A strong earthquake hit northern Japan near Sendai city on Monday, causing house fires in the downtown area and rocking buildings as far away as Tokyo 302 kilometres to the south. There was no immediate reports on casualties. Seismologists said the quake measured seven on the open-ended Richter scale.
