Have we lost ye, Michele Bachmann? The answer would seem to be yes, as the sharp-tongued, googly-eyed Minnesota Congresswoman suspended her presidential campaign after receiving only five per cent of the Iowa Caucus vote in the state where she was born. To put that in perspective, Michele Bachmann only got 6,000 more votes in Iowa than Johann Sebastian Bach. It was the culmination of a stunning turn of events over the past few months, after her candidacy surged when she won the Iowa straw poll in August. Soon afterwards, however, her poll numbers went south faster than General William Tecumseh...

Jerry Leiber, one of the most important songwriters in the history of rock & roll – whose 60-year partnership with Mike Stoller produced "Stand By Me," "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Young Blood," "On Broadway," "Yakety-Yak" and countless other classics – has died of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78. "When Jerry and I started to write, we were writing to amuse ourselves," Stoller told Rolling Stone in 1990. "It was done out of a love of doing it. We got very lucky in the sense that at some point what we wrote also amused a lot of other people." Leiber met...

"Before we get started, let's all say happy birthday to Elvis Presley today!" Bachmann said.

Remembering the 'King,' 34 Years Later : Elvis Presley (1935 - 1967) On Aug. 16, 1977 the music world was shocked when the King of Rock 'n Roll died at the young age of 42. By then, Elvis had appeared in 33 films, won a Grammy Lifetime Achievment Award (at just 36 years old!) and had served his country in the U.S. Army. 34 years later after his sudden death, fans are still flocking to his Graceland...

On the city's website, visitors can pick one of 12 locations to be renamed after Elvis, including street crossings and a site at the foot of Margaret Bridge, which spans the Danube River. Voting ends on March 15. During Elvis' last appearance on...

The repeated delays and contradictory statements about the two Iranian warships' transit of the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean is accounted for by a standoff between the Iranian flotilla and five US warships deployed in recent days at the waterway's southern entrance and along its course, debkafile's sources disclose. Thursday night, Feb. 17, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, escorted by missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf and the fast supply ship USNS Arctic, headed south through the canal. By Friday morning, they were through and taking up position opposite the Kharg cruiser and Alvand missile destroyer of the Iranian Navy's 12th...

The musical act that has scored the most songs on the Billboard Hot 100 is not Elvis, Michael Jackson, or The Beatles. It's the cast of Glee, reports the AP, which is an amazing achievement considering the act first appeared on the charts only 18 months ago. In that time, Glee has achieved the record of having more songs on the 52-year old Billboard chart in history -- a total of 113 hit songs. Glee debuted six new songs on the chart this week alone, pulling five songs ahead of Elvis Presley, who had 108 hit songs.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born on Tuesday, January 8, 1935 in East Tupelo, Mississippi. In September 1948 when Elvis was 13, he and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating from Humes High School in Memphis, Elvis took odd jobs working as a movie theater usher and a truck driver for Crown Electric Company. He began singing locally as "The Hillbilly Cat", then signed with a local recording company, then in 1955 with RCA. He did much to establish early rock and roll music, bringing black blues singing into the white, teenage mainstream. Teenage girls became hysterical over his...

A copy of ELVIS PRESLEY's will, which was discovered in a trash can, is expected to fetch up to $1,500 (£1,000) when it goes under the hammer this weekend (13Nov10). A law firm employee kept the document after finding it in an office garbage bin during a clear-out in 1987, a decade after the Jailhouse Rock hitmaker died. The paperwork will be auctioned off alongside a lock of Presley's hair and a scarf once worn by the singer at the Henry Aldridge & Son sale in Wiltshire, England on Saturday (13Nov10). Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge says, "The will gives a fascinating...

The TSA chose Meg McLain for special screening. They wanted her to go through the new porno-scanners. When she opted out, TSA agents raised an enormous ruckus. When she asked some question about what they planned to do to her, they flipped out. TSA agents yelled at her, handcuffed her to a chair, ripped up her ticket, called in 12 local Miami cops and finally escorted her out of the airport. Listen to her story as she told it on radio show Free Talk Live last night. Things are truly getting scary.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A re-styled version of the Elvis Presley hit "Suspicious Minds" hit radio stations on Monday, part of an album being released later this year featuring newer, more contemporary takes on many of his hits. "Suspicious Minds" is the first single off "Viva Elvis-The Album," set for mass release Nov. 9. The 12-track compilation is a companion piece to the Las Vegas show "Viva Elvis" by Cirque du Soleil, which began in February. The new "Suspicious Minds" and the other reworked songs on the album could strike a dissonant chord with Elvis’ older fans. But the minds behind...

