VIDEO AT LINK................... March 20 (UPI) -- An angler who found a camera in a Colorado river was able to retrieve the photos from the device and discovered it had been underwater for 13 years. Spencer Greiner said he was fishing recently in the Animas River when he spotted a camera at the bottom of the shallow water. "I was walking along and saw it sticking out of the sand," Greiner told KDVR-TV. "It was in rough shape, so I really didn't have any hopes of getting anything off of it, I was just planning to throw it away, and...

Farmers Fresh has been threatened with legal action.. Farmers Fresh Market supporters rallied outside the Ignacio grocery store Saturday in a show of support for the store’s free-choice mask-wearing policies. The store has received a legal warning from La Plata County authorities for flouting the state’s mandatory mask order. Gov. Jared Polis issued the executive order in July to help reduce coronavirus transmission. On Saturday, community members weighed in with a vote of support for Farmers Fresh. “I’m very, very thankful for it. I think now is the time to make your voice heard one way or another,” said Amos...

An unidentified man and woman suspected of committing theft and fraud in Durango and Cortez appear to have gone on a crime spree across the country. In early May, the Durango Police Department asked for the public’s help to identify a couple who allegedly stole a wallet from a woman’s purse on April 26 at Albertsons, then immediately went to Walmart and used a stolen credit card to buy $2,500 in merchandise and gift cards. The next day, the man and the woman are suspected of stealing a wallet from someone in Cortez and again went to Walmart to buy...

The Montezuma County Coroner’s Office is disputing the state’s claim of a third fatal case of the coronavirus in Cortez, saying the person died of alcohol poisoning. County Coroner George Deavers said the person tested positive for COVID-19, but an investigation by him and the pathologist determined the cause of death was ethanol toxicity. The person’s blood-alcohol content was 0.55, or almost seven times the legal driving limit of 0.08 in Colorado, Deavers said. A BAC of 0.3 is considered lethal. “COVID was not listed on the death certificate as the cause of death. I disagree with the state for...

town into homeless magnet By Joseph J. Kolb Published May 17, 2017 Fox News NOW PLAYING New poll shows shift on marijuana legalization From his sidewalk vantage point in front of an outdoor equipment store in downtown Durango, Colo., Matthew Marinseck has seen a transformation in this mountain resort town. The picturesque town near the New Mexico border, once a vibrant, upscale community dotted with luxury hotels, is being overrun by panhandlers – thanks, in part, to the legalization of marijuana. The town suddenly became a haven for recreational pot users, drawing in transients, panhandlers and a large number of...

DENVER—Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper’s big gulp of water from the formerly orange Animas River wasn’t just icky, it was “reckless and irresponsible,” said New Mexico’s top environmental official. New Mexico environment department secretary Ryan Flynn said Mr. Hickenlooper’s decision to fill up his water bottle from the site of the EPA’s 3-million-gallon wastewater spill in Durango, Colorado, sends the wrong message. “If it’s true, it’s a reckless and irresponsible act by a public official,” said Mr. Flynn in the Farmington (N.M.) Daily Times. “He might as well stick 15 cigarettes in his mouth and light them all at the same...

As furor builds over the EPA disaster in Durango, Colorado, I would like to propose a just solution. Given that the EPA is an unaccountable, job-killing, river-polluting behemoth, Congress ought to pass a ban on its onshore operations. Joking aside, while political figures try to brush this fiasco under the table without heads actually rolling or the EPA compensating taxpayers for the environmental damage it caused, the point should be made that the federal government should be held not just to an equal standard as private enterprise, but a higher one. After all, public servants are accountable to all of us. Private individuals are not. Yet Democratic Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper argues the...
  • 'They're not going to get away with this': Anger mounts at EPA over mining spill

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Anger was mounting Monday at the federal Environmental Protection Agency over the massive spill of millions of gallons of toxic sludge from a Colorado gold mine that has already fouled three major waterways and may be three times bigger than originally reported. An 80-mile length of mustard-colored water -- laden with arsenic, lead, copper, aluminum and cadmium -- is working its way south toward New Mexico and Utah, following Wednesday's accidental release from the Gold King Mine, near Durango, when an EPA cleanup crew destabilized a dam of loose rock lodged in the mine. The crew was...

Reuters) - Some 3 million gallons of toxic wastewater, triple previous estimates, have poured from a defunct Colorado gold mine into local streams since a team of Environmental Protection Agency workers accidentally triggered the spill last week, EPA officials said on Sunday. The discharge, containing high concentrations of heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury and lead, was continuing to flow at the rate of 500 gallons per minute on Sunday, four days after the spill began at the Gold King Mine, the EPA said. An unspecified number of residents living downstream of the spill who draw their drinking supplies from...

CannaCamp couldn't cultivate kush resort after national derision becomes a real downerA planned pot-friendly ranch resort in southwest Colorado has been snuffed before it opened. The 170-acre CannaCamp resort touted weed-friendly activities such as hiking and fishing. But a deal with the landowner fell through, and the marijuana-tourism company promoting CannaCamp announced Thursday that the resort won’t open after all. The MaryJane Group, which runs marijuana-friendly inns in Denver and Silverthorne, announced that it hopes to find a new home for CannaCamp by 2016. Guests who already booked stays starting at $395 per person per night are being offered stays...

LPEA customers oppose upcharge for visiting homes.. La Plata Electric Association ... A frequent comment was the impression that the switch from analog to Advanced Metering Infrastructure – or so-called smart meters – that started in late 2013 was done without informing customers. Several people said they learned about smart meters from neighbors or only because they were at home when an LPEA technician arrived to switch out the analog meter. The alleged secrecy eroded public trust, they said. About 300 LPEA customers have chosen not to have the latest meter-reading technology installed. A number of speakers cited health problems,...

A group called Colorado Accountability has been threatening the recall for two weeks. Organizers now have about two months to collect 10,586 valid signatures from voters in McLachlan’s House District 59. “This is their right to petition to recall me. I look forward to a full discussion of the issues,” McLachlan said. He didn’t want to comment further until he saw the official petition. The secretary of state’s office will work with Colorado Accountability to make sure the petition is formatted properly. After that,...

This 1957 western features decorated WWII vets and patriots Jimmy Stewart and Audie Murphy as brothers on the opposite sides of the law. I miss patriotic, pro-American actors like Stewart and Murphy. Also features, Hugh Beaumont(a/k/a Ward Cleaver, one of TV's best on-screen dads) as a railroad tycoon.
