  • (From April 26, 2016) Most Americans disagree with Hillary Clinton on suing gun manufacturers

Hillary Clinton has made gun-manufacturer liability a centerpiece of her campaign, frequently attacking rival Vermont Sen. Bernard Sanders for not supporting the measure. In Connecticut, the site of one of the worst shootings in American history, she used gun control as a main rallying cry for her candidacy. Mrs. Clinton has called Mr. Sanders’ stance on the liability issue “unimaginable,” pointing out it’s one of the largest contrasts between them.

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) -- The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a measure that would ban the city employee retirement system from investing in companies that participate in firearm and ammunition manufacturing. The resolution by the supervisors could have a ripple effect throughout the country as the debate about gun control grows in the wake of a mass shooting in Orlando two weeks ago at a gay nightclub that left 50 people dead and several others injured. San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is trying to gather support nationwide by asking the mayors of both Boston and New York...

The makers of a new Katie Couric documentary on gun violence deceptively edited an interview between Couric and a group of gun rights activists in an apparent attempt to embarrass the activists, an audio recording of the full interview shows. At the 21:48 mark of Under the Gun a scene of Katie Couric interviewing members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, a gun rights organization, is shown. Couric can be heard in the interview asking activists from the group, “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?” The...

I didn't have any other thought in my head," says Moles. "I just knew I had to stop him." Moles, 80, was home with her husband, John, and their adult son Thursday night when she says she heard a commotion. She walked into the kitchen and found her husband bleeding on the floor. John, a retired Boeing worker, had been attacked with a knife and beaten with a crowbar, authorities said. He said three words...

The Richmond Police Department is trying an innovative approach to reduce violent crime.  Because the policy targets people who are not allowed to own guns, it might have positive effects.  David Kennedy has shown that most murders are committed by a very small group of violent individuals, usually associated with gangs and/or drug trafficking.  Identifying and focusing on those individuals has been shown to drastically reduce the murder rate.  One of the methods used to do this is to encourage people to turn in violent felons who illegally possess firearms.  Richmond Virginia has decided to run with this idea....

The National Rifle Association, the country's most influential gun-rights supporter, is challenging President Obama's new plan to use his presidential power to tighten firearms laws, calling it a "political stunt" that fails to increase public safety. President Obama said this weekend that he'll meet Monday with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss his "options” toward curbing gun violence, after ordering his White House team several months ago to identify "new actions" that he can take. The president also said that he's taking action because Congress has failed to act. He is expected to use so-called executive orders to tighten federal...

Colonial Firearm Regulation Clayton E. Cramer Recently published scholarship concerning the regulation of firearms in Colonial America claims that because Colonial governments distrusted the free population with guns, the laws required guns to be stored centrally, and were not generally allowed in private hands. According to this view, even those guns allowed in private hands were always considered the property of the government. This Article examines the laws of the American colonies and demonstrates that at least for the free population, gun control laws were neither laissez-faire nor restrictive. If Colonial governments evinced any distrust of the free population concerning...

Congressional Democrats are trying to build support for an effort to bar gun purchases by terror suspects, hoping to take advantage of the same public anxieties about security that gave Republicans a ringing House victory. The Democratic push seems likely to fall victim to opposition from the National Rifle Association and congressional gun-rights backers, chiefly Republicans, who have smothered firearms curbs for years. If the Republicans who control Congress block votes on the proposal, Democrats hope to profit politically by winning sympathy from angry voters. ...

As promised, President Obama is using executive actions to impose gun control on the nation, targeting the top-selling rifle in the country, the AR-15 style semi-automatic, with a ban on one of the most-used AR bullets by sportsmen and target shooters. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives this month revealed that it is proposing to put the ban on 5.56mm ammo on a fast track, immediately driving up the price of the bullets and prompting retailers, including the huge outdoors company Cabela’s, to urge sportsmen to urge Congress to stop the president.