Good news for Elvis Presley's creepiest fans, as a set of tools from the singer's autopsy are to be auctioned next month... are among the items that will come under the hammer at what is perhaps the grisliest sale in rock'n'roll history. According to a spokeswoman for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, a senior embalmer at the Memphis Funeral Home set the tools aside after Presley's 1977 funeral, waiting decades before deciding to sell to the highest bidder. "The mortician, who prepared the body, retained this tag and the instruments, along with the preparation room case report, the case sheet, dry cleaning...

LOS ANGELES — Competition to provide passenger train service between Southern California and Las Vegas is heating up, even though the last such effort to carry fun-seekers across the Mojave Desert was derailed by a lack of customers. For years, backers of a proposed magnetically levitating train running from Disneyland to Las Vegas have traded barbs with a rival project that would take tourists from the California desert town of Victorville to the Strip on a high-speed train dubbed DesertXpress. The "maglev" supporters call DesertXpress the train to nowhere because it wouldn't fully reach Southern California's population centers. Privately funded...

LONDON: Elvis Presley's death has been the subject of many conspiracy theories with some believing that years of drug misuse led to the end of the 'King of Rock N Roll'. But according to Nick George Nichopoulos, Elvis's doctor for the last 12 years of his life, the singer died of chronic constipation, which was also responsible for his drastic weight gain in the years before his death. The doctor, who attempted to resuscitate Elvis on the day of his death, said that it wasn't until the autopsy that he realised how severe the constipation had been, Daily Mail reported...

It wasn't a heart condition that killed the King of Rock 'n' Roll, it was chronic constipation. This is the new theory of Elvis Presley's longtime friend Dr. George Nichopoulos, Fox News reported on Wednesday. "We weren't sure [of the exact cause of death] so I continued to do some research," said Nichopoulos, who was also the personal physician to the legendary singer. "I had some doctors call me from different places and different med schools that were doing research on constipation and different problems you can get into with it." Nichopoulos, who was with Elvis when he died, included...

It has been widely reported that Elvis Presley died in 1977 from cardiac arrhythmia, an irregular heartbeat, possibly brought on by drug dependency, obesity and a weak heart. But the music legend's longtime friend and physician, Dr. George “Nick” Nichopoulos, has put pen to paper for the first time and revealed his belief that it was chronic constipation that actually killed the King of Rock and Roll.

Crystal Bowersox could easily be voted 'Most Likely to Win" this year's season of American Idol. Ryan Seacrest who hosts the show, mentioned that not long ago Crystal was thinking of leaving the show because 'what's the point?' Exactly. In the overall scheme of things, what is the point? It seems Miss Bowersox has dug deep and come up with the answer. If it's possible, make a difference. Make a real difference. Don't just sing another song. Don't just impress the judges, or win the crowd. When given a platform, and a golden opportunity, make the most of it. Last...

Mad About Obamacare? Blame BushBy Philip Klein on 3.21.10 @ 11:27PM They did it. Despite an overwhelming public backlash and the likely political ramifications, Democrats cut deals and twisted arms and got the votes they needed, winning by a 219 to 212 margin. While the reconciliation process still remains, it’s a sideshow at this point. The United States is a presidential signature away from having national health care. Suffice it to say, as somebody who has spent the past year working to expose the devastating consequences of this legislation and who values individual liberty, this is a sad day....

Had an interesting conversation this morning with a fellow conservative. We were discussing the decline of American culture and agreed on a turning point: 1956 In 1956, our youth was tired of WWII and wanted something new and fun. Then, Elvis Presley appeared like a bolt of lightning. Elvis was not Hollywood smooth, or elite or cultured. He was different from Sinatra, Crosby and Lanza - he ushered in a new music sound with a rebellious, cheeky attitude. In contrast, the private Elvis was a religious young man who loved his parents, his Country, black gospel music and dutifully completed...

