Sunday, June 14, 2009. New Richmond, Ohio was the sight of the Flag Day Rally for Freedom, and gray sky and a late monsoon like downpour could not damper the spirit of about 500 people of like mind. Although I arrived late, along with muggs, I heard rousing, inspirational, informative speeches by Mike Wilson, organizer of Cincinnati Tea Party, and Tom Tabback, author of THINGS FORGOTTEN, and JOE THE PLUMBER. Cincinnati 912 Project was also represented. www.Cincinnati912Project.com. Photos coming

Post Chaplain Wayne Rudell began the ceremony in honor of Flag Day with a prayer, “ ... Most gracious Lord, you have given to us the symbol of the flag to represent the United States in every nation when it is flown ... This flag has flown in every war and our flag is still flying in the middle of battles as a symbol of freedom for all who see it. Today it is time to retire the service of these flags and give them honor for their duty. We do this by burning each flag to put it in...

Today is June 14 - Flag Day! Flags are an object of national attention; the Bible also pays great attention to them: Prepare the way for the people; lift up a flag for the nations. ISAIAH 62:10 He lifts up a flag for the distant nations; He whistles for those at the ends of the earth, and here they come, swiftly and speedily! ISAIAH 5:26 His banner over me is love. Evolution of the United States Flag Until the Executive Order of June 24, 1912, neither the order of the stars nor the proportions of the flag was prescribed. Consequently, flags dating before this period sometimes show unusual arrangements of the stars and odd proportions, these features being left to the discretion of the flag maker. In general, however, straight rows of stars and proportions similar to those later adopted officially were used. The principal acts affecting the flag of the United States are the following: On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation,...

Remember when I led the parade? Hats came off and hands were placed over one's heart as I approached and passed by. Remember where I have been and what I stand for— ANZIO, NORMANDY, LEYTE, IWO JIMA, KOREA, VIETNAM, the ongoing war on terror, etc. The memorial honor rolls of those who did not come back are saluted when you salute me.

June 14th is Flag Day in the US. When Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner he posed a question. Most of us never think much about that question but events at the dawn of the 21st century beg that we revisit it. What is your answer? Video link

Christopher Gadsden's face and name may not be immortalized on any bill or coin, but this firebrand designed a symbol which, even through the swirling mists of time, is a reminder of the birth of the nation and the spirit that carried it to freedom. June 14 is Flag Day. On that day, of course, we remember the Stars and Stripes and the men who fought under that banner for freedom. Gadsden gave us another great flag, one that flew prominently during the American Revolution, under which many men fought and died. Gadsden's was the blazing yellow banner that sports...

JUNE 13, FLAG DAY AND US ARMY BIRTHDAY WEEKENDThe Friday evening, before Flag Day and the United States Army’s 233rd Birthday, saw our enthusiasm high with a continuous stream of honks and waves from passing cars. No rain ( a change from the recurring Friday night showers this past spring), but a very warm and pleasant night with cooling breezes near dusk, and good camaraderie among the twenty-three FReepers and visitors.. We carried plenty of flags and signs announcing the 233rd Birthday of the United States Army. The moonbats were restless as June approaches its full moon and a code...

Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation. With these words, on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress adopted the flag of the United States of America. Flag Day has since been partly eclipsed by other American traditions and holidays, and although it is still celebrated by numerous families and in many parts of the country, it has been forgotten by too many. I, however, will never forget Flag Day. On June 14, 2005, on...

This year, the days set aside for honoring fathers and flags fell on the same weekend. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 of every year. Father’s Day the third Sunday of June, fell on June 15 this year, as close as is possible to Flag Day. This close alignment of seemingly different days provides us with the opportunity to ponder the significance of remembering and honoring fathers and flags, and to contemplate the intersection of the symbol of our nation (the flag) with the person who, without which, we would not be here today (our father). While the 13-star...

Since 1969, a U.S. flag has been flying high on a tall pole in front of the Mitchell family home in Brea. "It's been up there every day," says Jane Mitchell, 73. "Except for a week when a storm brought down the pole and we had to replace it." Flag Day is Saturday, but many Orange County residents choose to display their pride every day of the year by decorating their homes with a flag. Charles and Rosemary Kissel display up to 13 flags at a time at their Anaheim home. The couple has a collection of about 300 U.S....

Most U.S. school children grow up knowing the story of Betsy Ross, who may or may not have sewn the first American flag, based on a sketch given to her by George Washington. But what about Francis Hopkinson, Mary Pickersgill or Samuel Reid, all of whom played roles in the history of the flag? Or Bernard Cigrand, who may have been the first to celebrate the birthday of the flag and led the movement to make Flag Day, June 14, a national observance? In her lifetime, Ross herself never claimed to have sewn the first flag. Only in 1870 did...

Washington, DC — Just about everyone in America knows that Sunday, June 15, is Father's Day. The "Day for Dads" has been celebrated on the third Sunday of June since 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson decreed it to be so. Those who make and sell power tools and greeting cards have been grateful ever since. Somehow, it just isn't the same for June 14th — Flag Day — and by no coincidence, the U.S. Army's anniversary. Father's Day is traditionally memorialized with gifts, cards and calls for dear old dad. Flag Day is all but forgotten. But this year, with...

