While officially the investigation into last year’s Monument Fire is “closed-unsolved,” there is no doubt it was human-caused. What is not known is whether it was accidentally started, or was lit as a diversion for criminal activities involving drug or people smuggling, Coronado National Forest spokeswoman Heidi Schewel said. “We know it was human-caused, there was no lightning in the area,” Schewel said during a telephone interview with the Herald/Review Monday. Monday she sent out a press release which highlighted investigations of the Monument and Horseshoe 2 fires in Cochise County done by forest service wildland fire investigators. Investigation of...

Back in mid-June came The Big Announcement: The Dallas Police & Fire Pension System was ponying up the $200 million needed to build the long-stalled-out Museum Tower high-rise in the Arts District. That same day, you may recall, we revisited a blast from the past -- the system's $27-mil investment in Arizona, which, as of last summer, was worth close to nada. Then, just last month, the Dallas Police & Fire Pension System's name came up yet again -- this time, as an investor in Jack Matthews and NYLO's boutique hotel in the Cedars, next to the South Side. The obvious resulted, with a standard issue kitchen grease fire. She panicked, couldn't contain it, and called me yelling: "Bring a fire extinguisher! Ever.B)Have a fire extinguisher, and know where it is.C) Don't wait to call 911. Those fire guys are...

It just never ends. First, National Public Radio had a feature this morning on the race riots in Tulsa around 1921. The people involved in that incident were completely wrong and everyone knows it. No further discussion needed. However, why bring this up in the middle of severe racial tension in the nation? Is NPR trying to bring about a peaceful, with-justice resolution to the national wound? No way. It's all about politics and race now, values have nothing to do with it. So I tried answers.com and all those other reasonable places and still can't answer. I figure there are enough smart people on FR to improve my chances. Question: When a fire starts, why does it flare up with a sudden burst of energy that is more intense than the subsequent flames? What's going on there? Why does it not kindle gradually, appear first feeble and then grow to its regular intensity?