OK. Elvis Presley would have been 75 today. Inquiring minds want to know: Would he have voted Republican or Democrat?

A few curious facts for the new to Elvis: Elvis Aaron Presley was born January 8, 1935 in a little house in Tupelo, Mississippi. He had a stillborn brother Jesse Garon Presley. There was no doctor yet present during the birth and Elvis' parents put him in a shoebox in the oven to keep him warm. His real hair color as an adult was dark blond. His eyes were extremely blue.He was shockingly different for the 50's and stunningly talented: Heartbreak Hotel Elvis was one of the most beautiful (I would argue THE most beautiful person) ever photographed. Men and...

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll would have been 75 years old today. A gyrating young truck driver, who blended “Hillbilly” and “Blues” turned the world of music upside down when he burst onto the national scene in 1956. Music would never be the same. America would never be the same. The world would never be the same.

As many in the world focused on international climate talks and an attack on the Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, France remained transfixed by the news that a beloved and aging French rock star known as the French Elvis was in a medically induced coma in a Los Angeles hospital. Long-awaited news about President Nicolas Sarkozy’s plan to invest in universities and new businesses received far less coverage in most news media than the news about the singer, Johnny Hallyday. Even Le Monde, one of France’s most serious newspapers, weighed in with an editorial bemoaning the rocker’s illness, saying it...

A friend of mine once called it Elvis Disease. Occasionally an individual will become so powerful, that he forgets he is mortal. (It’s what happened to Marlon Brando’s character in “Apocalypse Now.“) Because when a human becomes so important that people confuse him with a god, he might start believing it himself. When Elvis came out of the dressing room for the first time in that sequined white jumpsuit with elephant bells, high collar, and a matching cape, he asked the people he thought were friends, “Ahh , what d’yall think? Ahh picked it for my Hawaii show…” But everyone...

Today is the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, who died on August 16, 1977. Elvis died of a life of excess and drug abuse at the absurdly young age of 42. He had been a superstar for more than 20 years by the time he died, entombed in his own celebrity. When Elvis, Scotty and Bill found their way to the heart of American music with their recording of "That's Alright, Mama," they (and Sun Records owner/producer Sam Phillips) knew they had done something special. Elvis found the heart of America -- the place where country, blues, and...

Rod Blagojevich performed Elvis Presley's "Treat Me Nice" during a Chicago appearance, a publicist for the disgraced former Illinois governor says. Publicist Glenn Selig confirmed Blagojevich performed the song during a paid appearance Friday at the 14th annual block party for the Chicago company Optimus, the Chicago Tribune reported. Optimus President Tom Duff said Blagocevich, who faces federal charges after being removed from office in January amid corruption allegations, practiced with a backing track for days prior to his performance. "He was waffling between two different songs" before settling on 'Treat Me Nice,'" Duff told the Tribune. At least one...

The death hadn't even been confirmed, the body not yet cold, before the comparisons were being made. The passing of Michael Jackson reignited the occasional debate about the King of Pop and Elvis Presley, "The King" of rock 'n' roll. In the hours after Jackson's passing, Canadian songbird Celine Dion claimed it felt "like when (President John) Kennedy died, when Elvis Presley died. We are not only talking about a talented person dying, it's an amazing loss." The articles analyzing the similarities between Jackson and Presley have been ubiquitous and inevitable. Even Billboard magazine editorial director Bill Werde declared, "The...

Whether or not people are driven to denounced the obvious death of Presley because they love his records or movies or any other variation thereof is moot; the point is that some people find themselves predisposed to deny factual evidence (e.g.: death certificate, accounts of people who handled the body, the funeral, the burying of the coffin). Instead, they cling to fantastic, non-realistic, evidence that Elvis still lives, which can be found in reported cryptic songs by Waylon Jennings, crazy theory books, movies, and, of course, the person on the street that swears that Elvis just pumped their gas and...

He Knew. Years ago Michael and I were having a deep conversation about life in general. I can't recall the exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my Fathers Death. At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, "I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did." I promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me...
