The Associated Press reported that, "President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency, giving his health chief the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect non-infected patients." Health authorities say more than 1,000 people in the United States, including almost 100 children, have died from the strain of flu known as H1N1, and 46 states have widespread flu activity. "Many millions" of Americans have had swine flu so far, according to an estimate that CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden gave Friday. The government doesn't test everyone to confirm swine flu so...

According to the CDC, swine flu infections have already peaked, and the pandemic is on its way out. Peak infection time was the middle of October, where one in five U.S. children experienced the flu, says the CDC. Out of nearly 14,000 suspected flu cases tested during the week ending on October 10, 2009, 99.6% of those were influenza A, and the vast majority of those were confirmed as H1N1 swine flu infections. Even though the H1N1 pandemic appears to have peaked out, U.S. President Barack Obama has now declared a national emergency over swine flu infections. The reasoning behind...

President Obama announced today that he has a declared a "national emergency" over the H1N1 virus, a phrase with an ominous sound, but with little explanation offered by the mainstream media. The Associated Press, for example, merely stated that the declaration removes "bureaucratic roadblocks" and enables officials to "bypass federal rules." Other news outlets were even vaguer, saying the declaration waived federal requirements, but not saying what those requirements govern. In the void of information, Internet rumors were quick to flame, centering on concerns over how the Obama administration might use the declared emergency to suddenly expand government power. "Obama...

US President Barack Obama has declared swine flu a national emergency. The White House said the president signed the proclamation concerning the 2009 H1N1 outbreak on Friday evening. President Obama signed a proclamation declaring the H1N1 influenza a national emergency, giving doctors and medical facilities greater leeway in responding to the flu pandemic. Obama signed the declaration late Friday, which the White House said allows medical treatment facilities to better handle a surge in flu patients by waiving federal requirements on a case-by-case basis. "The foundation of our national approach to the H1N1 flu has been preparedness at all levels -- personal, business, and government -- and this proclamation helps that effort by advancing our overall response capability," the White House said in a statement. In the proclamation,...

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency and empowered his health secretary to suspend federal requirements and speed treatment for thousands of infected people. We have had a number of open discussions here at FR for quite some time about the importance of personal emergency preparedness. Many of us have taken an interest in this subject for a long time, and have been working steadfastly toward being prepared for a real emergency, and this evening I thought I would share my progress on one phase of our plan, food. Anyone who knows anything about preparedness will tell you that the first thing you should do is make a plan that fits your personal needs. A bachelor has much different survival needs than a family...

Obama's action allows Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements" to help health care facilities enact emergency plans to deal with the pandemic. Those requirements are contained in Medicare, Medicaid and state Children's Health Insurance programs, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy rule.

In a move that has the Plantiffs "amazingly overjoyed," Judge David O. Carter has turned down the Government’s motion for Dismissal in the case of Barnett vs. Obama. "This is a victory for democracy and the people of America," Rancho Santa Margarita-based attorney Orly Taitz said after this morning’s early meeting in the Judge’s offices. "This means that, come January, the President of the United States will be forced to come into this same courtroom and explain his massive fraud to the American people." Taitz represents Capt. Pamela Barnett and other military officers who question orders from the commander in...

But don't worry. Obama would only take over the internet in an "emergency." Then why does it make me uneasy that this Chicago Way pol gets to define what an "emergency" might be? Declan McCullagh writing for CNET: They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. The new version would allow...

I have participated in some limited discussions here at FR about preparedness issues and I have always found the responses to be extremely helpful, so I thought a focused discussion issue would be appropriate. What is an adequate level of preparedness when it comes to First Aid?? Where do you strike an acceptable balance that is right for your situation, fits your budget and fits your personal skills and comfort level? When it comes to preparedness issues, the first thing any expert tells you is to make a plan that fits your needs and personal situation. A retired couple has...

"Our entire emergency management team has a role to play when it comes to preparing for and responding to the next disaster," said Administrator Fugate. "One of the most important parts of that team is the public. The more prepared the public is now, by getting an emergency response kit, making an emergency action plan, and getting a skill, like CPR, the stronger our emergency response team will be."

California declared a state of emergency to tackle the swine flu outbreak on Tuesday as authorities said they were investigating two deaths in Los Angeles for possible links to the disease. "I can guarantee you from my own experience resolutions don't get stronger, they get weaker as time goes on." Bolton said the most troubling aspect of the launch is the tepid response by the Obama administration. He said...

Be Prepared for "Extraordinary Circumstances" The last words you want to see in an appropriations bill from Congress are the words "in case of an emergency" or their twin sister "in the event of extraordinary circumstances". When you see those words it is a near certainty that an "emergency" or that "extraordinary circumstances" are right around the corner. Please consider U.S. panel backs FDIC borrowing. A key U.S. Senate panel on Tuesday backed proposals to reform credit card practices and increase the authority of regulators to borrow from the Treasury Department to deal with a slew of expected bank failures....

Our colleague Gun Rights Examiner Daniel White had recently posted an observant piece about comparing gun owners to Paramedics and field EMS. Dan wrote how citizens act in emergency, and many emergency professionals believe the person turning in the alarm and acting on behalf of another, as in cases of first aid or CPR until the assets arrive, is the first link in the chain of emergency care. It’s textbook. This morning, I learned of a news report about how a high school student was entering class to find his teacher choking on some food. He administered the Heimlich Maneuver...

Booming preparedness industry says Americans are stockpiling To some, the term "survivalist" conjures images of camouflage-clad men stockpiling freeze-dried food in a mountain cabin, but in the current economic crisis, the people quietly preparing to survive catastrophe may just be your next-door neighbors. In his column in last month's Financial Times, business and technology expert Ade McCormack writes, "The world is in crisis and with it the world of business. Many of us have two plans. Plan A involves President Barack Obama performing some economic magic. Plan B involves a revolver, a vegetable patch and a subscription to Survivalist Monthly."...

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases...

Doubts increase over Barack Obama's ambitious spending promises Suzy Jagger in New York Barack Obama is expected to spend so much propping up the world’s biggest economy in 2009 that the national debt will balloon by an astonishing $2 trillion (£1.36 billion). BAGHDAD — Iraqis have been able to take charge and save lives thanks to their Advanced First Responder Network (AFRN). AFRN works the same way the ‘911’ emergency phone service does in the United States, except they dial ‘104’ here. The network has now expanded across the Al Anbar region, decreasing the amount of preventable deaths across Iraq. Installed in 15 major cities, more than 18 million people have access to the system. “Baghdad leaders depend on this network,” said Iraqi Maj. Gen. Saad, Ministry of...
