-oh-eight. Henning, who is now 48, was convicted...

He has been involved in more than a dozen accidents and yet even after the elderly couple he hit died, Culp is still behind the wheel. What's worse, state...

RIDING THE RAIL Late-night rail service's fate riding on Metro evaluation Low ridership could spell end to 'last call' trains By LUCAS WALL Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Late-night bar patrons downtown might be running out of time to use the train as their designated driver. Metro is reviewing whether to continue late rail service on Friday and Saturday nights. The extended weekend hours began in June at the request of city officials and downtown businesses who hoped the availability of the rail ride might lure more customers. It hasn't happened. "Ridership has been disappointing, but Metro leadership is now working...

The light turned red just as Carlos Estudillo Pineda drove through the intersection, and within seconds the flashing blue lights were behind him. The Raleigh officer who pulled him over early one morning in September 2002 spotted three Bud Lite cans in the car's rear and smelled alcohol. Officer Mike Inguanta had Pineda perform the usual battery of sobriety tests, which the 27-year-old Chapel Hill man failed miserably. Walk nine steps in a straight line, turn around and walk back, Inguanta ordered. Pineda cried as he continued past nine steps without turning. Stand on one leg, Inguanta instructed. Pineda lifted...