It may not be much of a deal to most Americans, but to we Philadelphians, Saturday is Flag Day. Betsy Ross was once a member of my church, Old St. George’s (America’s first and world’s oldest Methodist Church). Contrary to what the National Park Service contends, there is concrete proof she crafted the first American Flag. Philadelphians will gather for an observation in front of her home on Arch Street. Another tradition is the annual radio broadcast "I am Your Flag" by Bob Nelson, aired on KYW 1060 AM, Philadelphia’s All-News station. KYW NewsRadio and its anchors are an institution...

When Stanley Hauerwas, the Duke University professor dubbed by Time as "America's best theologian" ("A playful mind," March 17, 2007), gave a commencement speech at a Mennonite college a while back, he said he was glad that no American flag was in evidence, for "the power of the flag is, by necessity, violent." Hauerwas added, "Because there is no flag here, Goshen College is potentially a more truthful, and thus academically interesting, educational institution than those that serve such flags." Two questions for asking on June 14, Flag Day: Is a flagless institution likely to be more academically interesting than...

The Long Memory Brigade here at MRC remembered Flag Day with a few reminders we've published in our Notable Quotables newsletter. The Left can easily display their contempt for the American flag. For example, there's this dropping of unpatriotic nastiness from the days right after 9/11 in The Nation: "My daughter, who goes to Stuyvesant High School only blocks from the World Trade Center, thinks we should fly an American flag out our window. Definitely not, I say: The flag stands for jingoism and vengeance and war. She tells me I’m wrong – the flag means standing together and honoring the...

The History Of Flag Day The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'. On June...

It has become customary to refer to the period from Thanksgiving week through New Year’s Day as the "holiday season," and with good reason. Many major holidays, including Christmas and Hanukkah, are clustered in that six-week span. With the passage of time, the holiday season has expanded, with the first Christmas decorations sometimes appearing before Halloween, and the holiday shopping season becoming the lynchpin supporting much of the entire retail sector. I enjoy Christmas and Thanksgiving as much now as I ever did as a boy, and am certain our culture would be immeasurably impoverished without them. There is, however,...

Representative Akin and Senator Kyl are sponsoring the bills in their respective houses that would protect the...

(English-language translation) The activity to commemorate Flag Day [in Puerto Rico] stressed the importance that supporters of statehood place on the billions of dollars the island receives in federal funds. Scores of participants marched along Roosevelt Avenue towards the headquarters of the New Progressive Party (PNP) in Hato Rey, where they met other followers to total over 100 [attendees]. Although PNP Vice-Chairman Jorge Santini and House Speaker José Aponte were present at this proselytizing event, the absence of other leaders, including PNP Chairman Pedro Rosselló, was noticeable. "We discussed a budget that can be $9.2, 9.4, or 9.6 billion, but...

What a Flag Day it was! Some would ask, 'Lyman, aren't you and others over-reacting, about the display of just one more flag?' That's the question I had to ask--and answer. The answer: an emphatic No! Apathy, shrugging the shoulders, passivity, lethargy, failure to take a stand about symbolism, intangibles and principles...is a slippery slope. We're living in a world where there is constant pressure to be 'politically correct' so as not to offend with genuine appropriate American patriotism, here in these United States. We had about 30 patriots show up during work hours, with people driving from as far...

President Bush at his press conference today said, "... one message that I will continue to send to the enemy is ... don't bet on American politics forcing my hand, because it's not going to happen. I'm going to make decisions not based upon politics, but based upon what's best for the United States of America. ... But my voice, what you hear from me, no matter what these polls and all the business look like, is that it's worth it, it is necessary, and we will succeed." On the 57th anniversary of the founding of Flag Day in America,...

Here in the United States we celebrate national holidays that remind us of our country's beginnings and of those who fought and died to protect it. One day in particular, which is most underrated and probably the most important, is Flag Day. The flag of the United States of America is more than red, white and blue, with stars and stripes. The flag represents all that America stands for and what America is. When we look up at our flag hanging still, or blowing in the wind, we see more than a piece of cloth. We see everything that America...

O say can you see ... the multitudes of East Bay residents hoisting their broad stripes and bright stars today in tribute to that quintessential emblem of American patriotism. Today we celebrate the 229th birthday of the American flag and this nation's Flag Day. It was 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted the stars-and-stripes pattern for our national flag nearly a year after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Popular myth has always credited Betsy Ross as our first patriotic tailor, but historians have other theories. Nevertheless, as a banner of national spirit, the flag has been so evocative as...

Why the Pledge of Allegiance Matters--Speech by Tom McClintock There is a reason behind the movement to strike the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance--and from our national customs, and our currency, and our public ceremonies. It has very little to do with atheism. It has a great deal to do with authoritarianism. The philosophy of the American Founding is unique among the nations of the world because of a bedrock principle that was given expression with words in the Declaration of Independence that are old and familiar, and yet not often pondered these days. In the American...

WEST YARMOUTH - June 14 doesn't get the same attention as the Fourth of July, but for Thomas Kerr and his wife, Gayle, it is a day filled with meaning. June 14, or Flag Day, is the day the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes in 1777. ''It's special for our family because of the history of dedication and commitment that both my grandfather and father had to make sure the day was celebrated,'' Thomas Kerr, 61, said yesterday at his summer cottage on Grace Avenue. Kerr's grandfather, William T. Kerr, is considered by many to be the founder...
