Heads up Brevard County, Florida FReepers Here’s the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections latest information on the Candidates and Amendments appearing on the 2012 Ballot. There is a link to information on the candidates. There is also a link to the Collins Center claiming to be a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that provides an overview and explanation of the 11 proposed amendments to the State Constitution; pros and cons are also provided. I have no knowledge of this Collins Center other than that which I discovered via Google; maybe other FReepers have knowledge of its “non-partisanship”. Links below ...

It was buried among the legal ads in a local newspaper this week, nary two paragraphs long amid public notices from municipalities and legal name changes. It was a federal court announcement, but no ordinary one, from a treasure hunter announcing to "modern day pirates" that he was laying claim to a previously undiscovered Civil War-era shipwreck buried off the coast of Asbury Park — the maritime equivalent of a wedding officiant asking "if anyone has reason for these two not to be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace." The "groom" is Allan Gardner, a Florida diver who...

It's Florida, after all, so what would you expect? After a constant stream of Sunshine State visits by President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, after many millions spent on TV ads, and even after a Republican National Convention in Tampa, Obama and Romney are essentially tied in America's ultimate battleground state. A new Tampa Bay Times/Miami Herald/Bay News 9 poll finds 48 percent of likely Florida voters backing Obama, 47 percent supporting Romney, 1 percent with Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson and just 4 percent undecided.

TALLAHASSEE -- The Republican Party of Florida waded into a traditionally apolitical fight Friday, announcing it will oppose the retention of three state Supreme Court justices on the November ballot. In a statement released by its spokeswoman, the party said its executive board voted unanimously this week to oppose Justices R. Fred Lewis, Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince in November’s retention elections. The justices do not face opponents, but voters are asked every six years to vote yes or no on whether they should remain on the job. The party statement singled out a 2003 case by the court as...

TALLAHASSEE — Time after time since taking office, Gov. Rick Scott has boasted of rejecting billions of dollars from the federal government. Now, Washington has turned the tables, shutting down Scott's plea for financial aid in a move that almost instantly took on political tones. The Federal Emergency Management Agency refused Scott's request for a presidential declaration of disaster for damages caused by Tropical Storm Isaac, declining to provide $26.9 million in aid to hard-hit counties. Scott moved this week to appeal the decision, but not before the issue was cast in a political light, highlighting Florida's importance in the...

Support for President Barack Obama among Jews in the state of Florida is down 7 percent on 2008, according to an American Jewish Committee (AJC) poll released Thursday. A total of 69% of Florida Jews said they would vote for Obama in November’s presidential elections, down from 76% in 2008, the AJC noted. A 7% drop in the Jewish vote likely represents over 50,000 votes in a state that the Republicans won in 2000 by fewer than 600 votes. The 69% figure closely matches the results of a Gallup poll among Jewish voters nationwide from last weekend, which put support...

More and more school districts are holding union contract negotiations in full view of the public. That positive development allows taxpayers - those people footing the bill for the giveaways authorized by the board - to learn where their money goes and why. By witnessing the process they can form their own opinions, free of the media filter and union spin. The unions have never liked this idea, and apparently have found a way to get around it: Arrange to have union members and supporters take all the seats reserved for the public. That will leave John and Jane Doe...

The only so called evidence of Appellee Obama's birth within the United States has come in the form of an electronic version posted on the internet. (R.112) There is uncontroverted evidence, however, on the record, to show that this "birth certificate" has either been altered or is entirely fraudulent. (R.260-278) No physical, paper copy has ever been presented to firmly establish that Appellee Obama was indeed born within the United States. (R.112) Yet even if his purported "birth certificate" is to be believed, Appellee Obama was born to a mother who was a citizen of the United States, and a...

In a new presidential campaign television advertisement which starts airing today, September 20, in parts of southern Florida, there’s only one person on screen and that one man isn’t running for president of the United States. In fact, that one man is not even an American, although he is well-known to most people in the heavily-Jewish communities of Southern Florida – it’s Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Secure America Now is the organization behind the thirty second ad which shows Netanyahu talking about what many consider to be the over-arching foreign policy issue of our time – the potential nuclear...

Mitt Romney has seized on President Barack Obama's statement that he 'can't change Washington from the inside by telling him: 'He can only change it from outside? Well, we're going to give him a chance in November. He's going outside!' Speaking at a rally in Sarasota, Florida, Romney reacted swiftly to Obama's comment in a Univision television forum: 'The most important lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside.'

Secret Romney Videos May Violate Florida’s Privacy LawsPosted on September 19, 2012 at 6:53am by Jason Howerton A number of undercover videos showing GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney talking candidly at a private fundraiser have been making headlines this week. The event was held in the home of Marc Leder in Boca Raton, Fla. Florida is classified a two party consent state, meaning it is illegal to intercept or record a “wire, oral, or electronic communication” unless all parties express consent. Assuming that Romney did not consent to being recorded, which certainly doesn’t appear to be the case, it may...