This makes it difficult for citizens and lawyers to determine what is legal and what is not. If gun-control advocates and our media want to have a conversation about government restrictions on gun ownership, I think that’s fine. Debating more issues, rather than fewer, is probably good for our politics. But the conversation about guns needs to be a bit more factually precise. Today’s New York Times story on the AR-15 has a lot of good information and aims to be balanced, but the story still manages to perpetuate many of the most stubborn myths about rifles. Some points I would like to make in response:

Reflections on the Colorado movie massacre... It has oft been said, by armchair philosophers and professional politicians alike, that “hard cases make bad law”… meaning that one is better off depending on the other old saw, “it’s the exception that proves the rule.” There are few examples that prove this so clearly as the aftermath of an American massacre. We haven’t had many. For a nation of 300 million free people of every background, age and circumstance, we have relatively few problems. Compared with other civilizations in history, even other good ones, it should be awe-inspiring, how many Americans live...

Using the lure of $100 gift cards, the Chicago Police Department is encouraging people to get guns out of their homes and turn them in this Saturday, during the annual gun turn-in program. As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, the Police Department is partnering with 20 churches.. First Deputy Supt. Alfonza Wysinger says anyone who turns in a real gun will get a $100 gift card. Replicas and BB guns are worth $10. “No questions asked,” Wysinger said. “Just show up at the church, and hand over the weapons to the CPD officer that will be there, and get your...

Pilots packing heat may soon be a relic of the 9/11 aftermath, as the White House seeks to cut the $25 million budget in half for the federal flight deck officers training program known as the FFDO. “The Obama administration has had an institutional hostility towards the concept of arming pilots, and especially the FFDO program, since the beginning,” Lt. Col. Al Aitken, a retired Marine and now with the Airline Security Consulting Group, claimed at a panel hosted by the conservative Heritage Foundation on Friday. The panel brought together advocates for the voluntary program that trains pilots, co-pilots and...

Note: I originally wrote this last year. I'm posting it from my personal archives, because today is the anniversary of Kitty's death. Light a candle and remember her. Allow me, if I may, to discuss some serious things for a moment. We’ll start with history. Kitty Genovese. That’s a name some of you may have never even heard before. She was a bar manager in Queens, NY in 1964. On her way home, Winston Moseley attacked her and stabbed her twice in the back. After she stumbled and fell, he continued to stab her, repeatedly. She tried to defend herself....

Patrons at a Cheyenne Starbucks got more than a shot of espresso Monday morning, when a gun inside a girl’s purse fired inadvertently. Though several people were reported to being inside the coffee shop at the time, there were no injuries. The single bullet, which fired around 7 a.m. Monday morning, reportedly went through a chair and into a wall, narrowly avoiding many customers. Police officers were at the Starbucks at the time and say the girl, who is under 18 and has not been identified, was cited for possession of a firearm by a juvenile which carries a $750...

I am taking my CCW class on 12/17 and am excited about finally making it happen. I’ve been doing so much research (on-line initially) on pistols and really don’t want to jump the gun (no pun intended) and go out and purchase something inappropriate. I will want to own two pistols initially. One for home defense and the other for concealed carry. My question: Striker fired vs double/single action with a good old fashioned hammer. Both have pros and cons, but from what I have read it just boils down to a matter of personal preference. There are tons of...
  • I bought my first gun

I finally broke down and purchased my first gun for home protection. It's the Mossberg 500 12 gauge. It has a short barrel and is great for in the home use. It even comes with a pistol grip but I wont attach that unless it everything goes all "beyond thunderdome" on us. Going to take my wife out and make sure she knows how to handle it. I felt a shotgun was better and safer for an in home protection mechanism in our case. Heck, just the pump-action noise is enough to send someone packing. Anyway, in for a penny...

I love guns. I love guns so much that I can't seem to stop buying them. I love shooting them. I love cleaning them. I love kitting them out. I love buying pretty ammo for them. I love guns. My love of shooting is just one reason of the minor reasons I joined the Army in 1994. It's funny because whenever we have a range coming up for those that need to qualify on their assigned weapons, a lot of Soldiers complain about having to go. Heck, we only have to qualify once a year for criminy sakes. But, not...
