  • Rick Perry’s Woes Continue as Iowa Staff Is Cut to One Person

Former Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign continues to retrench. The Republican from Texas has whittled his staff in Iowa to one paid operative amid continuing fund-raising struggles, a spokeswoman for Mr. Perry confirmed. Mr. Perry led in the polls for a stretch during his first presidential bid four years ago. He spent significant time boning up on foreign policy and getting himself in physical shape for the grinds of the campaign trail. However, he has failed to generate excitement among voters in a crowded and more competitive Republican field. A Monmouth University poll on Monday showed Mr. Perry with support of...

A fax attributed to Vester Lee Flanagan claims the slayings were a response to the Charleston mass shooting. An apparent suicide note received by ABC News on Wednesday morning and attributed to Virginia shooting suspect Flanagan, aka Bryce Williams, claims the killing of two reporters during an on-air interview was motivated by the Charleston church shooting and a desire to incite a “race war.” ABC News says a man identifying himself as both Flanagan and Williams — Flanagan's on-air name — first contacted it several weeks ago. The man asked for a fax number, claiming he wanted to pitch the...

Donald Trump on Saturday sought to give Jeb Bush a black eye over a black hand. Trump wailed on the former Florida governor for a Photoshopped picture in a campaign leaflet sent out by a pro-Bush super PAC that shows him with a black left hand, and his body apparently super-imposed on a picture of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Jeb Bush has a Photoshopped photo for an ad which gives him a black left hand and much different looking body. Sad Little !Jeb Plane: Bush Super Pac Attempts To Troll Trump, Gives Former Governor A Black Man’s Hand In Mailer. A Super PAC backing former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for president with more than $100 million is officially embarrassing itself. Just one day after the Bush Super PAC Right to Rise USA flew a tiny plane with a banner attached to the end of it over 2016 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’s Mobile, Alabama rally, the geniuses backing yet another Bush for president appear to have photoshopped a black man’s hand onto the former Florida governor. -snip- “Moments before Trump was...

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum isn't just the latest 2016 Republican presidential candidate to call for ending birthright citizenship, joining Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. Scott Walker -- he wants credit for being the first to push overall immigration reform. "I am not new to this debate," Santorum said, noting that he had authored border security legislation almost a decade ago when he was in the Senate. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Three years after California voters passed a ballot measure to raise taxes on corporations and generate clean energy jobs by funding energy-efficiency projects in schools, barely one-tenth of the promised jobs have been created, and the state has no comprehensive list to show how much work has been done or how much energy has been saved. Money is trickling in at a slower-than-anticipated rate, and more than half of the $297 million given to schools so far has gone to consultants and energy auditors. The board created to oversee the project and submit annual progress reports...

Shortly after midnight, he was forecasting 272 seats for Conservatives and 271 for Labour. But when the sun rose in London on Friday, Conservatives had an expected 329 seats, against Labour's 233. The fault, Silver claimed, was with the polling: "It’s becoming increasingly clear that pre-election polls underestimated how well Conservatives would do and overestimated Labour’s result," the statistician guru wrote in the wee hours of the morning. Before the panicked phone calls and the embarrassing state audit, Ganesh Kumar knew the BrEZe computer program would flop. For seven years, Kumar has worked at the Board of Registered Nursing’s call center where he uses computer data to answer questions when nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing school graduates want to know the status of their license applications or renewals. So Kumar was all for it when Department of Consumer Affairs officials six years ago announced a new $28 million, off-the-shelf computer program, BrEZe, would replace obsolete, narrow systems used by the board and most of the other 39 regulatory...

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says that single-payer healthcare did not fail in Vermont and could be revived, amid speculation that flailing efforts in that regard could hurt his 2016 presidential hopes. Sanders, a self-described socialist, has been a champion of nationwide government-provided health insurance for everyone, known as single-payer healthcare. But a plan to enact just such a system in Sanders’s home state of Vermont suffered a major setback in December when Gov. Peter Shumlin (D), who had been a champion of the effort, dropped the proposal, concluding it was not financially feasible. Sanders told The Hill in a brief...

Today is the 206th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, a day now celebrated by some as Darwin Day. Darwin, of course, is best known for his theory of evolution through natural selection. When Darwin's work was first made public in 1859, it shocked Britain's religious establishment. And while today it is accepted by virtually all scientists, evolutionary theory is still rejected by many Americans, often because it conflicts with their religious beliefs about divine creation.

When Islamic extremists snatched more than 270 girls from the Chibok boarding school in Nigeria in the dead of night, protests broke out worldwide. The U.S. pledged to help find them, and the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag was born. Some 10 months later, most are still missing. The Boko Haram extremist group sees the mass kidnapping as a shining symbol of success, and has abducted hundreds of other girls, boys and women. The militants brag to their new captives about the surrender of the Chibok girls, their conversion to Islam and their marriage to fighters. "They told me the Chibok girls have...
