The adolescent soccer players trapped for two weeks in a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand don't want their parents to worry. And they also wouldn't mind having some fried chicken ready for when they get home. That's what's on the minds of the 12 boys, ages 11-16, according to handwritten notes they sent out with divers who made an 11-hour, back-and-forth journey to act as postmen. The boys and their 25-year-old coach have been trapped since June 23, when they went exploring in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave after a practice game. Monsoon flooding cut off their escape...

A former Thai navy diver who joined in search efforts to rescue 12 boys and their coach trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand has died. Saman Kunan, 38, lost consciousness on his way out of the Tham Luang cave complex after delivering supplies to the missing group, officials said. He could not be revived by his colleagues. The diver had previously left the navy but had returned to help rescue operations. "A former SEAL who volunteered to help died last night around 2am," Chiang Rai Deputy Governor Passakorn Boonyaluck told reporters at the rescue site. "His job was to...

Paris (CNN)In pain too agonizing for her to describe, a young woman calls emergency services. "I'm going to die," she says. "You will die, certainly, one day," the phone operator replies, "like everyone else." A few hours later, the woman -- 22-year-old Naomi Musenga -- dies. And now, officials in France have launched an investigation into why her call wasn't taken more seriously. The incident happened in the city of Strasbourg in northeastern France in December. However, there's new interest in the case after a recording of the call surfaced. "We are waiting for justice to be done ... to...

The Turkish Parliament on Wednesday extended the ongoing state of emergency for another three months, the Hurriyet daily newspaper reported. This is the seventh time that the state of emergency has been extended. The last time was in January. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the three-month state of emergency on July 20, 2016, five days after the failed coup that summer, saying it would enable authorities to take swift action against those responsible for the putsch. Wednesday’s extension means the upcoming early elections on June 24 will be held under the emergency rule despite widespread disapproval from opposition parties. The...

My phones are ringing off the hooks with robocalls from smug politicians telling me that it's going to snow tomorrow. (I listened to the first ten seconds of the first call.) So far my town and my county, judging by the caller-ids, have called. (Their system isn't sophisticated enough to recognize that they are calling duplicate addresses so I get two of each of these annoying calls.) How stupid do these people think we are? What do they think we all did before they had their "emergency phone system"? ML/NJ

The night that Stephen Paddock opened fire on thousands of people at a Las Vegas country music concert, nearby Sunrise Hospital received more than 200 penetrating gunshot wound victims. Dr. Kevin Menes was the attending in charge of the ED that night, and thanks to his experience supporting a local SWAT team, he’d thought ahead about how he might mobilize his department in the event of a mass casualty incident. When it comes to natural disasters, probably everyone is thinking of Hurricane Harvey and its destruction in and around Houston. In addition to that devastation, there are also wildfires raging in southern California and Montana (hundreds of people have had to evacuate). Aside from those terrible disasters, most people don't spend much time thinking about chemical spills, blizzards, tornados, riots, or terrorist attacks. Now that I have your attention, are you taking steps to protect yourself and family in the wake of a disaster?

This morning was not a good start to New Years week. I decided to go horseback riding, something I haven't done in many years, and which Mrs. Chandler warned me was not a good idea, but I refused to let her hold me back. It turned out to be a big mistake! I got on the horse and started out slowly, but then we went a little faster; and before I knew it, we were going as fast as the horse could go. I couldn't take the pace and fell off, but caught my foot in the stirrup with the...
