We saw Jersey Boys last night in our local movie theatre. It is the story of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons, a singing group of the 1960s, and their rise to fame. It is an adaptation of a stage play. The movie is directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, which is eyebrow raising in itself because it does not seem like a typical Eastwood topic. I approached this movie with some trepidation because of the big, fat R after the title. Normally, I avoid R-rated movies; and I could not find out why it received this rating. However, the...

It is hard to know whether to be outraged or grateful that President Obama has decided to skip the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s famous speech at Gettysburg this week. He’s sending his secretary of the Interior (who?), when even Attorney General Eric Holder would be more appropriate. It is not Obama’s first act of diffidence or disdain for American icons; think of his casual and intermittent relationship with the American flag pin on his lapel, for example, along with some of his overseas pronouncements tacitly attesting to his ambition to embody some kind of “post-American” ethos to go along with...

So why in the name of “Gigli” would Mitt Romney’s campaign — er, Karl Rove’s American Crossroads superPAC – dust off Clint Eastwood to make a campaign commercial touting Mitt? Her work in the celebrated "Dreamgirls" didn't make that happen, nor did appearances in "The Pink Panther," "Obsessed" or "Austin Powers in Goldmember." Clint Eastwood could have changed all that. However, the fact that the pundit class is still critiquing it days later is one indicator of how shrewd it was as political theater. Accordingly, it is worth noting just how wrong some of the Eastwood analysis has been, even from those defending the speech.
