The General's Eggnog One quart of cream One quart of milk A dozen eggs One pint of brandy A half pint of rye A quarter pint of rum A quarter pint of sherry Christmas of 1826 was snowy, cold and lonely for the cadets of West Point. Though called "men" they were really teenage boys -- some as young as 17 -- and they wanted to celebrate Christmas. Young Jefferson Davis, future president of the Confederate States of America, was amongst them. But West Point then, as it is now, was a house of order and discipline. The military...

What's your favorite brand of eggnog? I'm looking for a new one. Every year about this time I go pick up a couple half gallons of Original Recipe Alta Dena Eggnog. Well, I missed out last year, the stores stopped carrying it immediately after Christmas. Yesterday I went on their website and looked for it, and saw it's been replaced by their "Holiday" Eggnog. First ingredient is non fat milk, so I emailed them asking if they had just relabeled it, or if they had discontinued the original. They were kind enough to get back to me with this: "Both...
  • You've Had Eggnog With Bourbon, But Have You Tried it With Beer?

If there is one thing that eggnog lovers and eggnog haters have in common, it’s this: you HAVE to try it homemade. It’s an entirely new culinary creation once that yellow carton is removed. Once a nog-hater myself, I was hooked after one swig of the homemade version. This stuff is delicious. When you make this from scratch, you get the true impact: this is a glass of drinkable boozed-up ice cream. With a ingredient list like “cream, milk, eggs, sugar, booze,” there really isn’t anything not to fall in love with. As long as take the ten minutes and...

  • Rockefeller microbiologist tests safety of spiked eggnog

With one in every 20,000 eggs contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, drinking homemade eggnog can be something of a gamble. But an experiment designed to test whether the alcohol in spiked eggnog can kill the deadly bugs suggests that, in general, few bacteria survive in a mixture containing both raw eggs and 20 percent rum and bourbon. The experiment, which was done by Rockefeller University professor Vincent A. Fischetti at the request of National Public Radio’s Science Friday program, compared the bacteria found in homemade alcoholic eggnog with those found in store-bought nonalcoholic nog. After culturing samples of both solutions and...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A massive winter storm blanketed the US West Coast with snow, sleet and ice early Monday while blizzards and snow squalls struck the Northeast and Midwest, killing at least four people and making travel dangerous. The storm snarled holiday air traffic across the country, with delays at major airports in San Francisco; Houston, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; New Jersey and New York, officials said. The fierce weather was blamed for the death of two people in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate Highway 80 east of Des Moines, Iowa. Another weather-related fatality was reported in northwest Iowa when a...

A staged shootout during a mock train robbery Sunday in Random Lake turned out to be far too realistic when two people were shot with a gun mistakenly loaded with birdshot, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department. The incident occurred about 11 a.m. as re-enactors were performing the simulated train robbery as part of the weekend-long Santa Steam Train event, said Capt. Dave Adams. The re-enactment unfolded with the actors engaging in a simulated shootout with police on Second Street near Harris Bank, after pretending to steal dynamite from a local hardware store for use in robbing the train,...

MURRIETA, Calif. — As four vintage military planes soared above the second annual Veterans Day parade here last month, all eyes turned skyward. Suddenly, one plane veered west, alone. The empty space where the plane had flown was a tribute to those who've died in defense of freedom. Eyes misted over. Young parents snapped pictures. Old men saluted. Mayor Jack van Haaster commemorated the somber fly-by: "We give tribute to those whose lives were lost in service to their country." Then he clambered into a shiny convertible to lead high school bands and candy-tossing Marines, car clubs and Scout troops...

I want to share with all my fellow FReepers the recipe for what is probably the the greatest egg nog recipe ever. If you are a non drinker, move along, there is nothing to see here. If you are a drinker, even a heavy one, be very careful with this. It is a first cousin to rocket fuel. Warning: this is a pain in the neck to make. It will take you a long time, about an hour and a half, but the results are well worth it. You will even make converts out of prople who are not egg ...

Fruitcake: treasured Christmas tradition or hefty holiday menace? That's a question you've probably answered for yourself. Here's a harder one: Why did eating fruitcake become a holiday tradition in the first place? Or drinking eggnog for that matter? Or buying poinsettias? We all know why we do these things. We do them because, well, because we've always done them ... Oh, all right, we don't have a clue why we do them. Who has the time to research that? We do. So sit back and have some eggnog as we answer these and other holiday questions you may have wondered...
