Fact or Fiction? broken earth cartoon FACT: Earthquakes are sudden rolling or shaking events caused by movement under the Earth’s surface. An earthquake is the ground shaking caused by a sudden slip on a fault. Stresses in the earth's outer layer push the sides of the fault together. Stress builds up and the rocks slip suddenly, releasing energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel during an earthquake. Faults are caused by the tectonic plates grinding and scraping against each other as they continuously and slowly move. In California, for example, there...

A powerful earthquake struck near remote Japanese islands and shook most of the country Saturday evening, but it occurred well beneath the earth's surface and did not trigger a tsunami warning. Two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and there were no reports of major damage. The magnitude-8.5 offshore quake struck off the Ogasawara islands at a depth of 590 kilometres, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 7.8 and a depth of 678 kilometres. The temblor was powerful enough to rattle most of Japan, from the southern islands of Okinawa to Hokkaido...

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck 194 kilometres off Japan's coast, according to United States Geological Survey (USGS), but there were no immediate reports of damage, public broadcaster NHK said. The quake, which hit off Japan's Bonin Islands, reportedly rocked buildings in Tokyo as it built in intensity about 8:30pm local time (9:30pm AEST). The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said: "There is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth." The USGS reported the epicentre was approximately 874 kilometres south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean, while the Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake had...

REDDING (CBS SF) – An earthquake with magnitude of 5.1 was reported but never hit the Redding area overnight. The United States Geological Survey reported the quake just after midnight, seven miles outside of Lewiston, just under Buckeye Ridge at Clair Engle Lake. But the Associated Press confirmed Friday morning that this was a “…erroneous alert based off an earthquake that struck in Alaska.” The event record of the California quake has since vanished from the USGS seismic activity map. As of 9 a.m., the computer algorithm used to automatically “write” earthquake stories for the Los Angeles Times continued to...

The 24-minute-long earthquake prophecy video, which has now been watched by over half-a-million people, predicts a massive 9.8 earthquake will hit California at 4pm local time on 28 May. The clip published by Frank Hoogerbeets, the founder and president of Ditrianum Media, claims he was able to assess the 'horrific' event using a computer program called Solar System Scope. The Huffington Post UK citing Hoogerbeets noted that his theory was based on the calculation that the 9.8 quake will strike when "no less than five planetary alignments will converge with the Earth." Admit it, there's nothing more fun than sitting in a dark theatre, munching on a bucket of buttery popcorn, and watching the Earth get demolished. In the latest round of catastrophic flicks, California is destroyed as the famous San Andreas Fault unleashes unimaginable (and unrealistic) devastation across the state. The new film, San Andreas, depicts the rupture of an unknown fault near the Hoover Dam in Nevada, which gets the destructive ball rolling by setting off powerful earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault. And although earthquakes are nothing new to Californians, and pose serious threats along the famous fault, Hollywood...

U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough accompanied The Associated Press to an advance screening of the film. Despite the implausible plot, she said the San Andreas will indeed break again, and without warning. "We are at some point going to face a big earthquake," she said. The San Andreas is notorious for producing big ones, but a magnitude-9 or larger is virtually impossible because the fault is not long or deep enough, Hough noted. The most powerful temblors in recorded history have struck along offshore subduction zones where one massive tectonic plate dives beneath another. The 1960 magnitude-9.5 quake off...

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake (originally reported 5.4) shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning causing roads and bridges to be closed. The quake went little-reported outside of local news (since there was at first glance minimum damage caused) but, since the quake's occurrence, something considerably more worrisome has occurred. In the 36 hours since the quake's occurrence, water levels at Lake Mead have plunged precipitously. While we know correlation is not causation, the 'coincidence' of an extreme loss in water levels occurring in the aftermath of one of the largest quakes in recent Vegas history does raise a suspicious...

The U.S. Geological Survey indicated the magnitude-5.7 tremor was strong enough to inflict significant damage on poorly constructed buildings. It was felt in northern India. Neither injuries nor deaths have been reported, possibly because so many structures were already toppled by the April 25 magnitude-7.8 earthquake that killed more than 8,000 people and injured more than 19,000. The region was hit Tuesday by a quake that killed over 125 people and injured over 2,500.

In the evening, Lucas and I walked down our street and into a village, the oldest community of ethnic Newars in the Katmandu Valley, a place where goats often live on the ground floor of homes and women wash their pots and their hair on the stoops. Making our way along the town’s narrow, medieval paths, we passed building after building that had collapsed. Residents, police officers and Nepal Scouts were digging through the debris with their hands, trying to rescue those who had been buried. Others were setting up temporary shelters in any open space. Blankets and cushions were...

The family of mountaineering great, the late Sir Edmund Hillary, say he'd be horrified and saddened by the devastating earthquake in Nepal. New Zealand and Nepal have developed a close relationship over the years, mainly through the work of Sir Ed. His son, Peter, was in Nepal when the powerful magnitude 7.8 quake struck on Saturday evening New Zealand time. The quake, centered outside the capital, Kathmandu, killed more than 1,900 people and destroyed infrastructure, homes and historical buildings. Images of Nepal in ruins would have devastated Sir Ed. To us he was the mountaineer who conquered Mt Everest, but...

When the earthquake hit, many of Nepal's most renowned pagodas in and around Kathmandu crumbled into rubble-covered stumps. Others were smothered under splintered hand-carved wooden beams or multi-level rooftops. But the Kathmandu Valley's other pagodas, stupas and shrines -- also built mostly of red brick hundreds of years ago -- suffered surprisingly little damage and remained standing next to structures which disappeared.
