President Macron used his new year’s message to denounce the yellow-vest movement as a “hate-filled crowd” at odds with democratic French values. In a televised address to the nation Mr Macron accused the movement, which has caused havoc over the past month, of being liars, violent, antisemitic, homophobic and racist. He said that the movement’s self-proclaimed leaders were “the spokespeople of a hate-filled crowd attacking elected representatives, the forces of law and order, journalists, Jews, foreigners, homosexuals. That is simply the negation of France. I have recently seen things that are unthinkable and heard the unacceptable.” Mr Macron said that...

The United States and Israel officially quit the U.N.’s educational, scientific and cultural agency at the stroke of midnight, the culmination of a process triggered more than a year ago amid concerns that the organization fosters anti-Israel bias. The withdrawal is mainly procedural yet serves a new blow to UNESCO, co-founded by the U.S. after World War II to foster peace. The Trump administration filed its notice to withdraw in October 2017 and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu followed suit. The Paris-based organization has been denounced by its critics as a crucible for anti-Israel bias: blasted for criticizing Israel’s occupation...

British interior minister Sajid Javid has said the fast-growing number of would-be immigrants crossing the English Channel from France in dinghies is a “major incident.” Nearly 70 people have been intercepted in the past three days as they try to reach England by crossing one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes. […] The Member of Parliament for Dover on England’s southeast coast, Charlie Elphicke, has called for more government funding to deal with the arrivals and the Home Office said Javid has asked border officials to look at options for bringing in extra patrol ships. …

The state broadcaster SVT’s coverage of the double murder of 24-year-old Louisa Vesterager Jespersen and 28-year-old Maren Ueland by Islamists in Morocco has sparked a fury of criticism. Besides running an article that the savage murder of the two Scandinavian girls “had nothing to do with Islam”, they also pushed the narrative that sharing the graphic video of the murder is illegal, warning Swedes not to share the video as that is punishable with up to four years imprisonment. Scores of viewers complained that SVT was more concerned by people sharing the video of the killing, than they were with...

No matter what Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg posts on Facebook these days, the comments are negative. People argue that the signing of the UN Migration Pact in Marrakesh was a stab in the back of the nation. They also rage against Erna’s media handling of the murder of Maren Ueland, which they believe was a pure jihad-slaughter. “A PM who ignores her own people, who is totally absent when a young Norwegian girl is murdered in the most bestial way. And who chose not to lift a finger to secure her people at a time when we actually needed...

Lawmakers from Germany’s grand coalition government said on Wednesday that they were considering introducing a “mosque tax” for German Muslims, similar to the church taxes that German Christians pay. Thorsten Frei, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) told Die Welt daily that a mosque tax was “an important step” that would allow “Islam in Germany to emancipate itself from foreign states.” In Germany, church taxes are collected from practicing Catholics and Protestants in order to fund church activities. They are collected by the state and then transferred to religious authorities. In the absence of a similar tax,...

Hungary was a loser in the 20th century but it is determined to be a winner in the 21st, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a Christmas interview published in daily Magyar Idok on Monday. [snip] Commenting on recent opposition protests, he said politics is an area where battles can be under way even on a Christmas Eve and protests are part of everyday life in a democracy. However, this does not apply to violence, destruction and vandalism, he added. It is easy to assess the situation: the government stands for work, family and security and opposition policies stand for...

A driver accelerated into a group of pedestrians in Liverpool in the early hours of Christmas Eve, inflicting “major trauma” on one. Partial footage published by the Liverpool Echo appears to show a large SUV creep up to a junction and come to a full halt, before suddenly accelerating at top speed into a group of four young males as they cross the road. The local newspaper describes two being struck, with one being knocked off his feet and spun off to the side of the car’s path, while his other, less fortunate companion was thrown in front of the...

Controversial Muslim lobby group MEND, which has been accused of promoting extremism, has “exerted decisive intellectual influence” in Britain’s first Islamophobia report, according to a think tank research note. Sir John Jenkins, the former British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, made the conclusions in a research paper for Policy Exchange after analysing the All-Party Parliamentary Group’s (APPG) report Islamophobia Defined: The Inquiry into a Working Definition of Islamophobia, which calls for the Government to establish a working definition of Islamophobia as “rooted in racism” and “a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.” Sir John found that...

The Taoiseach has criticized social media companies such as Facebook, that do not think they are “accountable” for what is posted on their platforms. Asked about threats made against groups of people after a social media video of the recent Roscommon eviction, Mr. (Leo) Varadkar said online platforms are not held to the same standard as newspaper publishers. “As I am concerned, social media posts like that are incitement of hatred and incitement of violence, and if you were a publisher of a newspaper or a broadcaster, you wouldn’t be allowed to promote that kind of stuff and you would...

The European Union announced on Thursday it would commit a further €20 million ($23 million) to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in 2019, i24news reports. This will bring the EU’s contribution to €153 million, which is in line with how much the US contributed to the UN agency for “Palestinian refugees” in 2017. The United States, the largest single contributor to UNRWA, announced in August that it would end its $350 million a year funding for the agency, describing the organization as an “irredeemably flawed operation”. That announcement followed a previous US announcement in January that it...

CATHOLIC schools will have to teach children about gay, lesbian and transgender relationships – even though it is against their ethos – under plans for the overhaul of sex education. A draft report from the Oireachtas Education Committee, which has been seen by the Irish Independent ,is calling for radical changes in how sex education is taught to children in both primary and secondary schools. Under the new plans, school children would be educated about gay, lesbian and transgender relationships “without distinction as to their heterosexual counterparts”. We expect the Turkish authorities therefore to refrain from any unilateral action likely to undermine the efforts of the Counter-Daesh Coalition or to risk further instability in...
